Hello lovely and talented people! I need to pick your brains about a pirate bellydance costume. I have a rough idea of a Turkish vest with off-shoulder gypsy blouse underneath, 25-yard skirt, and salwar, but I could use some input as to color/pattern schemes and what to do for a belt. Thanks!

Re: Pirate Bellydance Costume - need ideas
Tue, October 21, 2008 - 8:31 AMOoooo! Stripes! I've done a few with blue stripes as well as black lately and have one in process that's grey. A corset belt looks great with the pirate theme, too.

Tue, October 21, 2008 - 8:32 AMStripes are pirate-y.. at least in my mind. And skulls and crossbones. I usually think of red, black and white for colours.

Re: Pirate Bellydance Costume - need ideas
Tue, October 21, 2008 - 2:28 PMdecide how pirate-y and how belly dance-y you want it. on the two extremes: you could make a pirate costume and simply add a hip scarf, or you could make a standard tribal or cabaret costume with simply pirate inspired fabric or shapes. you can go anywhere in between, and deciding how much of each you want might help you make decisions. ^_^ happy designing! -

Re: Pirate Bellydance Costume - need ideas
Tue, October 21, 2008 - 2:29 PMwhat i mean is: do you want it to look like a pirate who belly dances, or a belly dancer in a pirate costume (assuming that a dance costume isn't a "costume" in this sense.) or somewhere in between. ^_~

Re: Pirate Bellydance Costume - need ideas
Wed, October 22, 2008 - 4:16 AMI did a piratey bellydance costume and did a tutorial for the top I made, too ;)
Here's the tutorial to make a peasant type shirt (out of a regular shirt):

Here's a collection of photos of bits of the costume (bra, belt, bustle skirt, foofy skirt, top, etc):

And here's the final thing:

What you can't see are the bloomers and knee-high boots I had on underneath :)

Re: Pirate Bellydance Costume - need ideas
Sun, October 26, 2008 - 1:40 PMTry to skip the whole black and red thing. It is so cliche and so halloweeny (how's that for a made up word?). I went to a pirate festival last weekend and the people who looked most authentic were the ones wearing brocades and outfits that looked a little worn. After all, there was probably a lot more sailing and swabbing than swashbuckling in the day to day life of a pirate. Think texture too. That's another way in which brocade is a winner.
On the subject of all things pirate...I just have to share the awesomeness of this hat:

Re: Pirate Bellydance Costume - need ideas
Mon, October 27, 2008 - 7:23 AMThanks ladies! I just did a bunch of sketches based on your comments. What I am looking for is an actual outfit for dancing in, that when not dancing I could then throw a long pirate coat on over it and enjoy other pirate-y activities. Also not sure what colors to use if not black/red. Maybe black/navy/wine with brocade vest, I have a patterned head scarf in navy/wine so maybe I can pull the colors from that. -

Re: Pirate Bellydance Costume - need ideas
Wed, November 12, 2008 - 12:22 PMNavy and wine sounds pretty! My husband has a gorgeous pirate outfit in blue and chocolate brown. I don't want to say that black and red never work (Misha's costume is gorgeous!) but you have to work harder to keep it looking both unique and authentic since the hollywood-esque, halloweeny costumes like to use those colors as a base. Please take pictures of your finished outfit!
