Hello all. 3-4 years ago I went to a high school football game where the entire drill team was wearing crop tops they made from t-shirts. The thing about these were the sides had somehow been cut into strips all the way down to the bottom then tied to make them snug fitting. Does anyone know what the heck I'm talking about and how to make the cuts? They were really cute, especially seeing the whole squad wearing them.

Thank you in advance.

oh yeah! :) have you seen those blankets that are made the same way?
you just get a shirt slightly bigger, cut down the sides to get rid of the seams, then make cuts through both layers (it's easy to just leave the shirt bits laying flat on top of each other) and tie it all back up :)
if you get one the normal size or a tight shirt, you'll get well ... you know, a tighter tied-up shirt :P which can be cute :D haha
it just depends on what you're going for :)

but they're made exactly like those tied-edge blankies :)

A lady who works at my kids' summer camp did one of her staff t-shirts that way - and it's real cute!

As best as I could tell, she didn't cut off the bottom ((needed it to be long)) but cut up the sides to almost the armpits - then made cuts into the body of the shirt about 2" in and spaced about every 2" - then tied these together.

I haven't done this yet - but definitely plan to try it soon.

I haven't tried the frankencholi yet - but dug up some old crop top t-shirts while cleaning the garage. They were bought that way. They're uber big, so cutting out the back will be just the ticket to make them fit better. There's nothing to cut off at the bottom to make a tie band - maybe I can use strips from the back piece that I cut out. hmmmmm

      OR

I could cut and tie the back the way the it's described here with the sides cut-n-tied. Now there's an idea......

      Elle, share projects, woman! pleeeeze?

We're planning to be in a evening parade in mid-July here in Topeka...weatherwise...hot, hot, hot. If this happens I want to wear my white 25 yard skirt and thought a top like that out of a white t-shirt would be cute and cool.

        Zina,
You could also make a tie-top - I'm thinking it would be fairly easy. I think I've read this in one of my books from the Costume Goddess or I could be putting together bits-n-pieces I've heard. I haven't tried this yet...it's been "cooking" in my brain awhile though. It won't be long before it shows up in my wardrobe. :D

Use a moderately fitted t-shirt...anything too big will pull out of shape when tied in front
Cut up the middle front and cut off the neck ribbing - you might want to "V" it down the front some
Leave the front long and angle up to the sides and then straight across the back
To keep it from pulling up when you lift your arms - slit the sleeves from the shoulder out to the hem
I'd cut off the sleeve hemming too

I'm slowly working on a red t-shirt - thinking it may end up like this. So far I've split the sleeves, cut off the sleeve hemming and am hand sewing a tiny rolled hem along the cut edges. Small decorative roping or trim would look nice along the edges.

    Here you go, with visuals:

But instead of doing this to the back of the shirt, do it on each side. If you don't want that row of little knots all the way down the sides, another option is to take the "tabs" that have just been created out of those slashes and french braid them down to the bottom, then sew a straight stitch down the braid and it should be secure. I myself like the little knots all the way down, though :)

K, here's a picture of what I came up with. I'm almost embarrassed to say I work on something like this when I come to this tribe and see Maral's costume. :(

        Anyway, as promised...people.tribe.net/his_zina/...63c07dfe7.

Oh yea, the best part of this picture is my bedroom. I LOVE my thriftstore, shabby chic, garage sale bedroom! :)

That reminds me of the tease-shirts, from back in the day...pretty darn cool...but anyhow, I know exactly what you're talking about with the side slits...I had a friend that made one for me out of a shirt that I'd had airbrushed with the name of one of our favourite local bands on it...

If you'll get a tight t-shirt and cut off the bottom to the approximate length that you want...then stretch it to make it roll...then cut slits into the sides, a couple inches apart...and then stretch those, just like you did the bottom...it should give you the look you want...you could also do the same thing with the sleeves...just cut the neck and sleeve hems out, then cut the slits down down the sleeves...and do the stretchy thing, again...

Just make sure you use a shirt that's really tight, cuz once you do the stretching, it's gonna be a bit bigger...

If I can find the shirt, I'll post some pics...I know I've still got it...is kind of a sentimental thing, nowadays...be good for a rock and roll look, tho...

But you could definitely do a fancier one that you could preform in too! What a versatile top! I'm going to try my hand at it sometime. I've got that book, 108 ways to reconstruct a t-shirt (or something like that) somewhere around here too.
