Re: what to sew coins on with...
Fri, March 30, 2007 - 10:14 PMI use dental floss to sew mine on because its tough as nails and very strong, but not as hard to work with as fishing line. -

Re: what to sew coins on with...
Sat, March 31, 2007 - 5:36 AMDental floss is strong, but if you are using it against a black background it will show (using waxed floss will prevent it from tangling while you work). Quiliting thread is stronger than regular sewig thread and has some body to it. My favorite thing to use though is a thread made for beading called Nymo, it comes in lots of different colors and is very, very strong.

Sat, March 31, 2007 - 7:43 AMI like to attach all my coins to chain and then sew the chain down. It lets them move more. I usually just use quilting thread.

Re: what to sew coins on with...
Sat, March 31, 2007 - 10:37 AMUpholstery thread works great for stiching anything you want to attach in a secure manner. I also use it on costumes to reinforce points that take lots of wear and tear or have to support weight and pulling stresses, like when attaching new bra straps or fasteners. It comes in a variety of colors, mostly neutral, so it's easy to match especially for tribal fusion gear. -

Sat, March 31, 2007 - 11:16 AMIf you used unwaxed dental floss you can "colour" it with a Sharpie to match any costume you have..
Another readily available thread is carpet thread. I use it too sew my teddy bears together and fix my hip scarves.. It comes in about a dozen colours too..

Re: what to sew coins on with...
Sat, March 31, 2007 - 11:44 AMI haven't sewen on many coins, but I've added some dangelies to belts, etc. before, and I usually use 2-3 strands of embroidery floss. It's surprisingly strong and durable, I've ripped apart and resewwen at least two banjara belts with it, and have had no problems what so ever.

Re: what to sew coins on with...
Tue, April 3, 2007 - 9:37 PMKathleen, this is brilliant! I have done tons of hand sewing in the past... but had never thought to use dental floss (in the first place), let alone colouring it with a Sharpie!
I just affixed a heavy coin-type drape onto a tribal belt yesterday and tried this method. Wowee-wowwow! Worked perfectly.
Thanks for the awesome tip.

Re: what to sew coins on with...
Sat, March 31, 2007 - 12:33 PMI've used carpet, upholstery, nylon and beading threads. They've all worked well for me. I tried fishing line and after a few minutes of struggle I abandoned it. Whatever you pick make certain you are able to work with it easily. Frustration and/or sore fingers will ruin the fun and maybe stop a project short of completion.
The key things for sewing on coins. Is the thread going to get torn or cut by the edge of the coin hole (test this with your thread and coins)? Will the coins move and dance freely? Will the thread tear the base fabric? Can you easily sew with the thread? Can you tie a knot quickly and solidly with the thread.
My favourite... beading thread. Synthetic, tough, soft, light, comes in 4-8 colours (depends on the supplier/store), easy to tie knots single-handed easy to thread on a needle, easy to sew with. -

Re: what to sew coins on with...
Sun, April 1, 2007 - 8:25 PManybody's thoughts on kevlar thread? I got some but I have only used it for some tassels and I have no idea how it would hold up with coins. (yes, the same kevlar as that of kevlar vests for projectile protection)

Re: what to sew coins on with...
Sun, April 1, 2007 - 9:23 PMOnce upon a time, dancers used to sew everything on with dental floss. Nowadays, beading thread is a good substitute.

Re: what to sew coins on with...
Tue, April 3, 2007 - 10:29 PMI use beading thread that is waxy, much like floss. I never use dental floss because some floss is now being designed to better bio-degrade in landfills and (I live in Japan) I have no clue what kanji indicates that, or if it is even mentioned on the packaging.
