Layla's Locks - all you can craft "buffet" (tentatively Sat. April 12)

Hey Guerrilla ladies (and gentlemen),

Its spring and I'm needing to get some energy cleared out of my hair/ crafting space, so an idea came to me - an all you can craft "buffet" featuring my vast collection of hair making supplies, beads, yarns, and fun fabric scraps, as well as too many little silk flowers to count just waiting to turn into your next great hairpiece or accessory.

I'm asking for a donation of at least $25 to cover the materials, but also included will be my famous hummus, wine, and other snacky goodness to fuel our crafting, and of course my expertise in making all sorts of fun accessories, as well as some advanced knowledge on how to make realistic loose hair pieces to add length, fullness or color (materials will not be provided due to cost). Its half workshop, half party!

There is also a very good chance of a Blood Moon viewing as well :)

So who is interested? If I have at least 5 willing to spend a day feasting on crafts, food and fun, I'll make it official!

What an amazing two-hour set of some of the luurvliest Mediterranean-influenced choonz served to us by DJ Layla who opened the Tribal Matrix DaKini party in the mainhall of Studio Nia.

The warm sonik vibez transported us as we danced from Al Andalus to the shores of the Levant and beyond, landing our dancing feet in the middle the 21st century urban global dancefloor as she dropped the Tigerstyle refix of M.I.A. at 22:30--what a way to start off the nite of nonstop dancing (8 hours) thru Sunday morning!

And to have the tribal-goddess-dj herself join us on the dancefloor during Jeet-K and Makyo's sets was just exquisite! Deep gratitude for gracing us with your presence, muzik, and dance, Layla ~*~

3/7/07 - Something Special: Global w/ Twilight Circus Dub Soundsystem, Etheric Double & DJ Layla

So there comes a time when you have to step back and appreciate what a great thing we have going for us here in Eugene. Back last November when I was originally approached by Jeff, Jeff and Stevan, owners of Taboo Nightclub, I went in there thinking what many of you might have originally thought of when you heard that this kind of night was going on at Taboo - you mean that hip hop/ top 40 college kid booze-fest? I'm not so sure... But after the last three months of constantly improving the inside space, renovating the interior to add cush new couches, an elevated deck, 4 plasma monitors and one giant projector for visuals, not to mention thousands of dollars in new lighting and effects, this place is really starting to take on the feel of a great nightclub. In my opinion it is really the largest and best venue of its kind in Eugene, and what's even better is that every wednesday we have the privilege of filling it with great music, people and vibes as part of our always special night!

Over the last three months, I've also seen our regular crew grow from at first a brave few friends, to new faces every week, usually remarking to me that they had no idea such a fun night was going on every week at Taboo! So far we've had the honor of hosting great DJs like Anjali and the Incredible Kid, of Andaz and Atlas fame in Portland, Haj I Ji from the Freek Factory in Brooklyn, NY, and GlobalRuckus of Gypsy Mania in Portland, as well as performers such as local favorites Luminessah Tribal Fusion Bellydance and Allure Hip Hop-Burlesque fusion. Well we are entering our third month of 2007 with a world class show with a Eugene price tag! What could be better?

Let's talk about Layla, and how you know her, how she has inspired you, and other layla randomness

Ok, so her and I connected on tribe almost 3 years ago. She invited me to spin at Shasta Gathering without ever having seen me DJ. She took a leap of faith on me. I took a leap of faith and made the 5 hour drive to an experience that has sparked some great artistic collaboration, the closest possible friendship and creative connection.

Layla's DJing inspires me. When I listen to her sets I feel beyond what I hear into what her soul is expressing. She takes DJing - and I recently learned this about her dance too - to a different realm of consciousness and makes itabout more than just the music playing. She molds an artform into almost everything she does. No ego, just the desire to love and share and give to a fault.

In the past couple of years I have had the amazing opportunity to spent time watching her blossom in many great directions, making hairfalls, sharing her music with the dance community in a way that just cannot be described and is understood only when experienced, promoting events and more.

I love watching her realize her potential and learn how to keep up with herself.

After its unfortunate postponement, Global Infusion is back in full force with a new intent and new energy both musical and educational. We are now raising funds and awareness about permaculture and sustainability to benefit Eugene's Dharmalaya (www.dharmalaya.org) center which is at risk of being closed due to zoning issues. We are starting the event in the afternoon with speakers, hosting a dinner and still bringing an amazing lineup of musicians and dancers for a sublime evening of entertainment and enlightenment!

This Christmas after the wrapping paper has cleared and the dinner eaten, consider heading out to this great event:

"Peace on Earth" Christmas Night...artful expression of peaceful intentions
As many of you know every year for too many I have been involved in hosting an annual Christmas Night event. This year I am choosing to change my perspective on things and hope that you will all choose to join me in this.

I feel, as I hope that we all should, that we live in a country that offers us too many blessings to think of. We may or may not feel in connection with our governement structure however it is undeniable that the opportunity just to live and breath in this country is of such a quality that it amazes me how we as a people seem to continually take this for granted.

Peace on Earth will be a night of chilled music with global specturm and loving intentions. There will be a photographic and art exhibit bringing to attention a few of the many conflicts that are taking place around the world. There have been those who have journied recently to these areas and whom have had a chance to witness first hand the people and places that have been so deeply harmed by this senseless situation.

We will be working with a few key organizations for this evening. Education and awareness are our main goals which is why this event will be 100% free. Use this night as a way to make a Peace an important part of your personal life progression. Create a new tradition.

Please join us for a special evening of unconditional earthly humantarian love. Peace should never just be a really great concept. It should be the seed of our souls and the beating of our hearts.

Hello All!

I'm very happy to announce that Global Infusion II is back on for Saturday February 3 and I am co-producing the event with Chris Richards from Origins music (www.originsmusic.com) who is adding a whole new element to the production. The show is now slated to take place at the Fenario Gallery downtown and will include speakers and events starting in the afternoon and benefiting the Dharmalaya center (www.dharmalaya.org) which is at risk of being closed due to zoning issues. Chris is now working on finalizing booking Dr. Israel for our show, as well as planning a dinner. The show will also be able to go a bit later at night, until 3 am, so our dancing feet are sure to get a workout!

My part of the show will be to plan and facilitate the evening show, which will be essentially the same program as Global Infusion II, minus the Bijou Project who have already told me that they will not be able to make it. But joining our lineup will be DJ Amar from Oakland, CA. Due to all the great musical talent we have, I am still going to keep the number of dance performers the same, but all tribal dancers are invited to perform as Guerrilla Tribal. I'm also working on rescheduling the workshop with Unmata for earlier that saturday.

Thanks so much for your interest in participating or helping with the show. I'll be requesting volunteer help with a variety of tasks as the date draws nearer and we are more clear on what help we will need.

DJ Layla December News

Wow! Its December already and I can't believe what a year its been for me! I've been all the way from San Diego, CA to Vancouver, BC, and already have plans to head inland to Boise, ID next year and who knows where else...

So in case some of you have not heard Global Infusion II with Unmata and Lady Ra has been POSTPONED. I am currently working with the artists involved to reschedule this great event for sometime in February or early March 2007. There are possibly great collaborations brewing for this event and I will be announcing more info on this soon!

But that aside, I do have a couple great events coming up in December, and a great new project to tell you all about!

The latest news!

My main project at the moment is an exciting new collaboration with Eugene DJ Moonvoid as Femme presents and Taboo nightclub on a great new Wednesday night - Something Special. Each wednesday will truly be a feast for the ears and eyes as we feature not only the best DJ's and electronic musicians, but also an array of talented performers ranging from bellydancers to fire spinners to neo-vaudeville cabaret.

December 20, a Winter Solstice themed party kicking off Something Special: Global will fill the club with a holiday feast for the ears and eyes. DJ Layla will host odd (1st and 3rd) wednesdays with the spicy sounds of world music blended with driving electronic beats. Special guest DJs for this evening will be DJ Anjali and The Incredible Kid, hosts of Atlas and Andaz two popular, long running world music nights in Portland, as well as Tribe of Eve Fire Theatre, an all-female fire troupe, and Guerrilla Tribal Dance, an alliance of tribal style bellydancers performing as one.

December 27 will kick off Something Special: Electro. Moonvoid will host female DJ talent from the northwest and beyond on even (2nd and 4th) wednesdays, playing the best in electronic music. This mid-holiday party will feature Allure Dance Troupe, the girls your mama warned you about, and Venus In F.I.R.S. fire performance troupe. On the decks, Moonvoid delivers a deep and sexy blend of ass movin' house and electro accompanied by special guest DJ's every week.

I'm so excited to be working on this ongoing event with Kasey and look forward to hosting many talented performers!

DJ/ performance opportunity - World Fusion Beat Wed in Eugene, OR

Hello all!

I thought I'd put this out there in a few different tribes to see what the interest is in this sort of a night. Recently I have been approached by the owners of the Taboo nightclub in Eugene, OR who are interested in having me program the Wednesday nights of their club. They have given me pretty free reign in what sort of music I would like to present and also to incorporate all sorts of different performers into the night, including fire performers and world fusion dancers.

I'm asking people in Eugene and the surrounding area (Portland, Roseburg, Bend, Ashland, and beyond?) if they would be interested in performing at, DJing at or attending a weekly wednesday night that featured world fusion music and dance performance.

Performers - I am open to all styles of world dance, and have a particular interest in Middle Eastern dance either in traditional or fusions such as tribal fusion or ATS style improv., but I would also love to work with Bhangra, African, Balinese or really whatever people would like to present that has a worldly flair.

DJs - If you are already a world music DJ, great, and if not, I'd still love to have you come and play a world-beat-inspired set. I really feel that the drive behind this night is to unite communities in recognizing that the way we groove isn't all that different no matter where in the world you come from.

If this sounds like something you'd like to attend, just give a shout out and a little encouragement. Hello again all!

Its been a busy fall and only looking to get hotter as the chill sets in. In october I had the extreme pleasure of playing at an incredible Diwali Party in Vancouver, BC hosted by my friends at Beats Without Borders. This November I'm on the road again to the Bay area to play with some of the most darkly talented dancers around, as well as soak and spin at Harbin Hot Springs with Amar. Over the holiday weekend, I'll be close to the family home in Portland for an evening at Pi-Rem and all the while spreading the word full force about the next Global Infusion on December 1st and 2nd.

I'll be sharing the decks with resident DJs Advent and Osiris Indriya. We will also have percussionist Pak Hanafi accompaning the electronic beats, and spiritual readings by Spokee... sure to be an exciting and eclectic evening for all! Tribe & Myspace stalker - watch out

Some of you may have seen this already, but just in case not ... our good friend Tim has posted this on tribe and myspace and I feel the need to make sure Everybody is aware, so Please pass this on where you can.

In addition, I read in some of the posts that he has been trying to teach ME drumming after 6 weeks of learning himself.
Seriously, be Careful and have NOTHING to do with this guy.

This is addressed mainly to my wonderful dancer friends here, but is useful for everyone.

Some of you may know that an individual has been haunting Tribe and the Bay Area belly dance scene for the last few months. He has approached and propositioned dozens of dancers both locally, and nationwide (online), upsetting many (including friends of mine), and even scaring a few with his stalker-like behavior.

He finds women's phone numbers, home addresses, emails, etc., and starts contacting them, often repeatedly.

There has been considerable discussion about him on Tribe, with many women coming forward with horror stories about his unwanted attention

Needless to say, do NOT accept a friend invite from this man, do not correspond with him at all.

Various dancers are looking into taking appropriate action, and the hope is that he will be gone from Myspace and Tribe soon. In the mean time, have nothing to do with him.

This kind of thing really makes my blood boil, and I felt it was necessary to put out a warning, since I have a large number of dancer friends. Please pass this on to everyone, even non-dancers!

New York?

So I'm going there next week...

Leaving on the solstice (the 21) and returning the 27th. Mostly going to visit my sister and get a cavity filled by her student dental self! Thank god for that too... the self employed dental care plan isn't working out too well!

I didn't try too hard to find a gig, mostly because its my first time in the big apple and I wanted to be free to experience whatever. Any suggestions for good bellydance or world music venues I should check out? Any other off the beaten path suggestions?

Right now, today and in the past 24 hours:

I actually got some sleep last night after opening a great party called Shiva's Temple III. Eugene parties kick so much ass! I had a good turn out of Guerrilla dancers and a couple new faces in the mix. I had so much fun doing a tag team DJ set with my sweetie, and dancing guerrilla style with my girls! The costume theme was ancient India and people were looking hot. I put together a red costume based on the root chakra and found myself really grounded with my shoes off and feet really feeling the floor a lot of the night. At 3am, I went home laid down until 8am woke me up and Jeff and I went to the afterparty where I soaked in a hot tub and had a great chat with a Cancer sister in the midst of her Saturn return, but about a year behind me...

Tonight I'll be finishing up a hair piece for Luna, another powerful sister who gave me a budget and free creative interpretation! I'm so excited about how its turning out! I can't wait to get it to her tomorrow!

So what do y'all have cookin'? Creative projects? Cool events? Dance perfromances?

My inquiring mind wants to know!
