Hi all,
Sorry if this question has been posted before. But I have some nice sari fabric and would like to turn it into a skirt. I'm thinking a straight skirt with a slit. So I'm wondering if you know how to make a pattern for this type of skirt? I found a pattern on the Artemis Imports page, the Khariya skirts.

I'm really not much of a seamstress, so if it's not too difficult to create a pattern for this type of skirt, I'd like to save myself the cash.

Re: Skirt pattern
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 7:31 PMthat seems like it will be very easy. the only part that even has a curve is the part of the skirt going over the hip. if you have a way to finish the inside seam (surger, zig-zag stitch, w/e) then you can make it, put it on inside out, and (probably easier if a friend does this) pin the seams to you shape, sew that line, and use your closure of choice. other than that and the facing OR waistband it's just making pretty hems ^_^
good luck!

Re: Skirt pattern
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 11:28 PMhow much sari fabric do you have? Check out this outfit on ebay! It is gorgeous! It could also give you some ideas. If you want a straight skirt that you just step into and pull up, do as Fariha said as far as fitting, sew all of your edge seams, then fold the top edge over and sew a casing for an elastic waistband. Your belt will cover any elastic that may show, but if you have enough fabric you can have it wide enough that it has just a small amount of overlap around your hips, then when you run the elastic through you will be able to make the edges touch each other. If I'm wearing a shawl on my hips instead of a belt, I will pin the edges with a small decorative pin to keep elastic from becoming visible. Anyway, here is the ebay link. It is not a straight skirt, but I thought you would like to see what she did with her saris!

Re: Skirt pattern
Sat, July 26, 2008 - 12:46 PMThanks for the tips.
I've got about 4 yards of sari fabric. I think I can give the straight skirt a shot, since I did manage a big circle skirt. This way I have plenty left if I screw up, and can make something else with the leftovers.
Anyway, people might want to check out their local Joanne's. All their sari and brocades are sale for $4 a yard out here, don't know if it's nation-wide. But it's why I purchased the sari fabric, on a bit of a whim to make an old school Am cab skirt. -

Also, on that link I posted, her top is also made out of sari.
