Beading a stretch mesh tummy cover....

I've been thinking about a little project. I might have posted a picture of this within the last year, but I don't recall where I posted it. If I can find it, I'll post a link.

I remember seeing a costume for sale... it was a lovely turquoise blue bedleh worn with a black skirt. The owner of the costume paired this ensemble with what appeared to be a black mesh tummy cover that had some matching blue sequinned appliques on it. It made a bedleh/skirt combination look more like an Egyptian dress! I really like the idea as on rare occasion, I have been offered gigs where I need to be more "covered up" in the midriff area, which isn't what I do (so I had to decline). So rather than spending $600 on a dress, I thought it would be a cool idea to just buy one or two of these midriff covers and embellish them a little to match a couple of my bedlehs.

I was just wondering about sewing beads/beaded appliques on stretch mesh. How do you do this and accommodate for the stretch in the fabric? I know if you don't allow for the stretch, the fabric will at least pucker, or worse, run/tear! Let's assume I'll use an applique... how would you go about sewing on an applique to a stretch mesh midriff cover?

(PS) I'm planning on ordering them from DesignsbyJanie (of Wiggles of the West fame!).

What I do is put the stretchy garment on, then pin (or have someone else pin) the applique or decoration in place. Use safety pins, they'll stay in place better.

Then, I take it off, and stitch it on by hand, stretching the fabric beneath as I go. Some people stretch the fabric out on an embroidery hoop.

Hmmm..... I like the embroidery hoop idea (less of a chance of me drawing blood...LOL!). Is it possible to OVER-stretch the fabric while stitching on an applique?

        Helen,

That's exactly what I thought (and why I posted the photo in the first place). Those Egyptian dresses are GORGEOUS, but incredibly pricey! I'd like to make an alternative that provides the mid-section coverage but doesn't lose it's bedleh appeal. When I saw that photo, I thought BRILLIANT IDEA!!

Yes ma'am, it is possible to over-stretch the fabric while sewing on the applique. My entire household thinks I'm crazy because I sometimes sew stuff while I'm wearing it! Another option that works on some things, but not others, is to trace the outline of the applique onto the garment while you are wearing it, then stitch the drawn outline to the edges of the applique. You have to start on opposite sides (four points, mimimum) and work your way around. Good luck!

This is actally the best way. And you aren't the only one who has done this. An alternative is sew it while on a dress form ... a little easier.

            Ah! Janie appears!

I don't have a dress form so I will probably do the trace-the-outline method.

I knew you all were creative would be able to help me figure this out! Thanks so much for all the great ideas!

              Sasha..
first, as soon as you started describing the 'dress' I knew which you were talking of... it is a great idea....

You can make a dress form our of an old T shirt and bunting.. there is a great tutorial on YouTube.. just search 'making a dress form'

I goes something like.. put on the t shirt, have a friend take duct tape and go all around your body and then using masking to make the clevage. Then cut straight up each side to take off. The tape the cuts closed. Stuff with the bunting until VERY full. Then cover opennings. Then take a soft fabric like a stretch velvet or penne . Now you have a form that is YOUR body.. put on the stretch garment and sew away.. [careful not to sew you appliques to your form] ..

I like the 'trace an outline' idea... that is good.
