My name is John, and I'm a performer here in New York. I've been performing for many years, despite my age. I've recently been wanting to get in touch with Double Staves. I've done Single Staff and Contact Staff for a long while, but Doubles have caught my fancy. I am just curious what size would be ideal for my style of spinning? I realize that the style of spinning and length of the person proves as an influence to the size of the staff. Basically, I'm looking on a style that would focus on pirouette long arm twirls, antispins, isolations, and a whole 'lot'a room for movement and dance. The two sizes I have been debating having been 80cm and 100cm. I would really appreciate anything you guys can help me with. And by the way, I'm 5'8", if that helps. Thank you for your time, friends.
Short clip of a new technique, I like to call chopsticks. The other one could be called a horizontal chopstick or I was fishing with the idea of calling it center spinning. For those of you who want to try it out, a few pointers: Its all about the squeeze, and equal distribution of the force, your trying to make the staffs roll around eachother (if that isn’t obvious) . To make it not slide down your hand it just takes practice, and equivalent squeezing to do so.

The point? Opens up a whole new set of moves for quad/triple staffers. Not only could you have 2 in each hand, you could possibly be able to do it with 3 staffs in one hand (haven’t tried it though)

The other idea I’ve had as a result of this, would be having 2 staffs in hand making a cross, you would (with finger spinning, GASP) be able to rotate the cross all the way around (buzzsaw style) with one hand.

the beginning is cross arm (*c/a) moves, then the latter is spinning. Its more about techy/geeky than anything else, because all they really are is regular moves, with your arms crossed. Some good things come about, like 5 beat c/a weaves (not shown in video....i forgot about it, then was too lazy to go back and redo it...so you can hear about it now :)......shown is a c/a forward anti-spin in front wall plane, 3 beat c/a weave, c/a stalls, and my favorite (which isn't represented so well in the video) c/s btb weave. Crossing your arms, gives an illusion (when done right, viewing from the correct plane view) that you are breaking the barriers of your arm movement, and going in a full 360 either way.. i think it makes it a 5 beat behind the back weave, not sure though. also waist wrap hip spin in c/a.

you can either do it in the front wall plane by starting off in a cross where both staffs meet in the center +, then they both rotate 90 degrees at the same time, or they can be seperate starting a quarter beat behind each other (which seems possible)

or doing it in the side wall plane and doing one hand regular anti-spin, and the other doing box anti-spin

Inspired the Antti/Ima (A.I.) Staff Juggling Project, I think it's time for a Global Contact Staff Video!

Rules:
1) it's gotta be CONTACT!
2) you can use any number of staffs.
3) fire is okay, practise in daylight is better!
4) it's gotta be cool, new, funny, dancey or smoooooth. (Or just a kick ass combo.)
5) use your environment!

So maybe you can do an old-school move REALLLY well, film it, send it to me.
Or you have something nobody else can do, totally new, or just a small variation on something else that you haven't seen online before. Send it in.
Something funny... or dancey? Send it.
Some outrageously long contact combo? Send it!

Or just send all the stuff you want to show off to the world.

PM me for details where to send miniDV tapes, or DVD's of raw footage. If you wanna use the internet to send files, I can recommend large file uploaders, and zero compression on your movie.

If you don't have a video camera, beg, buy or borrow one.

If you have some kind of tiny handheld camera / mobile phone / photo camera that takes video, then fine... just make sure it can output raw movies to at least 320 by 240. And it must be in a brightly lit environment.

Deadline:

2 Months from now: 1st December.

Then it should be out for Christmas!

as a separate question.. ive been wondering how much wicking/thickness i should put on. Of course i want there to be enough, but i dont want these huge club like ends on such short staffs. I was thinking of even double wicking them (like.. 1 inch wick, 1 inch of space, 1 inch wick) thought it might make an interesting visual?

ok so maybe you guys can help me out here. i can't find what it is called (i know ive seen it in poi) when your doing a hybrid, but the second hand is following the wick. ill explain

ill be doing an isolation (i believe its long arm) with the both hands, then with my right hand i will start to go the opposite direction following the head of the inside wick of the iso, with the right hand will be doing the reverse anti-spin

also was doing the equivalent to a verticle r-type with a iso/other moves instead of having it in the middle , having it following the wick, in the middle of the other one. then you can go in and swich which one i the r-type, and directions and such

makes for some neat patterns indeed, any clue?

The location is Dockweiler State Beach. We are trying to get the northernmost pit. Note: There are two large parking lots that you can turn left into. Go to the north parking lot (or the parking lot furthest away from the entrance gate)

Or, you can opt to park on Vista Del Mar for free, in which case you will have to leave PROMPTLY at 10pm otherwise, there is a pretty good chance you will get a ticket.

Also, we could use help with firewood. There always seems to be enough due to the generosity of those who attend.

This is going to be a sober event. That means we would really appreciate it if you don’t bring drugs or alcohol. Also, please respect the event by not coming in high, drunk or stoned. Can’t wait to see you all there. Love and Light. --SBP

Hello. Last year Michael and I did a staff making session at my Burning Man camp. We had enough material for 18 staves and we had to turn away numerous people. So, I am planning on doing this again this year. So I can have a little more fun with it, I was hoping a few people might be interested in helping with pre construction off the playa and with teaching/assisting people during the session while they are making their staff (Michael and I had a line of people waiting to ask questions most of the day). Of course any/all material/monetary assistance would not be turned down (preference on the material- wick- 18 staff wicks costs a fair amount). Having experienced staffers there to teach some moves was nice to have and would be great to have happen again this year.

Looks like last year the session was on Tuesday from 1-3 (people were in my camp making their staff until 6pm). I think that is a great time to do it.
Here is last years post (explains the material I use and other info firestaff.tribe.net/thread/5...17aa18f06

Also, I would love to have a fire jam specifically aimed at the newbies who are just starting with firestaff (and other stuff too I guess- damn poi people!) Maybe on Weds night (give them a day to learn some moves)? Maybe have the newbies perform first/head of line privilege and then let other fire artists perform. Anyone interested in hosting this? We might be able to do it at my camp but I am not sure about our sound system and such. Comments? Let me know. Captain Salamander

I see two ways of making what i call in the poi world flowers.....

way one is more poish in the sense that you make your body a compass, and spin circles left hand above your head right hand at your feet, circle, and continue with each one clockwise going boom boom boom boom? is that correct? if so what sort of hand motions (and how do you do those hand motions) are used to make the circles with the staves (not the arms) (for those who don't know i picked it up in poi land that arm motion for flowers are like swimming :oD ) malaman does some of this around a minute 40 and then does it while isolating one at 2 minutes.......

But watching dual staff videos i've seen another pattern that while not being compound circle strikes a huge similatarity to what we call flowers as well. No idea what it's called, maybe it's what you guys call a flower..... in the malaman vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFbb_yFlyuU&mode=related&search=
he hits it up around a 1:23 to 1:27. our friend noelski also does a similar pattern in the combos video recently posted on the contact staff tribe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwLe-udvLgo it's near the end of the video, he has poi doing flower like patterns in one hand and doing what i'm talking about with the staff in the other hand.

ok, enough talk let me get back to work........
but i'd like to learn methods of rolling the poi around to do the flowers.......and some terminology from this so i can better convey images to you through words :oD

Here is an essay i posted on this tribe on another thread that i appreciate the same kind of feedback as i mentioned above

"when making tea first you have to boil water, this is meditation" <OSHO> when you complete any move once do it over and over until you "upload" that piece of consiousness as muscle memory on a cellular level. everyone has thier own spinning matrix that can be understood as a growing interconnected mandala. everytime you learn a move, it is like adding a dot (staff move) on your mandala. creating muscle memory (boiling water) is like transforming the "dot" into a clear open vessel. the energies begin to inter-flow through these vessels or micro-channels you have opened up (connecting the dots). mastery is a process of inutition>action>inertia. the intuition is tuning into the dot, channel, or staff move. everyone has this intuition whether you learn from a friend, video, or dream up the move "youself", it is you that is tuning in. and also nobody has an orginal or creative move, we are all pulling from an infinite information database that can be refered to as the akashic flower of life which is a recorded database of infinte possiblities. whenever you "come up with a new trick" you are actually just reading an astral page of this akashic book, if you learn from a friend, you are just reading a page that thier physical body read before yours. so for you egos sake, just remember that it is impossible for you to come up with something original. (all inuition and creativity is borrowed information from the akashic records) humbling huh? Action is intuition in motion, the act of putting energy into your new understanding. Inertia is the heat that generates through the action which can be seen as your flow. to taste the flavor of tea you must boil the water (heat generating intertia). this entire art form and every other art form is a process of becoming one with the flower of life. the FLOWER of life is a simple pattern that contains the code to infinity, and is the essence of the construction of this universe. as an artist you are a flow-er (one on the path of mastering and becoming one with the FLOWER). many of you have reached states of consiousness of oneness with the Flower in staffing or other artforms. some of you may have described this state of consiousness as "no mind" or "everything just happened effortlessly" or even "trancing in or out" when ever you are spinning a staff or poi you are creating and mimicing micro mandalic patterns of the flower of life. when mimicing the pattern, for that moment you are that pattern, you are one with that pattern, and in that moment the patterns secrets and codes are revealed to you. this can be describe as downloading secrets and codes to your subconsious, then uploading them to your consious awareness. i could go on and on, but whats the point since none of this information could possibly be my original thoughts, and you all probably know all of this anyway, and are getting bored right?

Parallel weaves. Forwards and reverse, 2 and three beat versions. Perhaps simian has some higher order weaves.

Parallel high/low turn. Turn to the other direction, or turn all the way around.

Parallel 'flowers'. Both staffs doing anti-spin on either side of your body, out of time. (on hand is up while the other is down etc.)

Parallel flowers with 2 beat anti-spin. Doing parallel high/low one hand starts to do a beat behind you, the other one does the behind the back beat when it gets to it's side of the body...

Butterfly:

Butterfly Same-Time Anti-Spin. Arms want to almost go through each other but don't.

Butterfly anti-spin one high one low: where you form a 'point' and pull it horizontally from one side to the other. Turns easily. You can also pull this point diagonally, or vertically.

Butterfly weaves - 1 beat weaves can be pulled around in circles and one staff will anti-spin, the other won't. Works with other weaves also.

Butterfly flowers with 2 beat anti-spin. Coming out of high/low, the two ends of the staff split apart and one goes behind you to do an extra beat, the other does it's own thing for a bit, before going behind you.

Things you can do with anti-spin:

* practise with the various different hand positions: the staff has two ends, you then have four 'ways' of doing each anti-spin pattern. thumb ends pointed toward each other, pinky ends, or the two versions of pinky and thumb pointed toward each other. Some patterns feel really different with pinky ends in I find, but aren't much harder. (harder only because I haven't practised as much with that end.)

* Then you can flick the ends by doing a quick half 'spin' (yeah a spin!) and be in the same pattern, but with the opposite ends pointing at each other.

* do a BTH beat / anti-spin instead of a normal one.

* find a nice place to transition to other forms of anti-spin, isolation or change direction into bfly anti-spin / iso.

* snaking up you hand and then doing anti-spin is occasionally fine, sometimes quite difficult.

* doing a quarter (or half) or anti-spin then isolation then anti-spin then isolation etc. You don't need to snake your wrist or go btb like normal anti-spin with this, so it has a lot of new possibilities. Putting a half spin of isolation into many anti-spin patterns makes for many many many new patterns.

* Do different shapes of anti-spin, triangle pentagon... etc...

* Do different timeings, quarter time for example. Quarter time weave, or whatever.

Interesting patterns people have already found:

* Switching ends is fun! Particularly in bfly high/low, switching the ends that make the 'point'. But you can also do it in parallel high/low. Probably in same-time anti-spin also.

* Most of these patterns can go BTH. But BTH has it's own set of rules, like it has to go BTH on the high side of the anti-spin, it can't go BTB and still do a one beat anti-spin. (Since your arm can go over your head.) This constrains some of the patterns you can do. Plus you have to sometimes 'set up' for a BTH anti-spin. (for reverse anti-spin at least.)

* I believe the french guys like doing parallel weaves with BTH beats. I've only practised this a little.

* Instead of having the isolated transition in parallel high low go from vertical to vertical, you can do it from horizontal to horizontal.

Things I just thought of:

* Switching just one end should take you into a different pattern. Maybe from same time to high/low...

* Doing BTH butterfly anti-spin with switching ends BTH.

* Doing anti-spin flowers and switching ends. That'd be fun.

* You can also do anti-spin flowers and go BTH.

bit rough...

Id like it if we could get a collective going on this, get everyones imput on all the tricks of the trade. I know everyone has there own way of doing things but heres a few tips to become better at double staff.

1. Get a big mirror and practice infront of it. One big thing is that, its not about what you see, but what the people infront of you see. Creating a focus poiint is essential. It will alow you to make alot better lines (trick to trick, not drugs.hhehe.)

2. Slow yourself down and learn every move the right way. Bad habits can haunt you. So take every one of your moves and do them as slow as you need to. Every trick has the potential for perfection, so find out the perfect way to do it, slowly and then add speed slowly. The fact is, that the faster you are going, the more potential for fucking up you have. the more your body is running around, even more potential for fucking up. So when learning a move, learn it the right way, slowly, then work yourself up.

3.Transitions are key. Know 2 or 3 ways to get out every move successfully. that way mid set, when you think of another move, you have 2 different ways to get to that move. (note:some moves, you just cant get to from one move to the other, so you'll need to have a median move.) Ive found 2 moves, that pretty much can go into any move, find that move for you! You'll find, that transitions can be just as exciting as the moves themselves, and add 10 points to your show.

4. Learn the sacred geometry of your body! Your body is perfect piece of math. The exact distance from your middle finger to your wrist is the exact number from the nose to your chin, or from your nose to you penial gland. the ratio of you elbow to your hand is the exact same ratio that all your bodys bones use, and so on. Which means, you have the potential to do a figure 8 in a million positions, perfectly around your body. Think about it, you can do a figure 8 in front of you, behind you, on both sides, vertically, horizontally, on top of your head, in between your legs (hehe ouch) and so on. So when you learn your sacred geometry, not only can you make up new moves easier, but you can know that if your are making two circles in front of you, and they cross at the center of your body, then they are in synch perfectly.

5. Combonation moves. I see alot of kids doing the same move for 20 + seconds all the time, which is fine! but it can be so much better. Find moves that flow together in a sequence (always change the sequence around though! dont ever do the same set twice!) and use that. You'll find that some moves go so perfectly into another, its almost a new move to do both in a row. Add a transition in there, and blam you go yourself a badass 20 seconds, instead of a boring 20 seconds. add another 10 points to your set.

6.Everything move you can do. LEARN IT BACKWARDS. you'll find yourself mastering every trick you can do, and also finding new ways to do it.

7. Practice practice and come to this tribe! Share, evaluate youself, and always be looking for a new way of doing things. Want to learn a new move? Ask! im sure we can teach you something. Getting yourself into a habit of doing things one way, is one dimensional. I try to pick up the staffs, 2 times a day. first time to warm up , second time to learn new things. it doesnt always work out that way, but i try.

i believe thats all i can think of so far. any can add there own opinions to this, and take it there own way. i'd love to hear everyone elses methods and tid bits!

I've been trying to beef up my cross spinning (using the doubles to make a cross) recently so that I can hopefully in a little bit of time move to more triple and quad staff.

But all I can do is pass them above my head and down low in front abd behind (barely)

Anyone gotta link to some good cross spinning videos that show some new technique
I think one was posted earlier but I missed it.

Sorry about low quality. You Tube is rather limiting. I uploaded a couple different versions, and they all looked pixely.
Good spinners though. It's a short clip show from my Bay Area trip.

Applying to this tribe, it's all doubles, largely dominated by weaves and isolations. But i've got a little bit of everything in there, some crosses and a brief atomic to look out for. And a bit of pretty sloppy contact.

Enjoy
