For those of you with stage names:
When did you give yourself a name? Was it when you started dancing, performing or another time?
Why did you take the name you did?
I'm going to X-post this question to see what other tribes say too!
Thanks!

Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 4:00 PMI took a dance name when I started performing. I was Dea, and I used it because at the time I was very pagan, and that was my Craft name.
Nowadays, though, I just use my own name because I've long since outgrown my "Dea" identity. Amber suits me fine... as well it should, since I feel more myself when dancing than at any other time, pretty much!

Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 4:19 PMI like Amber's response. I too have been thinking about a bellydance name. SOmething to think about. -
-
Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 4:31 PMOh I've been thinking about this too, good timing!
I wont be using my real name I don't think, I don't really like my real name, which is why I never even use it for screen names. Speaking of which, I like my screen name, and have been using it for years in different circles, but well, it's Tolkien, not BellyDance lol so I don't know what I'll do...
I just want something that sounds nice..... but not too cheesy -

Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 4:44 PMHey, who cares that it's Tolkien? Nienna (assuming that's the name you're referring to) is a beautiful name, and no one says your name has to be directly related to bellydance! Hell, my former dance name was Latin, which isn't exactly bellydance related. One of the beauties around here just renamed herself Bellatrix which, among other things, is the name of a Harry Potter character. There are plenty of girls out there who either go by real names, alternate names that sound real, or have a stage name that isn't of a Middle Eastern theme.
Go with a name you LOVE, a name that screams YOU - that, I feel, is more appropriate than defaulting to something "traditional." :) -
-
Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 5:19 PMLove Tolkien! I think it should be who YOU feel you are, not necessarily BD related unless your in a troupe that asks it of you. Then have two names! LOL!
-
Re: Stage names?
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 1:17 PMI agree Amber. Especially in the fusion circles, I think it's completely acceptable to pick a name that you like, whether or not it's a "bellydance" name.
I just picked a name since I'll be having my first performance soon, and I spent forever trying to find a name related to my ethnic roots and just couldn't find anything that felt right.
Then late one night my boyfriend was making fun of me for being such a night owl, and said that I was vespertine. So, even if it's an adjective and not a name, I'm using it, because it fits ; ) -
-
Re: Stage names?
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 1:22 PMI think that Vespertine is a fantastic stage name! In a lot of cultures, names are adjectives anyway. That's really cool. :o) -

Re: Stage names?
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 3:53 PMThis thread has been such an inspiration for me!
After reading all the posts I don't know why I EVER worried about what people would think if I didn't choose a middle eastern or oriental name!
So thanks everyone, and hugs all around!

Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 5:26 PMWhen I first started dancing, like 10years ago I went by Naseem (I still really like that name) then I quit dancing for a few years and when I started up again I decided to go with Azra because I like the sound of it, I dont know if I look like an Azra though? I'm thinking I like Azra Naseem. hmmm. -
-
Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 5:42 PMoh I'm glad to see the positive response :)
(and haha, I'm replying to this on two tribes now lol)
As I just posted on the other tribe, Nienna has been with me for about 6 years now, and I do feel that it is a part of me, in fact one of my closest friends in the world refuses to acknowledge that it's NOT my real name lol When I visited her in Portugal she even introduced me as Nienna, and no one seemed to catch on, apparently they thought all Canadians had exotic names like that lol!
There is even a last name to go with it actually Nienna Tatharwen, but I might drop it because most people will just hear the 'arwen' in there and think 'movies!' (I originally chose it because together both names amount to the translation of 'weeping willow maiden' and I love willow trees).
So maybe I will just use Nienna after all! You guys are very encouraging :D -
-
Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 5:44 PMI second Azra Naseem! That sounds amazing, you should definitely use it! :D

Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 5:51 PMI choose mine when I first started dancing 6 years ago. There's a link that I can't remember now but it has different Arabic names on it. I chose Rya cause it means 'to dream' and I thought that was kind of neat.
Here's a site I just found trying to find the one I used. It's kind of neat www.ummah.net/family/fem.html
Ooh here's the one I used: www.bdancer.com/med-guide/...ames.html#R -

Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 6:20 PMHere's a good example: when a friend of mine started dancing, she just used the original of her name, which was once upon a blue moon a Hebrew name that got changed throughout the millennia.
Try finding the root of your name, or what different names have the same base. You'll get some interesting answers.

Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 6:45 PMPhenoix McFarland has a great book about names, their use and their influence on one's sye-kie (i have no idea how to spell that... hurray for phonetics!) "he who is called a bear is apt to act like a bear"
it's a Pagan geared group, but there is a lot of cool information on nomancleature(sp?), naming/coming of age ceremonies, for anyone. the 2nd half-ish of the book is all names, Gods/Goddesses(a little arrogant, I think....) flowers, different cultures, stones, and a bunch of other sources. ^_^

Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 6:45 PMI just chose mine a couple months ago, and I've been dancing for about 4 years now.
I gave it a lot of thought for a long time, but finally, what sparked it was dancing at an event where they introduced all the dancers: Naima, Zahira, Vashtiya, etc... and "Laurie W*****" Yikes. It just sounded so lame. So, now, dance-wise, I'm Aliyah.

Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 6:47 PMBoth the SCA troupe and the studio dancers all had names. Many have kept them for years. It was hard picking a name that fit. There were many suggestions and Kadife stuck. It means velvet. And that's me, rich, vibrant, exquisit (sp?), touchable, sensual, but rub me the wrong way and I get rough. LOL -

Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 7:06 PMUgh, the name dilema. I've been vacillating between stage name/nickname and my real name. I really like Maya Kali as a name. I feel Maya fits me well however I feel strange introducing myself to new students as Maya when my friends who happen to be in my troupe know me as carrie. I am a dancer and sometimes having a fake name seems a bit presumptuous or cheesy lol. Especially when I go to a Moroccan restaurant in town and see a caucasian dancer with an exotic name that you just KNOW isn't her real name. There's a part of me who wants to be Maya and what it entails...mystery, illusion, enchantment, but then there's the practical me who wants people to know the real me. That CARRIE is me and happens to also be a dancer. I dont want to separate myself from the dancer part of me. But I'm drawn to the name Maya. So I go through phases where online I'm maya and other times I'm carrie.
So back to your questions....when I used Maya was when I started performing in the cabaret circles. I took the name because of what it meant in Hinduism. I'm drawn to the concept of Maya and how Kali is Maya and yet she helps you see through that very veil.
I like the name. It "looks" like me yet simple to pronounce and not that all unusual. So it seems more like a real name. However Maya Newton doesn't quite cut it. I like Kali...and so thought to name myself after her.

Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 7:13 PMTo repeat what I posted on this topic elsewhere, I picked my name for my first group performance. I chose "bhasat" because it means "a bird," and birding is one of my other obsessions. But yesterday I just found out that it means a specific bird, a vulture, and I'm not so keep on that, so I'm currently having the dilemma of whether to change it or not. I agree that it can feel a little silly to see an obviously white-bread American dancer with an exotic name, but like some of you, I don't think "Megan" makes a particularly convincing name for a bellydancer. I don't know whether I'm going to keep Bhasat or not. I'm by no means an established dancer and I'm about to move out of state, so it's not like the name is going to stick at all if I don't force it to. Decisions, decisions.... -
-
Re: Stage names?
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 6:20 AMI understand your hesitation on using Bhasat, but just to give you something to think about. Vultures are wonderful creatures. They're social, and they are environmentally valuable. Sure they eat dead things, but so do we...just not roadkill lol. Rarely do they ever kill their food and so they are gentle creatures. I work in the wildlife industry and have had the experience to work with vultures. They can be extremely sweet. I worked with a injured black vulture who would follow you around the exhibit while you worked just to see what you were doing. She was so sweet....I miss her. Also in Ancient Egypt, vultures were highly viewed. Some of the goddesses were depicted wearing a vulture headdress.
Personally as you can probably guess already, I like Bhasat and think you should keep it! -
-
Re: Stage names?
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 2:24 PMCarrie, thanks for the input! I totally agree about vultures being wonderful. I volunteer at a birds of prey rehabilitation center, and one of my very favorite birds is our black vulture Jeff, who is totally sweet and almost like a puppy in her personality. (Yes, her. They thought Jeff was a boy for 12 years and then one day she laid 2 eggs, to everyone's complete surprise.) I thought about how they were sacred in Egypt too. Maybe I'll keep it. I haven't decided yet, but you're convincing me. :-) -

Re: Stage names?
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 2:59 PMNekhbet is the name of the vulture Goddess in ancient Egypt. She was the symbol and patron of Upper Egypt, and she was a protection Goddess. Along with Wadjet, the snake, she was worn on the forehead of the Pharaohs for protection! She was part of the every day religion of the Egyptians as a very ancient and important Goddess. The vulture was also identified with the Goddess Mut, who was the wife of Amun.
You could also you a pretty hieroglyph to write your name for posters, buisness cards, website, etc... -
-
Re: Stage names?
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 4:51 PMI hadn't thought of the hieroglyph idea. Thanks so much!! And I do like Egyptian costumes best of all....I guess I should just keep it! :-)

Tue, April 8, 2008 - 5:52 PMi volunteer at a dog rescue when i have a weekend or 2, and i was giving a new dog a bath. VERY big, VERY hairy dog (we think a belgian sheep dog) and they had named the dog Natasha when they found him. i was washing the poo off him for the open house (diarreah and ungroomed sheep dog makes stinky) and as his hair was flattening in the water, noticed that Natasha was, not just a boy, but wasn't even neutered! his name is now Kuma- Japanese for bear ^_^

Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 7:39 PMI gave myself a dance name for our student troupe's first performance. I picked it from a list I found when I searched on belly dance names. My dance name, Shazadi, means princess. I don't feel much like a princess in real life, that's why I chose it. I personally think it's okay when an obviously Caucasian dancer has an exotic name. It's all part of the persona we take on when we dance, along with the costuming, makeup, hair, etc. I don't think it's cheesy at all. I like the symbolism, too.
Of course, I'm not a professional, I'm a student, and this is my hobby, so maybe professionals feel differently about it? There was another thread about this in the Everyday Bellydancer, and I thought some professional dancers said one of the reasons they have a stage/dance name is for safety, not using their real name when performing.

Re: Stage names?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 11:08 PMOh Yipe! I am glad you posted this topic because I literally was just thinking about this last night and was going to post the same question. LOL So THANK YOU! Well, I am very new to bellydance. I am a student and not a professional bellydancer yet anyway. I have a ways to go. But I like the idea of having a specific name for bellydance that means something special to you or describes you. But I wasn't sure if it was too cocky or too fast of me to pick a name. Afterall, I am a student for only 2 months or so and I am not performing yet. What do you ladies think about that? I guess I don't want to disrespect the instructors or other professional dancers at my school who have many years invested into this art. You know what I mean? Anyway... My real name is Diana. But I do love Arabic names. I also like Biblical names which may be the way I head if I chose a name. I am not sure how comfortable I would feel picking a pagan name or hindu god name etc... (this stems from my faith as a Christian) but I am sure my comment made that pretty obvious. LOL Anyway... I am going to check out some names online and I will post some that I like. -

Re: Stage names?
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 5:09 AMI don't think it's too soon for you to pick a name. It's such a personal thing, it could take you a while to find one that suits you. Just as well to start looking.
-
Re: Stage names?
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 7:36 AMI too have been in it for only 2 months! I'm loving it and feel like I have not enough time to get where I want to be. Time to lock the kids away! LOL!
I didn't want to be presumptuous either when picking a name. When and what. I certainly believe it has to be important to you and you have to feel it when you are dancing.
-
Re: Stage names?
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 4:55 PMI don't think it's too early to pick a stage name. If you don't want a diety name, one thing you might think about is figure out something you really love, and then look for Arabic/Hebrew/Farsi/Pali/Sanskrit/(name Middle Eastern language)-English dictionaries online that are searchable, and go through and find words that mean whatever it is that you love, and then choose that. -
-
Re: Stage names?
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 5:58 PMstage names- or communion names, craft names, etc- can be tools for transformation. you can pick a name that means something graceful if thats what you want to be, or a name having to do with disapline(sp?) if you have having trouble getting your self to practice. (just a tool for your mind though. we still need to practice ^_~) -

Re: Stage names?
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 1:12 PMPicking a name can seem intimidating - but you don't HAVE to keep it!! Pick one you like and try it on for awhile. If it isn't right for you, pick something else. I've been through, oh, several names now. And the one I'm currently using is just variaitons on my given name.

Re: Stage names?
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 8:01 AMMy stage name sort of migrated over from the SCA as well. I had been dancing for about three or four years and decided that I wanted to use a stage name. Here is what I said about my name when a similar question was posed in the Belly Dance for Life Tribe:
since I took this name it's become *my* name, meaning that I feel like Shamsa and will answer to that in a crowd more readily than to my "mundane" name. I know a lot of dancers who can say the same thing.
I found the name when I was researching Arabic poetry, mostly poems about dancers. I ran across a female poet from the 13th century. Her full name was Shamsa al Mawsiyya. I really loved what I could find of her writing. Now, years later and with the help of google I've been able to find a bit more. Like:
"She sways in a saffron dress bathed in camphor, ambergris and sandalwood like a narcissus in the garden, a rose in the sun or an image in the temple."
Pretty neat huh?
And then I found out that Shamsa literally means "sun" and since I've always had the blazing red hair it seemed to fit. Also, a Shamsa in Arabic art is a sunburst or a rosette like this: www.columbia.edu/itc/meala...nburst.jpg
I've also found out that the word "shamsia" means umbrella. So...if I make my name Shamsa Shamsia it will literally mean "sun umbrella" and I'll be a parasol. Har har. But I am seriousluy thinking using that. Shamsa Shamsia has a nice ring to it.
