Short Vest Pattern?

topic posted Tue, May 13, 2008 - 8:32 AM by  Faedra
I've decided to make a short leather V-neck vest with my newly aquired leather but I can't find a pattern for a short vest anywhere. Picture a sleeveless v-neck choli that laces up the front and at the sides instead of seams. I've looked everywhere and can't find anything! All I really need is a short vest pattern, like a turkish vest that isn't an underbust. Do you have a favorite, or know a site that you would recommend? Thanks so much!

You might find something from Folkwear: www.folkwear.com/patternindex.html

Or, how are you at altering patterns? Sometimes I got to JoAnne's and peruse the $1.99 patterns for something that has the right lines and then alter it. That might work too.

Not bad at altering them provided its simple alternations like changing the neckline or shortening things. Major alterations like reconstructing things is a little tougher!

You could probably do it easily then. If you could find a pattern with the basic shape you want, then you could alter the neckline. If it doesn't work then all you've lost is a cheap-o pattern (assuming you try it out on throw away fabric first, not your happy new leather). And if it works you can make a better pattern out of butcher paper or something.

Or, you could get and Atira or Folkwear pattern and just alter the neckline.

Many possibilites. You're clever, I can't wait to see what you come up with. :o)

simplicity 5359 has a pattern for a vest or "choli" top that can be modified. take the sleeves off, and lace up the sides =)
    Simplicity's 2941 also has a vest pattern...
4079 can be shortened into a vneck short vest...

Holy crap, I'm a dork. There *is* a pattern that is closer to what you are looking for. I haven't tried it though I've been curious.

    www.madamexcostumes.com/newpag...ns.html

Madame X' pattern # 9803 - Adjustable Ghawazee Coat and Turkish Vest. It's laced up on the sides.

That might be a better starting point.

This one doesnt lace the way she is wanting it to lace.

I have the pattern, I love it, but for what she is going to need, I recomend using a commercial pattern (like simplicity) and doing some minor alterations on them...

But it's a great pattern really!

Artemis Imports has several styles of short vest patterns. www.artemisimports.com

Click on Costume Patterns, scroll down, and look for Saadia's Vest (this pattern runs SMALL!!!!), scroll down farther for the Adjustable Vest, and still farther down is Turkish Dancer

just remember the fitting over your bust when altering, if you haven't actually studied pattern drafting (or-even if you have, as my vest shows...hahaha >.> ...... <.<..... ) then it can be tricky to switch the darts into princess seams or into the other seams. to that end, don't worry about the length, sleeves, necklines, or any of that, just that you have a way to fit it and the seams are where you want them.
