Hi everybody, this is my first post in this tribe and I really hope that any of you talented people can help me with this:
I would like to sew a skirt similar to the one Didem is wearing in this video: www.youtube.com/watch but I have no idea how to make one! I'm not that experienced in sowing or patternmaking but I was hoping to get some help or inspiration from this excellent tribe...

Re: This skirt?
Thu, October 30, 2008 - 8:55 AMHi there!
The skirt is a basic "tier" design, with added ruffles to the outside.
Looks as though there are 5 tiers, the top one being "tied" on so that it is tight over the bum.
For ease, I would recomend doing a circle skirt, that's gathered into the waistband (or butt band as it looks like) Put ties at the sides to hold it together tightly... then sew on gathered ruffles to the circle skirt.
OR you can make a tier skirt, and add the ruffles as you piece the skirt together...
OOORRR you can find a local tailor to make it for you =) do you have friends who sew???
=) Its a beautiful skirt... as is her dance! I can piece it together in my brain, its just not coming out the way I want in words... -

The tier design I understand, but to me it seems like the front of the skirt is different from the back... Have posted a picture here, hope this clarifies what I mean: people.tribe.net/bb44fcce-...ba791e7150
I do have friends, and a mom, who sew but it wouldn't be very nice of me to tell them to sow this for me if I don't know how it's made :) I will probably ask them for help many times when I get started on this one though!
Yes, she is a beautiful dancer, and her Roma dances are wonderful.

Re: This skirt?
Thu, October 30, 2008 - 8:56 AMIt also looks allot like a flamenco skirt... may want to do a search for those... I know that there are some patterns out there for them
Burda carries one! -

Re: This skirt?
Thu, October 30, 2008 - 11:29 AMWill definitely check out Burda's patterns, it's not often I can purchase good patterns for bellydance costumes here in Sweden. Thank you :)

Re: This skirt?
Thu, October 30, 2008 - 9:56 AMIt does look a lot like a flamenco skirt. I suggest googling around for flamenco skirts and easy-to-sew flamenco skirt patterns. Once you get comfortable stitching up a "regular" flamenco skirt...you'll get ideas on how to *improve* the design to suit your style. :D :D :D

Re: This skirt?
Thu, October 30, 2008 - 6:06 PMIt looks to me like the tiers which circle the back end at the hips in the front, where their lower edges curve upwards rather than ending squarely (if that makes sense). The tiered front piece is a separate, slightly shorter panel (sewn in behind the up-curving parts?). Does that make any sense?
To put it another way:
top tier/yoke tight around hips, maybe slightly fitted/gathered/shaped.
2nd tier: wraps around back from hipbone to hipbone. Instead of being a standard rectangle, its ends are rounded up.
3rd tier is gathered to the 2nd one, and may have a similar curve at its ends.
Not sure if the lower tiers continue this pattern, but it seems likely.
I'm pretty sure there's more to it than that, but that's my impression. ;) -

Re: This skirt?
Thu, October 30, 2008 - 6:18 PMMy impression too. The back tiers don't match the front tiers, and they definitely curve up.
What I'm not sure about is that sometimes it looks to me like maybe the bottom tier or two in the back might not curve up, but continue around the whole skirt as it would normally. I see that the back tiers are longer than the front ones, but they curve up at the ends, so that when they're sewn in place you just have a skirt that's longer in back, so that final tier or two might be attached around the whole thing. Too lazy to go back and look again, though. -

Re: This skirt?
Fri, October 31, 2008 - 6:11 AMTaran, Margrrret,
thank you both for your replies!
I had a feeling that the skirt is made like you describe it but I couldn't explain it to myself.
It does seem like the two bottom tiers at the back are attached around the entire skirt and the difference in length between the front and the back is due to the tiers being "longer" in the back + the curving up as well as the back having four tiers while the front part has only three (or five vs. four if you count the top tier/yoke).
Now it's just a matter of being able to actually make the darn thing, but the try-and-fail approach is probably the best way to go... :) -

Re: This skirt?
Fri, October 31, 2008 - 6:15 AMHeehee, I of course meant Margaret, don't know where those extra rrr's came from. Maybe it was the annoyance with the telemarketing person who just called and tried to convince me to pay for things I already have...
