So I've bought the base for my first coin bra and I've got all the accessories to put on it. Now I just need to get started building it.
I've read tons of tutorials so I think I'm set on the actual technique, but one thing I can't seem to find -- even searching tribe.net before posting -- was an answer to this question: what material should the straps be?
I've read some tutorials that use elastic and some that use twill tape, and some that use twill tape and then cover the tape with lycra. I'm not sure which to do. It seems like elastic would pull with the weight of the coins and you'd need something with less stretch to it, like the cotton twill tape. And I'm not sure what the benefit is in covering the twill tape straps unless you're using a color that doesn't match your bra.
Any clarity on this is much appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Coin bra straps
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 1:06 PMI think people cover the twill tape to match the fabric they use to cover the bra because, well, twill tape isnt very pretty ;-) I also think twill tape would dig into your neck or shoulders on its own if you have alot of decoration on your bra. -

Tue, May 13, 2008 - 4:33 PMIs twill tape the same thing as bias tape? Could that be used if you're doing a cross-back configuration that ties? -

Re: Coin bra straps
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 6:59 PMtwill tape is a different weave than bias. bias is a plain weave cut on the bias. so, as the bias of fabric does, it will stretch. twill tape does give a little bit, but it is designed not to. i believe jeans are a kind of twill weave (although these days they usually have some spandex mixed into them to provide wearing ease via stretch)

Re: Coin bra straps
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 1:11 PMI generally use grosgrain ribbon, two layers stitched together if the bra has heavy decoration. I cover the ribbon with the same fabric as the rest of the bra, unless I can get a perfect color match.

Re: Coin bra straps
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 6:31 AMIf your coin bra cover is heavy, then ideally you want a bra base that will stay (mostly) up without straps. If you rely only on the straps to hold it up, the straps may dig painfully due to the weight no matter what they're made of!
I use lots of things for straps. Grosgrain ribbon decorated with trim or covered with fabric that matches the bra. Thick elastic covered with the same fabric that covers the bra or (when the straps will be hidden by a top), bias tape tubes. Satin, velvet, or other decorative ribbon lined with twill tape also works.
Also, back to my first point, if you are big busted or the coins are heavy I strongly suggest avoiding halter style straps. Instead, try straps that criss cross in back. Or over the shoulder straps, but with a horizontal strap connecting the two shoulder straps, located high on the back but still below that sensitive point where the neck and body join (H strap). Or, make a halter style strap, but sized so that it reaches below that sensitive point, and add a single long vertical strap to connect it to the band at the back ( I strap).
