mystery

topic posted Mon, July 7, 2008 - 8:45 PM by  sulevay
so, today i received a curiosity in my mailbox - a manila envelope within which i found nothing but a copy of "nothing from nothing" a "novella for none" by N. Nosirrah (illustrations by a. nosirrah)

my name was spelled wrong, as was my city. it has no return address, except for the city of albrightsville, PA. i checked - it does exist.

it sez it was published by tragic circumstances publishing. it orginally sold for 1.95, but has 1- written on the inside leaf. someone's yard sale reject.

"if RD Laing's Politics of Experience and Robert Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land met in a bar and had a one-night stand, then N. Nosirrah's Nothing from Nothing would be their bastard child."

i can't decide if i should read it or just ebay it immediately.

I don't get it... why wouldn't you read it? Where did the quote come from?

LOL- sorry, karin. i was only kidding about that.

the quote came from the back cover. in fact, i've already started reading it, tho i haven't finished the other one and am reading another interesting book - about a neuroanatomist who had a stroke and her insider description of it - all sort of overlapping. makes for quite a stew in my brain....plus the heat these days isn't helping with my cognition.

steven describes n.nosirrah as 'the bain of my existence". that's a pretty enticing recommendation right there.

OK, I'll have to put Nosirrah on my book list. Lately, though, I've been holding back on getting new books, because they seem to be part of that otherness that I crave, something outside of me that will make things better. I've been taking a look at that attitude, and my way of thinking about my life: this idea that I somehow don't measure up, that someone like Steven, who writes these books, or anyone else, for that matter, has something that I lack, something that I need to get, so that I am always seeking, never finding.

BTW, I read Jill Bolte Taylor's book and enjoyed it. I highly recommend "The Brain that Changes Itself," by Norman Doidge, M.D. happened to pick up the book at a client's house. It's about brain plasticity, which Jill mentions in her book. Anyway, it will blow you away.

thanks for the recommendation. i'll see if the bookmobile has it. (doubt if you can find this Nos guy's books there, however!)

yeah, i think it's fair to say that no one has the answer to anyone else's riddle. assuming the riddle isn't simply manufactured by a restless brain to begin with!

we're like those babies who get thrown in water - we think we can't swim until we're thrown in.....even tho whatever's happening now is the deep end!

Like we're already in the water, swimming safely, and saying "I can't swim, I'm drowning, help me." So Steven or somebody else comes along and says "By the way, did you notice you're already swimming?" The title of his book, "Getting to Where You Are" reflects this absurdity. How could I get anywhere else?

Is Nosirrah Steven's old pseudonym? Is this why it is the 'bain of his existence'?

skeye - i wouldn't venture to guess why it's the bane of his existence. maybe nosirrah outsells steven harrison.
