I apologize, all. I suppose no one knows me, and that there even could be a thread on this. Either way, I'd like to take a short time to introduce myself. My name is John, and I'm a performer here in New York. I've been performing for many years, despite my age. I've recently been wanting to get in touch with Double Staves. I've done Single Staff and Contact Staff for a long while, but Doubles have caught my fancy. I am just curious what size would be ideal for my style of spinning? I realize that the style of spinning and length of the person proves as an influence to the size of the staff. Basically, I'm looking on a style that would focus on pirouette long arm twirls, antispins, isolations, and a whole 'lot'a room for movement and dance. The two sizes I have been debating having been 80cm and 100cm. I would really appreciate anything you guys can help me with. And by the way, I'm 5'8", if that helps. Thank you for your time, friends.

Re: What size for Double Staffing?
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 1:21 PMNot a serious double-sticker, but I sell tools to a lot of 'em.
Like poi, you have pretty much "long" and "short" where the long give bigger circles but you can do more with the short. Unlike poi, you can'r wrap a staff around you hand once, and get a shorter stick.
Long is any long stick that is more than twice the length from wrist to armpit (20" give or take, twice is just over a meter), and probably no longer than twice armpit height. Short is anything shorter than long (ie short enough to do inside tricks like baton spinning). Either way, you'll mostly be limited to what you can do with one-hand single stick with the length you choose.
In general, you'll get more show out of the shorter sticks and it will be much more divergent from the contact stuff, quite twitchy, more spastic and flashy. it's a little weird if you're 'the staff spinner' of the show and everything you do looks pretty much the same.

Mon, April 28, 2008 - 11:04 AMi use some 3 1/2 footers and it works nice...i wish they were 2 inches shorter though for inside moves. -

Re: What size for Double Staffing?
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 11:34 AMYeah, I made a set of 42's and didn't like them for the same reason. My personal favorites now are a pair of 3' sticks with torchballs 6" from the wick. Great for offset spinning.

Re: What size for Double Staffing?
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 12:58 PMI'm 5'9". I've been messing around with doubles for a while, but have not yet lit up yet (soon!). I've been using 42"/105 cm, which seems pretty good (maybe 2"/5 cm too long). I'm going after a slow-flow style myself. I've made an identical pair for a friend who's pretty good with doubles, and she's very happy with them.
I know a big guy who spins 31"/78 cm double staffs. His style is much more like baton-twirling. -

Re: What size for Double Staffing?
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 1:08 PMThanks, Adam. You've actually helped me out a lot. I'm going to buy the 100 cm. 80 cm would look too much like Baton Twirling. Thanks again, man. =)

Re: What size for Double Staffing?
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 6:19 PMToo complicate your options, you will also want to consider the weight of the staffs and how much wicking your use. Different weights will allow you do different moves less or more easily.
Example: Heavier staffs will allow you to do contact, acrobatic pole planting flips, and very slow spinning. Lighter staffs will make doing one handed double staff crosses easier and more quicker, and migrating to triple staffs more manageable.
I would recommend to explore different lengths and widths. You might find that a certain weight and length is just right for your style. -

Re: What size for Double Staffing?
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 7:31 AMGood point. Diameter is also important. While many single staffs are 1" in diameter (some fatter), I think that's too fat for doubles, unless you have very big hands. I'm using 3/4", which feels about right.

Re: What size for Double Staffing?
Sun, May 11, 2008 - 10:22 AMI would say that 3 footers give you the most inside plane action and they allow for a larger selection of antispin patterns without having to move the staff behind and in front of you. Also all your poi moves will carry over to the smaller 3 foot staffs. -

Re: What size for Double Staffing?
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 9:01 PMI have used doubles ranging from 4ft to 3ft and my personal favorite right now is 3ft 2inches. Really it comes down to personal preference. try 4ft and before wicking play around with them with tennis balls at each end and cut down until you reach a desired length.
