Good morning DIYers. Zina here asking for advice...

Garment: strech lace top that I wanted to crop. I took out the lining (it was ugly), cut down around the neckline and cropped the bottom. At the neckline I didn't want a raw edge. I also didn't want the neck to stretch any more so what to do??? I took thin bias tape and attached it to the neckline. It looks nice and finished but worked exactly the opposite of what I wanted. The neckline is now all stretched out so it gapes and is ruffly. What did I do wrong? I can take the bias tape off but how can I finish the neckline without stretching it all out?

Thank you much.

You could cut the bias tape slightly shorter than the finished neckline edge and then ease the edge into the bias tape. The only problem with that is that there will be no stretch to the neckline, something you may or may not want.

You can also find a stretchy seam binding, can't remember what it is called, not sold in the package like the seam bindings, it comes in a roll and as you stretch it, it rolls into itself. That would encase your edge, but I don't think it comes in a variety of colors - what I have is just white (or ivory as it ages...)

Did you stay-stitch the neckline before you added the bias tape? If not, the stretchy fabric combined with the nature stretch of bias tape has probably stretched the fabric out of shape along the neckline. To try to fix: pull the tape off, then try to restore the original shape of the neckline (e.g. careful steaming). Then, run a line of stitches about 1/4" in all along the inside edge of the neckline, being careful to not stretch the fabric. This will prevent the neckline from stretching out of shape while the bias is added. Then add the bias. Moral of the story: *always* stay-stitch along your necklines, even on woven fabric, before assembling.
