so lots (most) triangle scarfs are way too long. By the time I get the pointed end off the ground I've got a hug role around my waist. Currently I have a pretty gray stretchy lace shawl. Can I cut it from the top to make it more sized for me? Will it unravel horribly?

Wed, November 19, 2008 - 3:41 PMI'd run a piece of masking tape along the top edge, about 1/2" below where you want the top of the scarf to be (masking tape should holod the threads temporarily in place). Cut 1/2" above the masking tape all the way across the scarf. Then sew a length of bias tape along the top edge & voila! You've got a new, shorter scarf. -

Wed, November 19, 2008 - 10:53 PMZig Zag stitch along the edge before attaching the bias tape (or serger if you have it) so that the edge does not unravel in spite of the bias tape. I had one unravel right out from under the bias tape..... I've zig zagged ever since!

I have a bit of a problem with the longer scarves, too...my legs are about 30-31"...so I never get the longer ones...and I always have a problem with pants and skirts being too long...my life story.
That being said, I have cut scarves to make them shorter, in the past...and even did one that was lace...I did, however, have the benefit of a wonderful seamstress that fixed it for me...and she used the bias tape...a great idea!

Thu, November 20, 2008 - 4:05 PMFabric glue! I love the stuff. Run a bead of fabric glue along your cut line. Smear it flat into a ribbon with your finger. Let it dry. Cut right down the center line of the dried glue ribbon. Nothing will ravel!
Leave long tails at each end of the bias tape and use them to tie the scarf on. This way the stress is on the tough bias tape not the fragile lace.

Sat, November 22, 2008 - 1:49 AMmy legs are pretty long and I still run into triangle scarves that are too long... however, since god also didn't give me much in the hip department, for preference I'll tie the scarf at one hip and tuck the long end up from about halfway down, so I've got a shorter dangle at each hip. It is a different look, though. :)
