food cravings. . .

sometimes i am ravaged by food cravings. . .usually i resist them, instead eating or drinking something more beneficial than that which i crave, but other times i just can't resist. . .

i think there is something important going on when we crave a certain food, more than simply that we desire the pleasure of eating the food. . .i think our tongues are actually a sophisticated chemical trigger and communicator. . .even though the food itself might be harmful, it seems that the tongue may have a purpose for it.

i am not sure how exactly i feel about this concept.

what do you think?

    My experience is that when I crave a lot of sweet things I am craving minerals..one of the things that can be dificult to get into our bodies. I try to keep seaweed and nuts nearby to fullfill my craving. I defintely trust my body to tell me what it needs. When I lived in Alaska I began craving bananas, having disliked them my whole life prior, I suspected that I needed the potassium while living in the artic, but hadn't really needed it prior. I still eat bananas, but don't really crave them anymore. I have found this over and over in my life, I crave meat at certain times of the month, while other times I really have not interest in it. I imagine when I need more iron. It is funny I actually walk but the freezer and get this desire to thaw out some venison. So those are some of my experiences. I trust others will have things to share as well.

    The only times i really get food cravings is when I haven't eaten for more than 24 hours. :)

    I stopped eating meat years ago my diet always has lots of fruit and vegetables every day. I also tend t o have nuts around for a snack. That has eliminated all food cravings. I suspect I am getting every mineral I need between those three groups.

      I wanted to add that I attended a talk a few years ago with herbalist Ryan Drum. It was titiled Herbs of Denial and Enablement. It was quite interesting and related to this topic. He was suggesting that if someone is over indulging in certain herbs or spices, they may be self medicating. They may either be compensating as I suggested above for lack of certain nutrients or they may be unconsiously treating a disease state. This talk was taped by Tree Farm Communications here is a link, if you are interested in purchasing. It was a fascinating talk. www.treefarmtapes.com/catalog...duct.asp

    America is a great example of allowing the body to choose what foods to eat and how much. Unbridled consumption of sensory manipulating treats. In modern society our natural functions for survival are not as useful when food is abundant and there is tons of research and science to back the health benefits of calorie restricted diets.I personally have proven to myself that my cravings can be manipulated in which ever way I desire if I continue long enough to develop the acquired pallet into a habit.

      I know, I have acquired a habit of enjoying bitter dandelions which are great for digestion. Took 30 days of eating 3 leaves a day to begin craving them. I do trust that if offered the proper things life leans toward health.

      I wonder if my lack of watching TV also limits my food cravings. I am not bombarded with food images.

        While on the juice fast I found watching TV was a terrible burden. Have you ever noticed how many commercials involve food? Lots!

          I also don't watch TV. In fact, I don't own a television. Those ads are a problem for most, and not just food ads...but too much of everything. One can easily select what they wish to read about news-wise via the computer simply enough.

          On food cravings, Linda and others are right. Mineral deficiency is often times the reason we crave sweets. In fact, the main reason many women crave chocolate during their monthly cycle is because they're losing a lot of magnesium, and chocolate is loaded with magnesium. Our minerals are a wonderful balancing act when they're able to interact with other enzymes and nutrients. My nutrition study is covering this area about food cravings now and it's fascinating. Select your foods per what is in season, and you should be all right. Select replacement foods to see if they'll address what you seem to be craving, and that should settle things down.

              Spanish Pipe Dream
              a song by John Prine

              "She was a level-headed dancer on the road to alcohol
              And I was just a soldier on my way to Montreal
              Well she pressed her self against me
              About the time the juke box broke
              Yeah, she gave me a peck on the back of the neck
              And these are the words she spoke"

              (Chorus)

              "...Blow up your t.v.; throw away your paper;
              Go to the country; build you a home.
              Plant a little garden; eat a lot of peaches;
              Try an find Jesus on your own"

              "...Well, I was young and hungry and about to leave that place
              When just as I was leavin’, well she looked me in the face
              I said "you must know the answer."
              "she said, "no but I’ll give it a try."
              And to this very day we’ve been livin’ our way
              And here is the reason why

              (Chorus)

              We blew up our t.v.. Threw away our paper;
              Went to the country. Built us a home.
              Had a lot of children. Fed ’em on peaches.
              They all found Jesus on their own"

        I hear ya! I haven't had a TV since 1985 and there isn't one day that I miss it, thank goodness! You've got a good point about the being bombarded by food images on the TV. No see, no want - LOL! When was the last time anyone saw an ad for a head of broccoli or a bag of oranges? But you will see a ton of ads for fast food, or these insane cooking shows that usually feature way too-rich food, unless it's a health-related show(not often).

    Ugh. TV and other forms of marketing are so very influential in planting the seed of desire. I do fine when I don't watch, listen, or read ads for garbage. I also don't walk down the center aisles in a grocery store unless there is something I need for sure down that aisle. I work some public events and find I'm heavily influenced by both smells and visuals there. I mean, what is it about an arena that makes me want nachos with cheese sauce and sliced jalapenos? Or what is it about a street fair that makes a funnel cake or kettle corn seem so irresistible? lol.
