I am constructing a bra for my troupe mate out of Xena Warrior Boobies cups. I'm hoping they don't take out a majority of the bra (I haven't seen them yet..) Anyways, I sketched like crazy last night and sketched up a matching belt but in order to tie the belt into the bra, I need matching pieces of metal. Do you guys know where you can get hammered pieces of metal? I've been through bead stores and stuff looking for suitable metal beads and have come up empty handed. I googled and came up with nothing.
Got any ideas?

You'd have to hammer them.

Wed, September 30, 2009 - 5:59 PMThanks for the suggestions. I didn't see anything there but Kit Kraft had some nice looking metal studs so maybe those could make some accents. Thats an idea.

Wed, September 30, 2009 - 7:07 AMhow big are you talking? bottle caps dont pound out very big, and are pretty time consuming to strip of their paint. ask me how i know LOL ive stripped and pounded dozens... -

Re: Metal Bits
Wed, September 30, 2009 - 7:43 AMWould you have to remove the paint? Would there be a reason why you couldn't use the underside facing out? -

Re: Metal Bits
Wed, September 30, 2009 - 5:53 PMI am imaging the Xena Warrior Boobies has a particular finish. Like silver and pewter had babies and they made boobie cups. Bottle caps are more gold-ish in color, right? I gotta pound me a bottle cap now. Sounds very theraputic.

Tue, October 13, 2009 - 5:46 PMyes, they require stripping, and its a noxious process...if you can manage to just scrape the rubber seal off the underside (twist-off and kind that need an opener have different seals), then i imagine you could just pound them out that way.

Re: Metal Bits
Wed, September 30, 2009 - 7:50 PMI think Xena's breast plate thingy was antiqued brass finish. You could go to thrift stores and look for an old brass serving tray or something similar. I see piles of things like that in the bric n' brac sections. You could probably cut through most with tin snips. If her cups end up silver, you could use hammer out aluminum cans/bottles or tin can tops. The aluminum bottles tend to be thicker aluminum.
Another option would be to just find anything the shape you want and just paint with metallic paint with an antique finish. I was able to get a pretty convincing aged copper look on a paper mache mask I made. It's on my blog (mieljolie.blogspot.com/2009/0....html). The pics don't do it justice. My camera oversaturates reds.
I really like using Rub n' Buff on poly clay and plastic items. It gives a pretty convincing look, too.
Good luck with it! Sounds like a really fun project. -

Thu, October 1, 2009 - 7:41 AMCool mask!
I want the pgmy puff or instructions to make my own.. LOL! haven't seen the new HP yet. I have numerous polyclay faces at home as well as lots of fun fur. I haven't touched my clay in a few years, last thing I did with clay was my sculpted mermaid. -

Totally OT Harry Potter ramblings
Sat, October 3, 2009 - 10:47 AMThanks, Melissa! You must go see the new movie! Not ANYTHING like the book, but still worth seeing at a theatre. The pygmy puff in the movie looks nothing like we imagined (though still cute). At least for the whole second it was seen. :)
Pygmy puffs are pretty easy to make. You could just make a pom pom and glue a poly face to it and a hair clippy to attach it to your shoulder. I got a little more elaborate by loom knitting the body to make it hollow so he can hold things or sit on a pencil top. My email is in the profile section on my blog. If you want more directions on making a loom and a puff, just contact me.
Back on Topic of Metal Bits: One quick (probably obvious) note for you. After you obtain the finish you like, be sure to seal it with something like clear acrylic spray paint, so it won't rust or change appearance.

Re: Metal Bits
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 7:41 PMI am not sure the size and shape of metal peices you want, but if you do want brass check out www.fancifulsinc.com/
I have used some of the brass findings on costumes I have designed over the years. They have a bunch of cool stuff, most with a loop or some other manner that it can be fastened.

Re: Metal Bits
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 8:05 PMHave you considered using Art Metal Foil Sheets? Example: www.dickblick.com/products/...il-sheets/
You can get the hammered look by quite literally hammering them, they can be cut to any shape with tin snips (don't forget to sand the edges), and you can make holes for sewing purposes with a nail and a block of wood (also sand).

Re: Metal Bits
Tue, October 13, 2009 - 7:50 AMI've been considering trying to make partial metal breast plates for a dance bra, and a friend suggested going to Lowe's or Home Depot and looking at the hammered copper ceiling tiles. She said they have great designs already on them and they are light weight enough that it shouldn't be too hard to cut and work with. Might work for what you are trying to do..... Just a thought. -
