if you were going to sell some belly dance items homemade....
which would you use as your selling profile and why.
im a stay at home mommy and i really want to supplement more $ for the family but im also going to be in school so it seems the best way is an at home job.......and most stay at home jobs are bs and you jus tpay out tons of cash and dont make any

Re: etsy/ebay etc etc..which one
Fri, July 3, 2009 - 5:14 PMI chose Etsy because (a) they have WAY less hoops to jump through to set up a shop, (b) they have WAY less fees, (c) I like supporting the all-handmade mantra of Etsy & (d) I wasn't interested in the bidding thing on eBay - just wanted to set my price. eBay tends to come off very Walmart-esque in that sense to me (people always want things cheap cheap CHEAP - and handmade just isn't cheap).
However, Etsy doesn't have the traffic that Etsy does, so their is some promoting of your wares involved. But I don't mind - it's a decent trade-off, IMO.

Fri, July 3, 2009 - 5:25 PMPersonally i would use Etsy, because I feel it is a more professional storefront atmosphere, and I also agree with the above post.

Re: etsy/ebay etc etc..which one
Fri, July 3, 2009 - 8:14 PMI'd also go with Etsy; it has more of an artisanal feel, and comes off more polished and professional. The pages look better, while Ebay appears a bit cheesy and bargain-basement. -

Re: etsy/ebay etc etc..which one
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 9:37 AMSome things to consider before opening your shop:
* Your return policy - better you have it stated before it crops up (check out different sellers' Store Policies sections to get an idea)
* Your shipping costs (more than just the postage - boxes, gas to the post office, etc)
* How you're going to photograph your items -- I found re-doing my photos improved my sales a LOT
Also, there are artisans on Etsy who you can buy banners from (for the top of your store page), so if you're not so graphically inclined, pay someone who is! :) There are also a lot of forums & how-to on Etsy on everything from packaging your items to promoting your shop, so take advatange of them - afterall, they're free. And here are some tribes that might help you with questions before, during & after you've set up:

Sat, July 4, 2009 - 9:00 PMwhat did you do different with your photo?s i have a pretty decent camera so that helps . are most of yours just of the item or of the item in action so to say -

Re: etsy/ebay etc etc..which one
Sun, July 5, 2009 - 8:18 AMFor my clothes, I foudn it was better when photographed in-action & with a whole outfit, not just the one piece, cropped down to just the item. Also, taking photos outside in natural sunlight, instead of inside with the camera flash, helped a lot to make things look more true to real life.

Re: etsy/ebay etc etc..which one
Tue, July 7, 2009 - 6:46 AMI like etsy better because its up for 6 months and the fees are less.
But I do use ebay as well, usually when its something I'm not sure on the price (so I let the bidders bid it up) or if its something not handmade, which is an etsy stipulation (or supplies).
I just sold a bunch of my old scrapbooking supplies on ebay, but I also had to pay the dang fees too :/
I would really like to spice up my etsy shop, but I make such an odd mix of items that I wouldn't know what theme to go with. Anything from cowrie falls to christmas ornaments, lol! -

Re: etsy/ebay etc etc..which one
Sun, July 19, 2009 - 3:39 AMThis is really interesting guys - very useful!! I find Etsy to be very US based - as i've tried to buy from america before and they won't sell to overseas etc. I don't think all are this way though. (i'm in the UK).
I'm planning on setting up my own etsy store ( have done the skeleton part, just need to put stuff in there for sale) and don't konw if artwork sells there well - i'ma painter/illustrator. I also want to sell bespoke bellydance costumes, but havn't had time yet to make another one to show as an example. -
