I am going to attempt to make chiffon armbands to match a skirt. I do not have a serger and I dont do a lot of sewing. so here is my question, from pictures I can figure out a pattern, but what is the best looking way to finish it without a serger. Im thinking a rolled edge but how do I do that on a regular sewing machine??? Or is there a better way??? Thanks

Re: Chiffon sleeves/armbands
Fri, October 31, 2008 - 4:48 PMon a regular sewing machine you do want to use a rolled hem. But what you do is fold a 1/4" of fabric over, and then do it again. This causes a tiny little hem with no raw edges showing.
Or if you want to add a bit of decoration find a bias tape that is single fold or double-fold in a color you want and fold it around the edge, sew it down.

Sat, November 1, 2008 - 8:50 AMyou can run the sew line from a regular machine set at a slightly loosened tension along the edge.. 1/2 on 1/2 off.. this finishes the end... the just pull threads to complete.

Re: Chiffon sleeves/armbands
Sat, November 1, 2008 - 10:49 AMi just made some, and what i did was use a tiny zig-zag stitch very close to the edge, on my regular home sewing machine. it pulls the edges into the stitch and looks nice. (i practiced on scraps to get exactly what i wanted first.) i wanted it to be very soft and floaty, and the serger and rolled edge were a bit heavier than i liked. anyway, just a suggestion -

Re: Chiffon sleeves/armbands
Fri, November 7, 2008 - 6:52 PMI like the look of the zig-zag stitch on a chiffon skirt - creates a nice *lettuce leaf* effect, especially if you stretch it a bit while sewing.

Re: Chiffon sleeves/armbands
Sun, November 2, 2008 - 6:04 AMI like to use French seams on sheer stuff... first, sew the tiniest seam possible, wrong sides of the fabric together. In other words, the seam allowance will be on the outside or wrong side of the garment. Now, turn it inside out, and resew the seam again, just large enough to encase the first seam inside itself. So the seam allowance is on the inside, where it belongs, but tucked inside itself so no raw edges show.
I'm also a huge fan of seam binding and bias tape. Especially with elastic casings.

Re: Chiffon sleeves/armbands
Fri, November 7, 2008 - 3:28 PMThere are rolled hem (aka lingerie hem) feet for sewing machines. My cheap Target machine even came with one. You make the first little 1/4" fold and fold again to get the roll started, and the foot guides the fabric to do the rest. It can be a little tricky, but it's fabulous when you finally get the hang of it. -
