so made some red harem pants recently...and i used a sort of fake silk, very pretty, very soft and flowy, very cool temperature wise (dancing in the south outside on 4th of july, i NEEDED something not hot)
well i learned a lesson...........make sure you use the right needle on your machine for this type of material. i did not change the needle and just used a standard needle..........because ofh ow delicate this material is........it just keeps tearing up to the seams!!!!!!!! and i had to go back over it again with a smaller sized needle
(good thing i did dress rehearsal in these........cause it was my crotch that tore open during a level change rofl)

Re: silk harem pants....and their woes
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 7:45 AMOuch, that sucks! I used to do the same thing, not changing needles to match up with material, learned that the hard way several times.

Wed, July 1, 2009 - 8:27 AMAnd also, consider how to properly finish your seam for the fabric. E.g. silk essence frays like crazy--if you don't finish it properly, the seams will tear.

Re: silk harem pants....and their woes
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 11:04 AMOne of my daughters Thumbelina dolls has wings and wear they are sewn together there is a strip of like a plastic material I am assuming it is so the thread won't rip out through the soft material. Do you know what this is called? I thought about using it to fix and old scarf so it won't just rip even worse when I sew it. -Freya -

Re: silk harem pants....and their woes
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 1:45 PMI don't know about plastic but I use something called "Stay Tape" when I'm concerned. It's very thin so it doesn't add bulk to the seams. -

Flat felt seams...
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 5:54 PMI use flat-felt seams on harem pants and that really holds them together. Congratulations on doing the dry run! -

Re: Flat felt seams...
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 11:36 AMYou see them a lot on jeans. One of the ways to completely enclose a raw seam allowance and add durabiolity to the seam.
