2 Panel Skirt?

topic posted Sat, April 26, 2008 - 7:24 PM by  Talulah
I have some lovely sari fabric and was hoping to make a 2 panel skirt out of it, but I don't know how long it should be, or what width to make the panels. I know that the back panel is always wider than the front but do they meet on the sides? Help! I've never been much of a sewer but I can get buy on a simple hem! LOL

I'm thinking your questions have one answer - personal preference.

If I were to make one (haven't tried yet), I'd make the front panel as wide as my hipbones. The back panel would definitely be wider - to sorta' cover the, uh, bountiful booty I'm lugging around. They wouldn't meet at the sides, but I'd put them on a singe hip band just to make it easier to dress. As far as length goes, I'd probably make it about mid-calf-length.

I have a length of blue stripe silk that will make up a pretty panel skirt once I get around to making it.

I agree with Etana that it is totally a matter of personal preference. I've seen them all the way from mid thigh to ankle-length. I am about to make some and I plan to do the width just as Etana said. I'm either going to put them on a single piece of elastic, or I'm going to run a single piece of bias tape through them and tie it on one side. I'm thinking of making them almost ankle length, but I may decide to make them a bit shorter once I get going.

Oh, and if the turning under to hem thing turns into a pain, you can always get some bias tape and sandwich the sari between the folds, pin it in place and sew near the inside edge and come out with a pretty border! Of course, that's given that the sari is made from something that isn't so fancy that the bias tape would look funny against it.

Good luck! I'm sure it's going to be gorgeous! We all started out doing straight hems, too. Six months from now you may be sewing full costumes! :)

Yup it's all personal preference, including width of the panels. I've seen some lovely 2 panel skirts made from a table runner cut in half. So the width of both panels was the width of the table runner.

And scarfs. Let as not forget that there are TONS of fancy ones with fringe and a focused design at each end. serge down the middle and stick to bias tape ties. Ta-dah! no sewing skills involved. Just 2 straight lines.

Also, think if you are going to be putting another panel on top. If it is a lower layer panel, you will want to it a bit wider and longer. Most lower layer panels are of plainer stuffs, so put in to consideration how fancy your fabric is.

Thanks for the ideas! I think I'll do it mid-calf to ankle length and see how it comes out. I am going to thread a braided ribbon and 'shoe-lace' type tie through it. I'll post a pic when it's done!

for the lovely big-booty girls out there like myself, I make the back panel an inch or two longer than the front.

Oooh I never considered that!! Making one myself with some emerald green fabric that I ordered off ebay lol. I'll have to make the back panel longer to cover my booty.

How do you put the waist band together? I'm not brilliant at sewing either but I've got really big hips so I thought I'd have to make a band that goes round the waist and sew a zip in so that I can get it on. Is there an easier way of doing it without elastic? I'm not confident enough of my tailoring abilities to use elastic yet.

Elastic is your friend! Do not fear elastic - embrace it's elasticity!! ok, enough of that..

Easy elastic waistband - Materials Needed: Enough elastic to circle your hips + a little bit, enough wide bias tape to circle your hips twice + a bit extra, 2 big safety pins.

        Procedure:
        1. Cut the tape into two pieces, big enough to circle your hips + a little bit.
        2. Pin them together, wrong sides in, and stitch them together along the long edges to make a tube.
        3. Attach the panels to the waistband (bias tape tube) DO NOT SEW THE TUBE CLOSED!
        4. Use one pin to pin one end of the elastic to one end of the tube (leave the tube open). Put the other pin through the other end of the elastic, and using the pin as a guide, push it through the tube to thread the elastic through.

Now, you can be neat and hand stitch the ends of the elastic together, or "cheat" and use the safety pins to hold the elastic in place. You can hand stitch the ends of the tube together so the raw edges are hidden or "cheat and fold and tuck the raw edges under and pin or tape the ends together.

Lol this is why I joined this group!! Until today I did not know of the existence of a thing called bias tape :) I'll head down to my local fabric warehouse tomorrow and see what they come up with. Thanks so much for the help :)

**gasp** How could you live all this time w/o bias tape?! It's the best lazy-seamstress device ever!

This would be because I've never attempted making anything before!!! I only started dancing about 3 months ago and I only started making my own clothes out of necessity because I couldn't bear to be seen on stage in transparent pantaloons...

Then I totally urge you to take a few moments to surf around the 'net for some "How To" sites and bookmark them, maybe print out a page or two for reference, or pick up a basic sewing book when you get the bias tape.

Bias tape is a long strip of woven fabric cut so that the threads run diagonally across the strip at a 45 degree angle. This angle is called the Bias. Bias tape comes folded "single" or "double". Single fold bias tape has the long, raw edges pressed and folded under. This is the kind you want, in a wide width (Blanket binding will also work). Double fold bias tape is wide, single fold tape folded in half again. This will also work, if the second fold is unfolded so the strip lies flat with only the raw edges folded in. It might cost more than single fold.

Look for bias tape in packages by the zippers and threads. You'll see lots of other cool things there, like twill tape which is sturdy and great for laces, ties & re-enforcing, seam binding which is satiny and ribbon like and can be used as ribbon, and blanket binding, which is wide satin strips (not bias) with the edges folded in.

Oh, and speaking of Bias - Woven fabrics will not stretch sideways or lengthwise. But when tilted at that magic 45 degree bias - they DO stretch! So the bias tape also has a bit of stretch to it, allowing it to go around curves without puckering (much, in theory).

I have a shoebox full of bias tape, I have it in every color and width imaginable. I love bias tape, it is indeed the lazy seamstress' best friend. I recently bought little gadgets to cut your own bias tape, I haven't used them yet. Has anyone tried them before and how do like them?

When using the make your own bias tape, make sure your iron is nice and hot for the material your using. I use a bit of steam to help set it too. it's not to bad, I always feel like I need an extra hand. One to pull the fabric, one to hold the bias tool and one to iron it as it comes out. A little patience and a little practice. Making sure you cut the fabric correctly helps too. :) I accidently cut a bit crooked, I had some oddness with the bias tape I had made, it didn't want to lay right, it followed the crooked.

Use a pin. Put the fabric in the puller, hold it down with a pin. Push the pin all the way into the ironingboard fabric. Then, using the tip of the iron, pull the puller and move the iron at the same time. :)
