Hi guys,
Me and a fellow troupe member wanted a certain wrap top for a certain show that we will be doing. Only, our problem was that the vendor from whom we could get the top didn't have it in our size and color and it would have taken 3-4 weeks before getting the size and color that we needed and the show was sooner than that.
Said troupe member (Khalidah on tribe here) asked a friend who is a professional seamstress or designer (I forget which) about some ideas. She said to use pattern #2632 from Kwik Sew and modify it as follows (did it and it works beautifully; will post pictures as soon as I get any, which will be in a few weeks):
You want view B. Here are the changes you will need to make.
1. You will have to extend the ties so that they are long enough to go around and tie in the back if you want them that way. I would suggest you extend from the middle rather than the ends of the ties. What you will need to do is mark a line in the middle of the tie portion, extend the amount you need and then add in the end of the tie. Like you would on the tissue paper patterns with the line that says "lengthen or shorten here."
2. You will have to draft the flutter at the end of the sleeve. That's easy. What you will do is draw a triangle......uh....what's the kind called that the side of a pyramid looks like?? That kind. Now you will lop off the top of the triangle so it's the same width as the sleeve at the forearm. That way you will end up with a shape that the top and bottom lines are parallel
and the two sides are convergent....but you will cut them off before they converge at the top. Make sense? Ok. Then you will turn that upside down. The top of the triangle (where you cut it off) will become the part that attaches to the "real" sleeve pattern. Now, you can do that 2 ways. You can cut it as a separate piece and have a seam on the forearm of the sleeve. Or
you can draft it as one piece. If you do that, your underarm seam will run from the bottom of the armscye to the beginning of the flounce.

Mon, January 23, 2006 - 1:40 PMhey, celeste!
for those of us who are spatially impaired, is there ANY chance of posting a photo? i ask because it's hard for me to picture the directions you gave without seeing something to relate it to. i am really new at this, so please forgive if it's rude to ask.

I've used that pattern and was very pleased with the results. I like your ideas, though and will most likely use them on my next one.
Thanks

Re: Wrap top (a success story)
Thu, March 2, 2006 - 4:58 PMHi Celeste!
Thank you for sharing your sewing success! I'm wondering, when you made your top, is there any stretch in your lace fabric? I have the pattern Kwik Sew 2632 and I have made the top with a stretchy knit (hot pink with sparklies). It turned out wonderfully!
I have loads of fabric (non-stretch lace included) and I'm wondering how well the end result would be. Please advise when you can and Congratulations on making your top! You should be soo proud of yourself!

Re: Wrap top (a success story)
Fri, March 3, 2006 - 7:34 AMYes, my lace fabric was VERY stretchy. The mock that I did was less stretchy and worked as well. Actually, the difference between the 2 tops is that the mock wraps in front and ties in the back and the lace top can wrap in front, then back, then tie in front... or I can definitely tie it in the back.
One of my tribe sisters did the same pattern with a non-strech lace fabric and it just will not tie in the back. It still looks good, imo, but it does not wrap around; it just ties in the front. So it looks very much like the drawing on the pattern. -

Re: Wrap top (a success story)
Fri, March 3, 2006 - 8:50 AMOkay, cool! I'll try it with a non-stretchy fabric, lenghthen the ties and see what happens! I don't mind knotting it in the front.
Yayayay! I can raid my fabric supplies!

Re: Wrap top (a success story)
Fri, March 3, 2006 - 12:33 PM:o)
My husband tried to make me go through my stash before buying new fabric. His idea was that the stash would go away. The deal now is to look through my stash first and if I don't have anything that would work then I buy new fabric... So I still buy lots of new fabric but I have to admit that my stash is diminishing, though. ;o) Anyway, stashes are a different topic altogether!
