Re: *SIGH*
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 9:22 AMOh I'm so glad I could help... It's totally hot. I'm not a huge fan of showing arabians the way the are today (ducks) I'm a purest... But I LOOOOVE the fact that they do come with their own rich heritage and that allows those of us who own them to be able to dress them up.
I have a beautiful gold and black brocade for my gray... some kuchi would accent it nicely... yeah for more costuming! =) Please post pictures when you all do get something up I would love to see.. hmm beads and kuchi and horses... only thing better is all the same + dancing. =)

Re: *SIGH*
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 9:48 AMI don't want to rain on anyone's parade. I really don't, so don't shoot me. I was just going to point out that is a very Americanized way to do it.
Most decorations are . . . . .well they're our tasseled belts.

Yes I know the first one's a camel. So this idea is wonderful, don't get me wrong, it's just not authentically ME. -

Re: *SIGH*
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 10:00 AMI agree Octavia- however, I have also seen photographs of nomadic tribes using Kuchi as decoration on their mighty steeds- so I didn't bother to say anything as I'd seen it before.
Your links are great! I have also seen some beautiful ones on my favourite egyptian stores website - www.sphinxshop.com/bridle1.htm
I have plans to make a tassled one too...I just think the kuchi idea is cool!

Re: *SIGH*
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 10:44 AMYeah, that's one thing that has always cracked me up about Tribal Bellydance costuming, and how it appropriates so much stuff that was originally meant for a quite different use. I wonder how Middle Easterners feel when they see us prancing around in our camel tassels and bedroll covers! -

Re: *SIGH*
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 11:16 AMwell yeah, that's why it's "american" tribal style =p
of course it's all an american way to do it
all anyone's saying is that it's pretty =p

Re: *SIGH*
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 12:53 PMI actually had the pleasure of expirencing this exact thing. I was sitting next to an Egyptian friend of mine while watching a belly dance show. A tribal group came out wearing tassel belts. He turned to me, laughed, pointed and said, "This is for camels to wear!" and then shook his head smiling. I thought it was pretty funny and I think about it everytime I tie on a tassel belt. -

Wed, April 23, 2008 - 12:57 PMThat reminds me a thread I saw a while back on the Camel Beauty Pageant....

Re: *SIGH*
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 12:47 PMNope 110% agreement on that. Most of the stuff I made for my horse has found it's way on to my belt.. .in this case vis versa... the Arabs my friends and I breed are pure Asil.... Al-Khamsa... straight from the desert kind of arabs, so with that comes cool pictures of tassels and thing...
but of course in a show ring that stuff isn't as 'pretty' but they do use the yarn and shells and things and some pretties... but mostly for parade events or when somone is important... The saddle rump rug set in the second pictures are a tad more modern, but still more 'authentic' ... but they sit horribly on a horse, take years to sweat to the poper shape etc etc... but they are pretty and look good when the governor comes to the village or whatever. =)
the third picture looks like one very familar to me actually.
Anyway thank you for pointing it out.. I was more going oh- sparkly kuchi on a horse! =) which I dont' get to do very often.

Re: somet'ing different for kuchi
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 10:45 AMI'll admit, most -all of my delving into their culture is pre 1900. I was just trying to point out that they don't use only kuchi. You couldn't, because that doesn't flick off flies or absorb sweat or any of the other things harness sets are supposed to do. -

Re: somet'ing different for kuchi
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 1:57 PMThe Saluki dog fancy does something similar. Their Speciality shows often have a 'Native Costume' Class for owners and dogs.
I've seen plenty of Kuchi Chokers winding up as dog collars.
The Turkmen Horse people dress up their tack as well.
I have noticed there is a lot of similarity in Islamic metalwork and decoration. Many Asian tribal work looks very close to the more southern Arabic work.
