I may never have the patience to make one, but they are so pretty! I'm curious as to the width of the tiers for a skirt with a 25 yard hem. I've made 10 yard skirts, with four tiers, and I just rip strips of fabric selvage to selvage, then sew these together. I use one strip for the top tier, 2 for the second, 4 for the third, and 7 or 8 for the fourth. How many strips would you use in making a 25 yard-er? I'm guessing the bottom tier would be around 20, but what about the others?

Re: 25 yard skirts
Mon, December 3, 2007 - 10:39 PMfor 45 inch wide fabric, I do 12-15 "strips" for the skirts I sell...
then 6-8
and then 2-3 and gather into a waistband, and use a drawstring. most of them are "fitted" within a few inches. -

Re: 25 yard skirts
Tue, December 4, 2007 - 9:36 AMThey have to be don't they? Otherwise the weight would pull them right off your hips. I know the 12 yard skirt I just made weighs a ton and I used really lightweight broadcloth. -

Re: 25 yard skirts
Wed, December 5, 2007 - 8:48 AMYes... I made a "10 metre" skirt a few weeks ago. Used a lightweight eyelet cotton, which I think is beautiful because the embroidery is faintly reminiscent of banjara stylings.
It's as heavy as I'd want a skirt to be for dancing in, so as I've been considering a 25 yarder, I've been keeping an eye open for lighter weights like batiste, some of the softer, lighter lawns, and especially some lovely indian voiles. See-through, all of them, but I'd either line the top tier or two, or pay closer attention to tribal dress standards than I have been so far (*always* pantaloons!). (And the silk i just bought has been calling, too - but the slitheriness of it has had me thinking hard).
I made the top tier almost fitted also. More, in my case, for vanity rather than fabric weight. I'm thinking, if I went as light as the voile the weight wouldn't be a major issue, but I'd have to undergo quite a change in body shape to consider heavy gathers right on the hips! As far as I'm concerned, wearing belts and tucking the hem up into the waist-band - that's enough to add any visual oomph needed. -

Re: 25 yard skirts
Thu, December 6, 2007 - 2:01 PMI signed up as a wholesale vendor at India Bazaar, and purchased a 25-yd skirt, black w/hot pink bottom tier, dyed-to-match 1/2 circle silk veil, and a choli for about $70 + shipping. The skirt is awesome and fabulous. SO huge and fluffy!! Light as a feather and surprisingly not that sheer. I don't think I could make an ensemble for that price, esp w/ the dyed to match veil.
Their retail prices might be higher, but the only qualification for wholesale price is sign up and make a purchase within 30 days of signing up. -

Mon, February 4, 2008 - 3:38 PMOkay, I have now been "Up close and personal" with more than one vendor of 25 yard skirts. And I can honestly say--they are NOT all created equal!!!
Wendy, your skirts are top quality and huge (as in "big fluff") compared to one of the other more expensive ones!!!! You have become the "official" 25 yd skirt Vendor for my troupe and I will be encouraging students to purchase from you as well. Thank you so much for providing such quality work!!!

Re: 25 yard skirts
Wed, October 29, 2008 - 10:24 AMI use a circle skirt pattern as the top tier, as I find gathering a "tube" into a waistband is too bulky to wear with belts over the top (I have reasonably narrow waist and wider hips). Also it gives you the maximum hem size on the top tier to then gather onto, making it easier to get a bigger skirt. I then make the tiers the same way as you, tearing selvage to selvage, but I only use circle plus two tiers.
It requires a little geometry to work out the size of the circle skirt pattern for the top tier, and how many selvage strips you need to gather on, but it's all reasonably approximate and works out well.
For me I make the top tier just above knee length. I make them with a waistband as big as my hips plus some ease, which then has a drawstring and elastic (the elastic helps it sit evenly around my waist and the drawstring keeps it on). Being hip as opposed to waist for the waistband circumference gives even more hem circumference on the top tier.
The tiers are then sewn on the bottom as usual.
If anyone wants to see my geometry for the circle skirt, I'll draw it out scan it and post it, but it's pretty straightforward.
