Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 8:58 PMI don't ever have to buy feathers...I find them wherever I go!!! They just seem to be waiting for me.
That being said, I second the idea of fishing shops...altho most of those are gonna be small. You might also try some of the import shops...the type that have exotic furniture and goods...most of the time you can find peacock feathers at them. -

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 9:58 PMHow big do you want them?
We have dyed goose feathers here in some WWWWIIILLLLDDD colours. Reminds me...next time I'm at the craft place I'm gonna buy some.
I really want to make a fun little fascinator with some funky feathers on it!

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 6:26 AMwhen i was back home, i'd find hawk feathers all over the place
sometimes really pretty blacky-greeny feathers
i'm wary about buying feathers because alot of birds, ESPECIALLY geese and ducks, are live-plucked, and that's just not cool. probably like having your hair ripped out. -

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 12:14 PMDepending on where you live it can be illegal to collect bird feathers especially from raptors. -
-
Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 12:25 PMOh, absolutely...it's illegal to possess feathers from birds of prey...I've got a friend that works with the American Wildlife Association that does raptor rehabilitation and even the shed feathers can't be used...damnit...:-( -

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 5:45 PMYes, be careful with picking up feathers. I've heard some horror stories about people who picked up feather for dream catchers and got in big trouble because of the types of birds they came from originally!
I like the idea of going to the pet store or even finding friends who have birds. -

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 4:18 AMMy husband, a Native American, with proof of it on paper can have eagle feathers. We collect them from the (unfortunately caged) ones at the local zoo. We have several pieces of blessed Native art that the feathers are then tucked into.
Wal-Mart (I know, eeew) carries bright, rainbow colored feathers in the craft section. Those that still have a craft section that is. -

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 9:04 AMI had a friend who went to pet stores and picked them up off the ground or got them from the employees. I don't support pet stores, but at least you know that the feathers were shed naturally rather than being plucked. She had a beautiful collection of feathers.
I've also had luck at Michaels.

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 9:09 AMThere's a costume supplier/shop here in Kansas City that sells all kinds of feathers in all different lengths and colors. I find that places that also sell (a) hats or hat making supplies, or (b) feather boas also sell feathers alone.

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 11:58 AMI wish I could have brought all the feathers that I collected while I was in Oz back with me...I had lots of magpie feathers and some rainbow lorikeet ones...and a couple of cockatoo feathers, too...but I'd probably have gotten in trouble for them...they don't like you trying to bring those sorts of things thru customs...but I know they'll be there when I get back...and they're going to become costume pieces...I LOVE my feathers...!!!
As far as black feathers go, I've found lots of crow feathers here...I make hair danglies out of them...put them on strips of leather that I tie in my hair...

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 1:04 PMBellatrix beat me to the costuming shop shop suggestion! I know it's the wrong time of year now, but I've bought feathered Christmas ornaments, taken them apart, and used the parts for hair decorations.

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 4:18 PMcheck your local yellow pages for craft stores and call around.
Or, look for bird rescues or sanctuaries and ask about feathers. Many will be happy to collect and save them for you, in exchange for a small donation. Not only will you get great feathers, but you'll be helping the birdies, too

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 4:42 PMIf you have a grandmother like me who used to own like.....eight peacocks then you could get those feathers for free! :-) That was THE ONLY perk to having those birds around. They may look pretty but they're mean as hell and annoying when they screech! Blagh!
~I get some of mine from craft stores around the area. ~ -

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 5:51 PMyou could try walking around the fields or woods. in ny where i live i find hawk and (a lot of!) turkey feathers. not very colorful, but big. you can also acid dye them if you find light enough ones. (be careful to observe safety with acid dyes- no food and esp. no containers that could have condensation on them in the room, particle mask and gloves when mixing, etc)
you might have better luck with that around matting season though. the boys are fighting and they loose some feathers during it. -

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 6:45 AMwandering around in nature you can find a hell lot of beautiful things ;-)
personnally i'm a big fan of parrots and parakeets, have a few small ones myself, but the interest has got me into contact with breeders. so all my feathers come from friendly breeders who picked them off the floor of their aviaries for me :-) gives me huuuge satisfaction, as it incorporates into my costume my passion for these birds, plus the colors, shapes and sizes are insaaane! plus the fact that you know they are authenitic, natural, and no bird was harmed.
of course hafta wait for molting season to get them but hey, well worth the wait :-)
so if you can, i'd suggest to you to get into contact with parrot / parrakeet (or any tropical birds... some of the tropical pheasants are uncomparably beautiful!) breeders' clubs in your areas, most breeders would be more than pleased to help out ;-)

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 6:18 PMBe careful in showing those hawk feathers...it's illegal to possess them...even if you find them lying on the ground... -

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 7:35 PMthanks! i didn't know that.
it's mostly turkey-vulture feathers that we find.
i remember our vacation to Alaska, we found a hulava lot of bald eagle feathers, but had to leave them because we would have been arrested going threw vancouver and back to the states and customs. i didn't know about hawks though. (i see like, 3-5 ever drive down the highway i take! they love to wait for road kill ^_^) -

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 9:10 PMYe, I love them, too...just saw a Redtail today...and there's a nesting pair in the woods next to my property...I wish I *could* use their feathers...I've found a few...and found a whole pile of them while walking one day...apparently a predator got to it...but I still had to leave all the feathers behind...the poor thing....
All birds of prey are protected in this country...hawks, eagles, owls...and possession of their feathers carries some pretty heavy penalties...so, as gorgeous as they may be, they're not worth going to jail over...just enjoy seeing them in the wild and appreciate the fact that they're looked after... -

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 9:41 PMSportsmans Wherehouse, do you have that there? They carry them for lure making....GORGEOUS ones, too. I doubt they are cruelty free though, considered there is about every sort of animal mounted in that store.

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 9:49 PMI can remember way back when I was in scouting, I was involved in "Native American Indian Dance". I can remember people being disqualified at various "Pow-Wows" for using illegal feathers from birds of prey in their head dresses and other parts of their outfit. I believe that it is legal for those feathers to be used on Indian Reservations by members of that particular tribe, during ceremonies, but not to be sold for profit. I had never thought that much of it, but I was always content using artificial feathers, as I do have some very liberal views on animal rights and preservation of nature and the environment, but at the same time respectful of "Native American" heritage.

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 10:33 PMOooh...do you know anyone that may have an emu farm? They're getting more and more popular and the feathers are sooooo pretty...I have a pair of earrings that my fiance got me that are made of emu feathers...they're delicate and ruffly, like...an since they're white, I'd think they could be dyed, if you did it carefully... -

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 10:44 PMI was in my local pet store buying cat food the other day and they had a whole bunch of peacock feathers for sale as cat toys. I didn't check the price though as I have my own vase full of them from a friend's peacock.

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 8:00 AM(a little off but,) when i was a kid, we drove threw a free rangeish zoo, and either an emu or an ostrich stuck it's head in the slightly open window, and tried to eat me while i was stuck in my car seat! they are scary mother ....ers! -

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 12:57 PMOoops...so maybe the emu feathers are out? I bet that did scare the bejoobies out of you...they are, indeed, rather intimidating.
As far as peacock feather go, I don't think I've seen any around for less than $1.00 each...I got all mine from a friend...they're all over my house!!! -

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 4:11 PMoh, i'm not looking for feathers ^_^ emu/ostrich feathers are gorgeous though, so long as they aren't attatched to be bird ^_^
oh, and acid dyes do work on them ^_^ -

Re: Where does everyone get thier...
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 4:56 AMYears ago I used to live in Phoenix, they had a Wildlife Park outside town with an awesome aviary. I used to take my girls 2 or 3 times a week when they were little. We would walk thru the aviary and pick up feathers from the ground, put them in a plastic bag, and when we got home I would clean them up with an old eyebrow brush. After a while the aviary staff would save any big colorful feathers for me. It was a sweet deal. Alas, I haven't lived there for 12 years, and no longer have access to all of the free feathers I can collect, sure wish I did though.
Try posting on one of the community free-cycle lists, someone with birds would probably be glad to give you feathers.
