Ok, I've been thinking about making a metal bra. And not just a bra that has metal on it. I FINALLY found an artist who has done something similar to what I was thinking about doing.

It would be very difficult I'm sure, but does anyone have any ideas of how I would do something like this myself? If not, is there any bellydance costumer who does stuff like this?

Fri, April 25, 2008 - 2:16 PMOnce In A Blue Moon is the same vendor that made the metal cups on Sharon's bra in the pic that you posted.
Without significant metalsmithing skills this would be a difficult task. You start from flat sheet metal, pierce and saw your design, then form it to shape delicately with hammers, and then add the repousse/chasing to make the raised flowers. If you really want to do it yourself find a metalsmithing course at a local community college and sign up. It takes time to learn the skills and the tools can be expensive. -

Re: Metal Bra?
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 3:13 PMA dancer in the troupe I'm a member is buying a faux metal-bra from www.organicarmor.com/ It looks like they make their "metal" bras out of rubber, which is supposed to be lighter and easier to wear. I would imagine that crafting the rubber would be easier than welding, but I'm baised because I've worked with rubber-stuff before and never welded. -
-
Re: Metal Bra?
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 7:52 PMThere is really no welding involved. The hard part would be forming the cup. you can buy metal smithing "cups" that are just half or third domes that are inside-out. You cut out a bigger piece and hammer it into the bowl. Problem being, boobs aren't perfect half circles. You would have to find or make yourself a bowl with the proper contours of your own boobs.
Time+money+experimentation supplies+other extraneous things=cheaper to buy from Once in a Blue Moon. -

Re: Metal Bra?
Tue, May 20, 2008 - 8:32 PMYou don't need a form exactly the shape of your breast or even the shape of your bra. It can be worked on an anvil or slowly beaten out in
a dip that you have made into a hardwood log. It is well worth taking a class in metal working! It's as much fun as dancing!!!!!! Oh, there is
also a device called a panel beater's bag that is a leather or canvas bag filled with lead shot. It is used to hammer shapes. It takes practice, but the practice is half the fun! Don't be afraid of the metal! You can do a lot with just cutting and forming.... then, if you want, you
can learn to join (solder, braze, weld).

Re: Metal Bra?
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 8:36 AMI'm making my husband build me some. He makes armor in the SCA and mundanely he's a welder, so basically he spends 98% of his time working with metal hehe. He did a pair of lightning bolt borders for me (very Rolling Thunder) earlier this year, and he promised to make me full cups this summer. We'll see how it goes. He did a full suit of plate steel for himself so he thinks the cups will be pretty easy. -

Re: Metal Bra?
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 6:38 AMFascinating D.I.Y. projects you ladies have in mind! My only question is what kind of a budget are you on? Do you think I could make something convincing with old baked bean cans and a pair of tin shears? LOL!!
Seriously, you've given me some ideas for how to make use of that old, soft leather jacket that's been sitting in the mending pile for ever.... can it really be 31 years since I bought it??? it must have been at least 2 years before we got married!
I'll have to check that my lovely wife's sewing machine can handle leather and then go to the drawing board and to ebay for studs and rivets. -

Re: Metal Bra?
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 7:30 AMOooo! If you got a can with ribs in it, it would provide some interesting line textures. :D
I was actually thinking of taking my heavy duty scissors to a coke can because the metal would be somewhat flexible, but then visions of me splitting my fingers on the sharp sides deterred me. -

Re: Metal Bra?
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 10:43 AMHello, I have a roll of aluminum metal sitting in my utility room, and last year bought the tin snips and a peen hammer, but the project has been put aside! I have 2 beautiful metal cups from Lallah (probably spelled wrong) and one is a dragon eye and received a scallopped one this Feb. I would not trade these for the world! I love my metal cups, and being a ddd size cup, they cost more, but actually bought her dd's and they worked.

Re: Metal Bra?
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 10:57 AMAnyone seen this site? www.pitbullarmory.com/womens.html From the looks of it it's BDSM oriented but their products could probably be adapted by the addition of a few DIY jingly bits. -

Re: Metal Bra?
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 11:08 AMWhere did you get your aluminum at?
I believe it's spelled Laylah, and her bras are fantatic to look at, no doubt. However, I am an artist and designer and have a constant influx of ideas that I want to make. I want most of everything I have to have my signature on it, my design. (I'm selfish like that ;D) I can't stand it if another dancer has something similar to what I'm wearing. So it's either an "I do it, or I don't want" it type thing. -
-
Re: Metal Bra?
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 5:07 PMI bought my roll of aluminium at Lowe's and have seen it at Home Depot. It is where they sell gutters and stuff and they sell like different lengths and thickness of the aluminum. I also bought some aluminum looking wrap stuff from HObby Lobby that came in Silver, Gold, and brass and that is a lot thinner than the aluminum I bought a Lowe's. Of course, my projects are sitting there, and nothing has been done. Not that many dancers have metal cups, Laylah's husband stays so busy and backed up with his metal working , and by the time he makes the bras for the ladies, I don't think there are 1000's out there. I still love my bra!
