Would you wear chainmaile jewelry or shimmy belts when performing? Chainmaile creation is a skill i have but i do not see many performers wearing it. I want to incorporate this type of jewelry into my costuming but i do not want to stick out like a sore thumb.

Re: Chainmaile jewelry
Sat, November 14, 2009 - 4:24 PMI think that would be an excellent idea. Anything that looks handmade, I feel, fits into the tribal bellydance aesthetic especially well. I would wear belts, bra covers, and potentially even jewelry if it were done well. I think the direction for jewelry would be to make them out of very small links and focal pieces that stand out more than the links do. But yeah -- if they were affordable, I'd totally wear some! And anyway, the idea for me when it comes to costuming is to dazzle the audience with the uniqueness of my outfit...chainmaile would be very unique indeed.

Sat, November 14, 2009 - 5:16 PMI have a chainmaile belt my boyfriend made me. I love it! I'll try and find a picture of it, its pretty simple, I added a bunch of coins to the loops and its really heavy. I've never seen anyone with one like it. -

Re: Chainmaile jewelry
Sat, November 14, 2009 - 5:32 PMI think it depends on what type of performing you are doing (and type of costuming). I agree...it would be cool for tribal-y costumes but would appear out-of-place for cabaret IMHO. Unless, the chainmaile can be "bling-ed"? :o) -

Re: Chainmaile jewelry
Sun, November 15, 2009 - 4:36 AMI'm a proud member of the Ringlord forum too. I have two belts and a chainmaille bra. Though the bra and one belt aren't really suited for bellydancing. The belt I have is suited, but doesn't look good yet.
Making chainmaille belts takes a looong time, that's why they cost quite a lot.

Sun, November 15, 2009 - 1:39 PMChainmaile can be used in cabaret styles as well. Check out the picture of Juliane on (I think!) Geroge Abdo's The Art of Belly Dancing. Her bedleh is chain mail and gorgeous!

Re: Chainmaile jewelry
Wed, November 18, 2009 - 6:12 AMI have several chainmaile / linked braclets of sterling Silver... and stone combos.. one just the links.. made by Robert Armbruster as he markets at Scarby and Middlefaire, Texas Renassance faires... I know he also makes them in Titanium... bracelets, anklets, necklaces... so finely woven it blows ones mind... and sturdy to wear...
I have some scalemaile dancer designs I am working on .. but haven't worn yet... the chainmaile wenches who wear chainemaile and nothing else at TRF are a bit of a design derail... don't want anyone to think i am even trying to imitate that look... i know I don't have the bare form to pull it off, te he he..

Re: Chainmaile jewelry
Wed, November 18, 2009 - 5:54 PMI usually wear a bit of both, actually. Being dimensionally-challenged, I use the very stury chainmaille belt as the base to tuck skirts & scarves into, or to hold said stuff in place. Then I usually layer some flashy jingles on top; an Indian wedding belt with a million bells, or a thin coin scarf tied so you can see the color & hear the coins. It works for me!
