Chemical lawn treatments

I rent my house and without my knowledge, my landlord had my lawn chemically sprayed. The company says it is not dangerous to the dogs, but I dont trust them, nor do I think 4-10 hours is enough time to keep them safe. Especially since it is sping and they are all about eating grass this time of year. Anyone have any expericence or knowledge in this area, the list of chemicals they used are: Nitrogen, iron, Trimec/Speed Zone, and Barricade. I have already lost my sweet malmute to cancer and I can not stand the thought of losing another pet. They are at day care today and they can stay the night there too, but if it is safe to bring them home, I would rather have them with me. I just want what is safest for my dogs.

Help, advice, anyone?

Overseas shipping.

Hi, there! It's looking like I'm moving to Italy. I have 2 kitties and a doggy to take with me. I will probably leave the kitties for a couple of months at a luxury kitty spa they've stayed at before, and take my doggy with me when I go. Wondering if anyone has experience shipping doggies or kitties overseas, and if you have any recommendations. Specifically, looking for crate rentals (if that's possible) or brands, comfort and practical items to include, extra security measures to ensure none of them break out, and companies besides passenger airlines that do critter shipping. Or, if passenger airlines are really the best option, then the names of ones to avoid or embrace.

Thanks so much!

Cheers,
SistaWeotch :)

This is from my friend...any ideas

Does anyone know how to cure hiccups in a pet? Bazil (my rabbit) has had hiccups for the last 2-3 days or more, and they seem to be getting more frequent (about 1 per second and constant). I'm sure they will eventually go away, but if anyone has any ideas....

Nike suspends Vick's contract...

I know you heard from me earlier today or yesterday, but I wanted you to be one of the first to know: Nike announced today that it has suspended Michael Vick's contract without pay and will stop selling all Vick-related products at its stores.

This is a big victory, one that simply would not have happened without your action and those of more than 165,000 others.

As you know, the allegations against Michael Vick are so serious and disturbing that The Humane Society of the United called on his corporate backers to end their commercial relationships with the star player. I’m so pleased that Nike has signaled it has a zero tolerance policy for athletes who may be involved with staged animal fights and other forms of malicious animal cruelty.

Nike's statement reads as follows:

“Nike has suspended Michael Vick’s contract without pay, and will not sell any more Michael Vick product at Nike owned retail at this time. As we’ve said before, Nike is concerned by the serious and highly disturbing allegations made against Michael Vick and we consider any cruelty to animals inhumane and abhorrent. However, we do believe that Michael Vick should be afforded the same due process as any citizen in the United States, therefore, we have not terminated our relationship.”

Also today, Reebok agreed to stop selling Michael Vick-branded products. The company does not have a contract with Vick but has an official relationship with the NFL to sell its merchandise.

Thank you again for all you do for animals.

Sincerely,

Wayne Pacelle
President & CEO

Wendy The Whippet

THE DAILY MAIL, LONDON

Meet the Incredible Hulk of Hounds

The hulky hound with double the muscle power

By REBECCA CAMBER

Maybe they should call her a whoppet - after all, she's a whopper of a whippet.

This is Wendy, the dog whose appearance is a long way from the usual long, lean and sleek look of her breed.

She was born with a genetic defect which has left her looking like the Incredible Hulk of Hounds.

While her head, heart, lungs and legs are the size of those of a normal whippet, her gene defect means she is "double muscled".

She weighs 4stone 4lb - twice as much as she should - and has bulging neck muscles, burly shoulders and haunches like a baboon. And unlike ordinary whippets known for their lithe and narrow frame, this four-year-old pedigree doesn't just have a sixpack stomach, she has a 24-pack.

Sadly, her mixed-up genes mean she may have a shorter life expectancy than most breeds.

But while she may look oddly menacing, her doting owner Ingrid Hansen claims the giant pooch likes nothing better than clambering up on to your lap to have her back scratched.

"People have referred to her as Arnold Schwarzenegger," she said.

"She's healthy and happy. That's all that counts.

"She doesn't know she's got a genetic defect. She might give you a nasty lick, that's all."

The whippet, who lives on a farm in Victoria, Canada, has been the subject of an American genetics study. Although the dogs are customarily bred for hunting, racing and showing, Wendy enjoys a slower pace of life.

She spends her days prowling around the fields, chasing other dogs and horses and sleeping on her owner's bed.

New DNA Kit Shows Breeds Found In Fido

May 21, 2007, 3:45 p.m. PDT

A new doggie DNA kit is designed for the owners of mixed-breed mutts and tells you the exact combination of breeds found in your dog.

Experts said the kit could also provide important insight into the medical needs of your pooch.

"Once you know what the breed makeup is, there are certain diseases that are more prevalent in those breeds. So, you'll be able to be on the lookout for those diseases and actually take steps to prevent them," said Dr. Marty Becker.

The test involves a simple blood test.

The test will be available next month.

I had to board my dogs and they came back with spirochetes (a parasite). Nothing the day care could have prevented, because you can not vacinate for it. They are better now, but now I have run into another promblem. They have been on a bland chicken and rice dinner and now wont go back to their kibble. Cooner, my bigger dog will eat it mixed with chicken and rice but the Lil' Bit wont even touch it. any ideas on how to get them back on regular food?

PETA killing animals?

Can anyone substantiate this?

http://www.nokillnow.com/PETAIngridNewkirkResign.htm

I did a Google search for "PETA killing" and got a fair number of listings, but I don't know if any of them are based on legitimate info: http://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&channel=s&hl=en&q=peta+killing&btnG=Google+Search

Please let me know if this is true. I'm sickened and horrified right now, tears in my eyes. The California bill 861 is bad enough ( http://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&channel=s&hl=en&q=california+sb+861&btnG=Google+Search ). Is this really going on, too?

I am going to go home and hug my doggy. :(

Blessings,
SistaWeotch

Some People should be on leashes!

Well The sherrif just stoped by the neighbors house to tell the owner that he shouldn't leave his dog chained up by the front door with no shelter, food or water (well he has plenty of water) It's been raining all night and still raining at 9:20 this morning! I watched the dog shivering, shaking the water off him and barking while he tryed to get into the house. So after 1/2 hour or so I was really pissed and I called the sherrif, and of course the idiot didn't answer the door (he works nights and sleeps during the day) So the sherrif wrote something on a card and left it in the crack of the door. And now I look over there and the dog is gone, so He finally got off his ass and took the dog in...bastard! What I would really like to do is walk over there and grab the guy by the neck and chain his ass out there all night!!! But since I have to live across the street from the jerk I have to take the high road. but If this continues I will just go over there and take the dog either home or to the dog shelter (which is a no kill shelter).......Sigh....what an ass...some people deserve to be on leashes themselves!

Dog Manners

I took my dog for a walk in our city dogpark this morning. This park is great cause you can let your dog off leash to run free anywhere in the park. It is gated so that exploring is confined to the area of the park.

I love watching dogs relate. I imagine it must be hard for a social animal to spend a so little time with others of its species. It is great to watch the social order ebb and flow as dogs arrive and join the pack.

This morning Rocky was king of the hill as a three year old with some stature. There were a bunch of younger dogs running around aimlessly, then he came along and started the game of chase. They all agreed that Rocky was the leader and he was in his glory.

Then after a while of this play, an older scottie came along and established that he was dominant and wanted all the others to go along. First thing he did was give Rocky a stern talking to (to which Rocky submitted) and all the other dogs (save one or two young ones) all agreed that the Scottie would be the leader.

The Scottie proposed a game of sniff-butt, which the gang agreed to for a while, then got bored with and started playing chase again. Rocky was again the leader and the Scottie was deposed.

Dog world....it is so much like ours......
