what are you're alls thoughts?
I know a flouce requires significantly more fabric... is it worth it (talking bottom of a large skirt here) when we aren't talking KC fluffy rufflies?
or do you think the galloping horse rule comes into play and its not that big of a deal?

Re: flouce vs ruffle
Tue, May 12, 2009 - 7:05 AMI'd say the galloping horse rule comes into play here. I'd do ruffles around the hemline of a long, mega-yard-at-the-hem skirt. I'd do flounces for any skirt where the *ruffle* is more noticeable or more necessary to the overall effect ......like flamenco style skirts with the fronts at knee level or higher and the back is almost floor length. <<After all, if you're gonna' put all that fabric and work into it, it should be *admirable*, right??>> -

Tue, May 12, 2009 - 6:44 PMI fifth it, with the emphasis on what is needed: they are such different looks and affect the drape of the whole costume in such different ways! -

Re: flouce vs ruffle
Wed, May 13, 2009 - 5:43 AMsee there in lies my problem...
I have mega yard here... and the skirt I saw was a flounce... but I get the feeling I'm going to seriously drop a dime on fabric if I do a flounce not a ruffle...
(I think I have over 10 panels of circle skirt.... thats a lot of friggin flounce.)
I'm thinking that the sheer weight of numbers is against me in that just gathering it and making it pretty is going to be better than attempting to fight a flounce and all that fabric, cause that will probably cost me between 50-100 bucks. Right now the skirt is hovering at 100 (32, 28 and 19) yeah... plus the 90 bucks to fix the machine... um and then here and there.
but the orginial skirt is a flouce thats why I was checking to see what ya'll thought. =)

Tue, May 12, 2009 - 1:59 PMClaire,
...if you can't see it from the back of a galloping horse, your audience won't either
<<or something to that effect>> -

Re: flouce vs ruffle
Tue, May 12, 2009 - 7:44 PMok, so what exactly is the difference between a flounce and a ruffle? -
-
Re: flouce vs ruffle
Tue, May 12, 2009 - 9:43 PMA ruffle is a straight piece of fabric, gathered at the top edge. A flounce is basically a donut (or fraction of a donut) cut out of fabric, with the inner "ring" of the donut serving as the top edge.
Here's a previous thread about it: tribes.tribe.net/diycostum...a4e8572892 for some more info. -

Wed, June 3, 2009 - 1:52 PMBellatrix!
How do you do that? 1. Search for older threads. 2. Put them in your reply. -
-
Re: flouce vs ruffle
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 2:45 PM#1: Go to the main page for the particular tribe you are wanting to search through. See the "Search" box right below the "active members" photos & right above the topics/photos/listings tabs? Type what you're looking for there -- specific buzz words help, like "flounce" or "tiered skirt". It'll give you pages of thread results.
#2: When you find the thread you want, copy the URL (at the top of your browser window) & paste that into your repsonse.

Re: flouce vs ruffle
Wed, May 13, 2009 - 5:24 PMSherry,
they are similar, they create a lovely layer of fabric that is fluffy and light and has movment.
Each drap differently due to how the fabric is cut.... it is the difference is more simply a tierd skirt vs a circle skirt. only smaller. thats the difference, the result is the same, lovely skirt w/ life that moves and lots of yardage at the bottom... but made completely different ways.
=) thats it in a nut shell, I just wanna know if I can cut the corner to a ruffle instead of doing the fabric for a flounce... is it really THAT big of a difference. -

Re: flouce vs ruffle
Sun, May 31, 2009 - 1:45 AMFor a very large yardage skirt, I would be concerned about the weight of the skirt and the possibility of it being so heavy that one could walk out of it...... (this could be funny!) ;-0 or you could be spinning and get too much momentum to stop! (Sorry, this happens when I stay up too late!) Anyway, post pix for us when you finish! I'm sure it will be gorgeous!

Re: flouce vs ruffle
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 6:25 AMlol
SO true!
I got to test run said skirt last night, I really need to get a feel of it so I said screw it, I have to wack off the bottom inch or two anyway so it doesn't matter if it frays a little (not easily frayable material to start with) and OMG its gorgeous in motion. once you get it there. That whole inertia law tends to really kick in... that whole things at rest tend to stay at rest and things in motion tend to stay in motion....
yeah.
definitly was practicing spinning (integral part of my song/performance) and I think I'm going to have to have a heavier duty tie + a possible elastic) AND pin it to whatever pants I so deem fit to take the beating... cause that sucker will spin around you if you stop. lol
wow. =)
I think I'm going ot go w/ a shorter coloured ruffle over a slightly longer under ruffle. if I can A. afford it and B. find the time to but it together. Its already probably 10lbs of skirt easily lol so whats another 10 yards of ruffle!
Can't wait to get pictures of it flying around in a big heap! -

Re: flouce vs ruffle
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 11:16 AMI just cringe when I think of how much money and work you've put into that skirt...but, I'll bet it'll be a work of ART... -

Re: flouce vs ruffle
Tue, June 9, 2009 - 9:05 AMlol NO SHIT! Thats one reason its taken me like 3-4 months to make it!
ha ha ha we are sitting right around 100 at this point I think. so really not TO bad. (cringes ducks for next big bill)
Priced out some predone ruffle trims, gorgeous venician style lace that was like butter... fortunately for ME it was lol the wrong colour cause at 12 bucks a yard and over thirty yards of hem I would have died.
So I think upcoming this week JoAnnes is having a 50% off any one item deal. So I might cave and buy one of my trims at 5 a yard.
*might*
Lol I think I've settled on a blank under ruffle of 4" w/ a red 2 inch ruffle on top. All pictures are in my phone and clearly I'm not going to spend money on that one to send them to tribe.
But. I'll probably make the black ruffle by hand. Gag me. And then do the red one predone just to save time, hopefully can find it somewhere cheaper than JoAnnes, but shrug we shall see. THeir black ruffle was a chiffon and would not ohld up to gettting stepped on and dragged on the floor.
Sadly my truck needs to hub assembly's and new sway bar links, all to the tune of 800 bucks. So yeah my budget just hit a brick wall this month. Sigh. MIght hem it up for the time being and add on later lol. Wait a month or two.
Thanks guys for all your help... such a wonderful source of comfort in my skirt issues! -

But I don't have pictures yet!!! I'm a little crabbtastic about that. I will have a video of the performance in the next week or so!
LOl but thanks for reminding me- I actually need to go through and re do some hems- I screwed up and used a basting stitch for some areas that needed some more reinforcement. =) -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
