The Modern Pagan

The Modern Pagan
How to Live a Natural Lifestyle in the 21st Century
Brian Day

"Paganism means living in harmony with nature and respecting all that nature has to offer. It is a sustainable way of life that has existed in the British Isles for thousands of years and that has survived secretly among scattered households throughout the UK. Although it is not a religious path Paganism means living in harmony with nature and respecting all that nature has to offer. It is a sustainable way of life that has existed in the British Isles for thousands of years and that has survived secretly among scattered households throughout the UK. Although it is not a religious path (true pagans do not worship deities), paganism will appeal to anyone who cares about the environment, who is interested in maintaining an organic lifestyle or who believes in respecting their roots whilst catering for the future. Paganism may be thousands of years old, but it is particularly suited to meeting our twenty-first century concerns. In "The Modern Pagan", Brian Day explains how to live in a way that honours the land and its inhabitants. There is advice on celebrating seasonal festivals, on cultivating a true pagan garden, on creating delicious food and drink from hedgerow fare, on herbal medicine and on working for the benefit of all. The core principles of Modern Paganism will make sense to anyone who is tired of the hustle and bustle of our polluted lifestyles, and who is looking for a way to connect with their surroundings."

The Jung/Freud Approach

The Jung/Freud Approach

Dragon
(1) Is the dragon guarding a treasure, or a cave which might contain treasure?
If so, the cave probably represents your unconscious, the treasure represents yourself,
the dragon that stands between you and your true self represents the fearsomeness of the unconscious,
for one who is still afraid of what may be lurking there. This is a repression of the unconscious contents

(2) For Jung, the first stage of the individuation process is the conscious ego's heroic
struggle {the hero/heroine journey of mythology} to lift itself out of the orginal all-encompassing unconsciousness
and to establish control of unconscious forces.
This finds symbolic representation in the legendary dragon-slayer, St George (St George = the ego; the dragon = the unconscious).

(3) The dragon may represent the devouring aspect of (your relationship with) your mother.
'Slaying the dragon' may therefore mean putting an end to whatever in your attachment to
your mother is detrimental to the process of finding your own psychic individuality.
Once the individual has achieved liberation from the 'dragon',
the feminine side of the man's psyche and the masculine side of the woman's psyche will no longer appear in threatening form,
but as an indispensable companion and guide in further stages of self-development.

(4) A dragon may represent the generative power of (Mother) Nature; the unconscious,
felt as womb pregnant with new possibilities of life.

(5) A winged dragon may symbolize some kind of transcendence,
some passing from 'lower' to 'higher' level of personal maturity.

(6) A dragon may be a symbol for your sexuality, particularily if it - your sexuality - frightens you.
Is your fear irrationsal; or does sexuality threaten to rule your life? In either case, don't kill the 'dragon'; if necessary tame it.
(In China, 'chi' is good, life-giving energy and the channels it runs along are called 'dragon-lines',
which are said to follow underground water and underground magnetic fields).

The eyes of a dragon give insight into the fundamental structures of the world and possess an irresistible power of enchantment. Looking into the eyes of a dragon cannot be tolerated by the ego of a human being.
Therefore the human who nonetheless wants to try it must first overcome the death of the ego,
an indication of the inner alchemy.

http://www.mythsdreamssymbols.com/dsmonster.html
Dragons and Serpents
Basic meaning : Unconscious fears that are repressed and need to be acknowledged

Symbolism in Dreams

The Jung/Freud Approach

Dragon
(1) Is the dragon guarding a treasure, or a cave which might contain treasure? If so, the cave probably represents your unconscious, the treasure represents yourself, the dragon that stands between you and your true self represents the fearsomeness of the unconscious, for one who is still afraid of what may be lurking there. This is a repression of the unconscious contents

(2) For Jung, the first stage of the individuation process is the conscious ego's heroic struggle {the hero/heroine journey of mythology} to lift itself out of the orginal all-encompassing unconsciousness and to establish control of unconscious forces. This finds symbolic representation in the legendary dragon-slayer, St George (St George = the ego; the dragon = the unconscious).

(3) The dragon may represent the devouring aspect of (your relationship with) your mother. 'Slaying the dragon' may therefore mean putting an end to whatever in your attachment to your mother is detrimental to the process of finding your own psychic individuality. Once the individual has achieved liberation from the 'dragon', the feminine side of the man's psyche and the masculine side of the woman's psyche will no longer appear in threatening form, but as an indispensable companion and guide in further stages of self-development.

(4) A dragon may represent the generative power of (Mother) Nature; the unconscious, felt as womb pregnant with new possibilities of life.

(5) A winged dragon may symbolize some kind of transcendence, some passing from 'lower' to 'higher' level of personal maturity.

(6) A dragon may be a symbol for your sexuality, particularily if it - your sexuality - frightens you. Is your fear irrationsal; or does sexuality threaten to rule your life? In either case, don't kill the 'dragon'; if necessary tame it.
(In China, 'chi' is good, life-giving energy and the channels it runs along are called 'dragon-lines', which are said to follow underground water and underground magnetic fields).

Source: Eric Ackroyd
From Oxygen Dream Dictionary

dragon:
Animal instincts to be conquered, hence the battles of Saint George and Saint Michael with "the dragon." The dragon fight is related to the archetypal themes of search/quest, the hero/heroine, and, in more modern terms, separating ourselves from the collective values of our parents/ancestors. The dragon can symbolize a guardian or guarding quality; something that needs to be guarded/protected in your life/psyche. As a devouring creature, it may represent negative aspects of the mother archetype. It shares much of the same symbolism as the snake, and both can symbolize the developing Self<. In many cultures/legends, the dragon symbolizes wisdom and strength. Because of its hidden knowledge, the dragon often possesses supernatural/magical powers {myth}.
Pagan/Wiccan Interpretation of Dragon {Positive}

* A symbol of wisdom due to long lives and potent magick
* Dragon charms can bring power
* Visions or dreams of dragons can symbolize a person in power
* Dreaming of flying on the back of a dragon symbolizes the beginning of a new spiritual insight

Joseph's Dragon Dream in Revelations {Negative}

In Revelation 12, the major opponent of the church is also exposed. He is the terrifying red dragon with seven heads, ten horns and seven crowns on his head. Revelation clearly identifies the dragon or monster. He is "that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray" (12:9, with 20:2).

Satan's earthly proxy — the beast from the sea — also has seven heads and ten horns, and he is scarlet in color as well (13:1; 17:3). Satan's character is mirrored in his earthly representatives. The dragon personifies evil. Since ancient mythology had many references to dragons, John's audience would have understood that the dragon of Revelation 13 represented a cosmic enemy.

Exactly what the dragon's seven heads represent is not immediately clear. However, given John's use of seven as a numerical symbol of completeness, perhaps this suggests the universal nature of Satan's power and that he completely embodies within himself all evil. The dragon also has seven diadems or royal crowns on his heads. They could represent Satan's spurious claim against Christ. As the Lord of Lords, it is to Jesus that all crowns of authority belong. He is the one who will be crowned with many diadems (19:12, 16).

We are told the dragon had "swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to earth" (12:4). This fraction is used several times in Revelation. Perhaps we should interpret it as meaning a significant minority.
Dragon Traditions of Myth in East & West
From Dragonorama

Dragons have a deeply rooted connotation in Western culture associating them with evil, whereas in Eastern stories they can also be kind and are considered very wise
The Western Dragon Tradition

Western dragons aren't necessarily evil - but they often are. At the very least they tend to be solitary and bad-tempered.

The typical Western dragon - or Wyrm - is a large, scaly creature resembling a dinosaur or a large lizard. It usually has wings and can fly, often it will breathe fire.

Western dragons tend to live in caves in mountains or hidden away in the forests. They often guard a stash of gold. Western dragons are often used to symbolise greed.
Note: Caves symbolize the unconscious. In dreams a dragon in a cave would often symbolize unconscious fears, or a need to confront {and slay} unconscious fears.

Dragons vary as much as people do. Although many Western dragons are brutal, ignorant creatures who kill and eat humans others are ancient, wise creatures more akin to those found in the East.
The Oriental Dragon Tradition

Whereas Western dragons are usually found in mountains or forests, Oriental dragons are more likely to be found in the sea. Many oriental dragons resemble water snakes.

Oriental dragons rarely breath fire, instead if a mortal annoys one then it is likely to result in great floods.
Note: When confronting the unconscious there is often a reluctance by the conscious mind to accept what is there. Often the conscious ego will throw annoying barriers so one will continue to repress or ignore unconscious contents.

The traditional Western dragon is often seen as a brutish creature to be feared. Oriental dragons tended to be wise and benevolent - as long as they were given the respect they deserved. Their chief flaw was their vanity and if insulted could cause dreadful natural disasters.

Oriental dragons fly to and from heaven in clouds but do not usually have wings. Some sources say that they gain wings after living for a thousand years.
Famous Dragons, Serpents & Wryms

Abraxas

The dragon Abraxas originated in Persian mythology however the name has been taken up elsewhere. As such descriptions of Abraxas vary considerably.

Abraxas is usually described as having either a man or a serpent's body with the head of a cockerel (sometimes two such heads). He has two dragon's feet and carries a whip in his human hands.

The name and image of Abraxas were of importance in Gnosticism and other esoteric teachings. Some identified Abraxas with a supreme deity.

There is much numerological interest in the name Abraxas. The number of letters - seven - is considered important by some. There is also interest in the fact that the letters of the name can be made to sum to 365 in some systems. Abraxas is thus considered the Lord of the 365 Virtues, one of which represents each day of the year.

Some people have sugested that the name "Abraxas" could itself be derived from "Abracadaba".

The name is considered to have great power and is inscribed on stone talismans called Abraxas Stones.

Dragons and Dragon-killers

....

The power or energy of the lung-mei, or dragon current , has been represented visually by the image of the dragon. The dragon is a familiar image in China, and also figures prominently in one form or another in the legends of many cultures around the world. Frequently, these legends tell of the killing of the dragon, which is a vital part of a cycle of birth and death and the re-animation and fertilization of the earth.

Several local festivals of ancient origin in Britain continue to re-enact the killing of the dragon. Dragon-killers, often well-known members of local families, were celebrated. Some these dragon-killers, at an early date, were 'Christianised' and made into saints, the best known being St. Michael, St. George, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret. All over England there are hills and spots remembered locally where the dragon was killed. Dragon Hill, near Uffington, is one example where St. George, the patron saint of England, is believed to have killed the dragon, its spilled blood falling where grass has never since grown.

Raphael, St. George killing the Dragon, 1505

Places associated with the dragon legend are often also sites of ancient sanctity. And, because of this sanctity, many of them were 'Christianised', which sometimes included building a church on that spot. The site is often on top of a mound or flat-topped hill, and the church is usually dedicated either to St. Michael or to St. George.

Martin Schongauer (c. 1450-91), St. Michael killing the Dragon

Churches and chapels dedicated to St. Michael are often found on the summits of high points in the landscape. A line of such hill-top shrines dedicated to St. Michael, or to other dragon-killing saints, such as St. George and St. Margaret, runs across southern England from the north-east to St. Michael's Mount near Land's End in Cornwall.

red wing dragon

"The dragon is a complex and universal symbol. In the East, dragons are always seen as beneficial, positive forces holding strength, wisdom, supernatural power and knowledge and in the West, they are viewed as basically negative, destructive and of evil intent. Dragon is another connector of sky and earth planes. Dragons are sometimes seen as the darkness that heroes must conquer or as guardians of treasure or hidden knowledge. Struggling with the dragon can symbolize the struggle to gain consciousness and inner knowledge of self. Archaically, dragons were feminine symbols of power. Christianity, however, equated this old feminine power symbol into woman, serpent, sin and the Devil. The dragon is usually seen as a winged serpent; and as such it contains the combined aspects of spirit and matter (bird and serpent). The Chinese Taoist revered the dragon as the spirit of "the way," which brings eternal change and enlightenment. The wingless dragon is of the Earth, the winged dragon is of fire and air. White dragons are associated with the moon. Red dragon is equated with the Welsh God Dewi. "

The Brief History of Gaia

The Earth - Gaia - is about 4,6 billion years old. For an easier understanding,
let’s cut this time-span down to 46 years. The early years of Gaia's existence are clouded in the mists of history.
It wasn't until the age of 42 that the earth started to bloom.
After about 44 years, dinosaurs inhabited the planet. Some eight months ago the first mammals evolved,
and during this last week the first hominids entered the scene.
Modern man has existed for only about four hours; some sixty minutes ago he took up agriculture,
and a minute ago the industrial revolution began.
During these very last sixty seconds man has managed to turn Gaia into a garbage dump,
to exterminate thousands of plant and animal species, to kill an uncountable number of his own kind,
to loot the planet's resources, to pollute soil, air and water and to leave radiating waste for future generations.
Within the next few seconds, all of us will decide whether we are going to make life on Gaia impossible,
or develop a consciousness that allows us a future existence with Gaia.
Lovelock and Margulis named their theory for the earth goddess "Gaia", because Earth and its
atmosphere have the ability to regulate and sustain the necessary conditions for life.
It would be wrong, however,
to interpret these findings to mean that if we continue to go on as we have so far,
that Gaia - Spaceship Earth - would live on though,
without its human passengers.

How Neo-Pagan Authors Might Handle the Chicken Crossing the Road

Margot Adler: The recent chicken resurgence, it can be argued, is
directly based on a response to the suburban middle class experience.
While I found that chickens-who-cross-roads who responded to my survey
are of a wide range of ages and backgrounds, I discovered some trends
in the "why" of crossing the road. For some it is was freedom. For
some it is chickensim. Many chickens told me they crossed the road for
intellectual satisfaction. One thing is clear: the growth of road
crossing by chickens is expanding in the numbers of chickens and in
the ways they cross the road, including at chicken festivals and for
political blocking of roads.

P.E.I. Bonewits: Real crossing-the-road, we have seen, is a very
interwoven and complicated subject. Our conclusion could be that real
crossing-the-road is the build up of chicken emotion in conjunction
with chicken concepts to vary the modulation of chicken energy so as
to effect the modulation of the road's energy. That's all! Perhaps it
is unfortunate, though, to use the word "chicken" in relation to it,
since the "C" word is being used now in a way it was never used before
in the English language and is an utterly meaningless term without a
qualifying adjective. And this, of course, is the fault of the
medieval Christian Church, through the Gothic Chickens it invented and
used as the basis of persecuting men, women and chickens. The word
"chicken" itself comes from an Indo-European root, "cheeka/e" meaning
"one who lays eggs," and it has no relation to the later Anglo-Saxon
word for "wise spirit of flight," as so often stated by certain
contemporary "Chics." An'Chk'Rrhod ("Our Own Chickens on Our Own
Roads"), an authentic Neo-Chicken Rooster tradition, offers the best
of paleo-, meso- and neo- Chickenism.

Carlos Castenada 4/10/1964: I spent 14 hours, without food or water,
sitting on the dirt and under the sun in front of Don Juan's house,
grinding chicken feed. I asked Don Juan if I could have a drink of
water, and he told me that it was always this way, that a man who
wanted to cross the road with the chicken cannot have any food or
water till the chicken feed is ground. I asked Don Juan if the chicken
is an ally, like the little smoke. Don Juan seemed to get angry and
stayed silent. After I completed grinding the corn, I hallucinated
from heat exhaustion, and Don Juan said I was ready. As I collapsed to
my side, I spilled the chicken feed around me. A chicken appeared to
be eating the feed around me, and I became strangely absorbed in the
vision. I heard Don Juan's voice tell me, "You must let the chicken
cross the road into you. It is very painful, but for a man of
knowledge it is easy."

Scott Cunningham: A chicken passes between the grasses, clucking. The
wind blows, and the chicken knows, knows, that this is the time. She
puts her energy into taking the steps, in harmony with the gravel and
the stones of the road. She is across; it is over, and the chicken
stands in the field on the other side of the road. Natural chicken
crossing is unique among most other branches of the art of chicken
road crossing. It doesn't require years of collecting or fashioning
coops, feeders or hen houses. Indeed, the most important tools of
natural chicken crossing are free: the road, the chicken and you, your
personal chicken power. You're already familiar with it. You've felt
it. You are a chicken. Crossing the road is you, with your chicken
need. And, you can do it on your own. After all, who initiated the
first chicken?

Janet and Stewart Farrar: Since so many editions of Gardner's Chicken
Book of Crossings have appeared in print (some accurate, some not), we
think it won't "lay an egg" too much if we clearly present "The
Chicken Crossing Rite," especially if we do so after two and half
pages of well researched introduction set in six-point type. In
version A of the Chicken Crossing Rite, we find many pseudo-archaisms
(e.g.,"Yea, Ye Anciente Rite of Ye Chiks and Ye Rodes is a moste
powerful Crafting, taking thy athame..."); however, Doreen Valiente
notes (in version C, which is what we present), and we agree, that
underlying it all is a basic ritual for summoning the astral road
through the spirit of the Chicken (drawn down in the person of the
High Priestess, holding the black handled feed bin; of course, a
second degree may assist or perform the rite when.

Llewellyn's Practical Chicken Magick Series: To some people, the idea
that "chickens crossing the road" is practical comes as a surprise. It
shouldn't. The whole idea of Crossing the Road is practical for
chickens. While Crossing the Road is also, and properly so, concerned
with spiritual growth and psychological transformation --the "why" of
crossing the road-- every chicken's life must rest firmly on material
roads. Crossing the Road is the flowering of chicken potential. And
the profits from publishing all those books on how to do so? Well,
that ain't chicken feed.

Starhawk: The chicken crossed the road to reclaim the crossing
experience, the experience of being fully alive, with streams and
earth and rocks and road, in the fullness of her chickenhood after
thousands of years of roosterarchy. The chicken crossing the road
--not a chicken laying eggs, not a chicken being roasted and eaten-- a
chicken strong and free, crossing the road, this is something I can
believe in. We chickens, as chickens, can reclaim this in harmony with
the Earth who gives life to all chickens and Who has been terribly
scratched by roosters. Exercises: Dance the Spiral Chicken.

Doreen Valiente: Old Chicken really did exist, and she really did
cross the road. Gerald talked about her often, but she didn't cross
the road till before I began studying with Gerald. Still there are
records of Old Chicken which confirm her reality. As for all the
comments that Gerald had a "thing" for chickens, that is simply not
true. The reason we worked with chickens is really quite simple: it
worked!

Silver Raven Wolf: Although many times people have asked me why
exactly the chicken crossed the road, I often wonder myself. My point
is that every chicken comes to the road in a different way, and there
is no one correct way for the chicken to get to the road to be
crossed. The study of crossing the road is hard work if the chicken is
going to develop any degree of proficiency. It is not something where
you can just cluck yourself across the road. The first time my chicken
crossed the road was for my chicken's friend, whose rooster was being
abusive. The chicken worked the steps for crossing the road after
carefully considering all the reasons for crossing the road and all
the steps she would have to take. Finally, my chicken just started
clucking and flapping her wings and started across the road. When she
reached the other side, her friend's rooster was respectful!
Afterwards, the chicken ate some corn to ground herself.

The dragon's eyes are something very special. The eyes of a dragon give insight into the fundamental structures of the world and possess an irresistible power of enchantment. Looking into the eyes of a dragon cannot be tolerated by the ego of a human being. Therefore the human who nonetheless wants to try it must first overcome the death of the ego, an indication of the inner alchemy.

Shamanism, Bon and Za (g Z a)

The Bon and Za

One of the older deities of Bon is Za (gZa) who is manifesting himself in hailstorms, lightnings and energy. He has 18 faces and six arms - many deities of Tibet share this feature of multiface and multilimbs. He rides a dragon and he causes numbness, epilepsy and madness when he is offended by blockades of normal flows of energy. Za patronizes magicians and his thanka can be seen in many monasteries. The shamans of the Tamang in Nepal have the dragon as an important ally: with the dragon they can actually travel to the lower world and the upper worlds (akash). The dragon helps them to extract illness, too. Rätsch in his book "Schamanismus und Tantra in Nepal" shows a nice thangka on page 82 which illustrates profoundly the shamanic journey.

"Schamanismus und Tantra in Nepal" Great Book *****

Incan bones found in Østfold

http://www.aftenposten.no/english/local/article1856505.ece

Incan bones found in Østfold

Archeologists in Sarpsborg have found one thousand year old skeletal remains that appear to be Incan.

The skeletal remains were found during conservations work at St. Nicolas church in Sarpsborg, a city 73 kilometers (45 miles) southeast of Oslo, NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting) reports.

When archeologists were to move some rose bushes they made the surprising discovery of the remains of two older men and a baby.

"When we were about to take hold under the rose bush the skeletal remains slid out. It was quite surprising," Mona Beate Buckholm, archeologist at the Borgarsyssel Museum, told NRK.

One of the skulls had characteristics that indicate he was an Inca, the South American people centered in Peru.

"There is a bone in the neck that hasn't grown and this is an inherited characteristic only found among Inca Indians in Peru. This is sensational," Buckholm said.

The archeologists now plan to try and find out what the man was doing in Østfold, and how he came there.

Of course you can meet dragons in the Himalaya mountainrange, too. They have similar if not equal meaning to the people there as in China. Strawling through Tibet you can find dragons everywhere. Tibet and the Himalaya are both part of the region where the chinese dragon can be met. However in the southern ranges of the Himalaya the myths of the dragon and of the nagas of india are mixing. Both were being mixed in the tibetan mythologic carpet under the term Klu. All different religious schools and traditions of ancient Zhangzhung and later Tibet know dragons and included them in their corpus. One highly important scripture of the Bon is named the scripture of hundred thousand dragons (Klu). It is divided into three parts: the colorful dragons, the black dragons and the white dragons. The tibetan dragon is also named Druk ('brug), Drug or Zhug as variant spellings of the same. Bhutan, the kingdom at the southern border of the Himalaya is being called Druk Yul - the land of the peaceful dragon (or: the thunderdragon land). The population consists of the Drukpa. Bhutan is the souternmost region where the tibetan buddhist sect of the Drukpa Kagyudpa ('brug pa bka' brgyud pa) can be found. Naturally the temples of this sect are being called dragontemples.

The Drukpa Lineage is one of the eight minor Dagpo Kagyu Traditions (Dvags-po bKa-brgyud brgyud-chung brgyad) deriving from disciples of Pagmodrupa (Phag-mo gru-pa rDo-rje rgyal-po) The history of the name of this Lineage goes back to the first Gyalwang Drukpa Tsangpa Gyare. After his yidam,Chakrasamvara and guru Lingchen Repa (gLing Ras-pa Pad-ma rdo-rje) gave him the order to establish a second monastic seminary he went to the holy site, where he was up to build this gompa in 1206. As he arrived nine dragons roared up in the sky with a loud clap of thunder and white flowers rained down. To signify this auspicious sign he named the monastery drukpa gompa and the Lineage was also named after this incident: drukpa - The Line of the Dragon. The previously unknown site became known under the name Namdruk Sewa Jangchub Ling genannt: where the Dragons flew up the sky. During the lifetime of the fourth Gyalwang Drukpa Kunkhyen Pema Karpo the main seat of the Drukpa Lineage was moved to Druk Sangag Choeling (gSang-sngags chos-gling dGon-pa) in the Jar Province of Tibet. After the invasion of the PRC Namdruk was totally destroyed. Today only a few monks are living there under difficult circumstances. Today the Drukpa Lineage is very active in the Internet, too. You can visit them at the Gyalwang Drukpa - authorized by the twelfth Gyalwang Drukpa.

Archaeological evidences date the dragon in the himalayan regions back at least to the Tang Dynasty in China. Li Yuanding travelled during the reign of the Tang to the ancient kingdom in Himalaya and wrote and account that he saw dragon images in the tent of the king. The stone plates at the grave of Chido Songtsan shows dragons, too. Also in the old kingdom of Guge there can be found dragon images. In Lhasa, a city in the territory of ancient Zhangzhung is the monastery Jo'khang or Tsuglagk'ang where the image of Shakyamuni Buddha can be found. In front of it there are two pillars with dragons. During the Tang Tibet came in touch with the chinese feng shui and some traces of it can still be found. So at Lhasa there is the green dragon in the South. Within the Gesa Epos the dragon is also located in the South. Of course you can find dragons in this heroic epos. They symbolize heroic attributes like nobility, strength, fortitude. "In the blue sky there is a jade dragon. He lives in Purple Cloud City. He roars to show his might, and he throws a thunderbolt like an arrowhead. In one blow he destroys the eagle's nest, and in another he smashes the Red Rock Peak." reads one line from it. It reminds on the heavenly palace of chinese dragons.

Some samples of draconic geography in the Himalaya: In the province Sichuan a river has its fountain within a mountain cave, whethin it there are two white stones which look like two white dragons. This river is being called Zhugqu - Dragonriver in Gansu. The chinese name of it is bailong which is White Dragon (River) in english. In the county Lintan of the same province there are two lakes named after dragons: the Ama Zhugco - lake of the mother dragon and Zhugmoco - the dragon's daughters lake. At these locations there still are rituals being held to honor Zhug which is a female one there.

You can find Druk in one corner of tibetan Prayer Flags to represent the element wood along with the horse (in the middle), the snow lion, the tiger and the khyung (Garuda). In tibetan these flags are named rLung rta - translated wind-horse or simply luck. Raising them on auspicious days increase the rLung rta of the person. The term rLung however is obviously akin to the chinese lung which translates as dragon among other meanings. Another very important meaning of this word is vital-force.

Druks are living in the clouds and were later associated with gZa. The Druk is different to the Nagas of India and is being called for protection against enemies. It always has five claws. The crocodile is much more brought into play when the Druks are being displayed. Although there still is being a clear difference between the crocodile and the dragon. The Druk is the vehicle of some protective deities and Guardians of the Teachings in Tibet. The first of the Thang-yig (or brtan ma bcu gnyis: Tenma Chu-nyi) Dhag-nyi Chenmo Dorje Kundragma (bdag nyid chen mo rdo rje kun grags ma) for example. She was born in Tsangtoe (gtsang stod) and it is said that she would reside in Gungthang, Namtso (gnam mtsho), Chugma (phyug mo) and so on. She is of dark blue complexion and holds in her right hand a crocodile banner (chu srin gyi rgyal mtshan) and a small mirror (me long). Another female guardian deity of the scriptures and teachings of the kagyu is Tekar Drosangma (gtad dkar ´theng po). Among other things she gives material wealth. The Guardian Deity of the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Rinpoche is dPal ldan lha mo. She is one of the most powerful Guardians of Tibet and she notes the sins of mankind on wood. She is accompanied by some horrible goddesses which ride on a khyung and a dragon.

Another kind of tibetan spirits are the Klu which are more feared then the Druk. The myths of the Klu have mixed with the cult of the Naga in India and it is quite difficult to sort them out. The Klu are the tibetan version of the chinese water dragons and they live in fountains, rivers and seas. You can encounter them on certain special locations, too. The Klu hetched from six eggs at the dawn of creation. The king of them - Klu chen rgyal po - lives in an under water palace just like the dragonkings in china. It is to be noticed that he is being called in the more darker kind of rites to end up the lifes of the enemies quick. The female form of the Klu is Klu mo and the queen is named Yum klu mo yak. She is not one of the nice and peaceful breed and her garment are snakes. When she rides out she has a bag full of diseases with her. Another much more friendly Klu mo wears a garment of cloudy silk and feathers and she patronizes jung girls and women. The legendary kings of ancient Tibet before To ri long bstan had daughters of the gods and the Klu as wives. So the wive of king Gesar is named Sengjam Zhugmo, the daughter of the dragon. It is said that she was born in the thunder of a dragon. Today many women in Tibet bear the name Zhugmo. To angry one Klu can have the consequences of really bad weathers like hailstorms. Klu are regularly held responsible for illness and disease. There are certain rites to react on these more sinister deeds of them and the famous crosses of ropes play an importand part in these rites.

Korean Dragons with long beards ...

Korean dragons

Whereas most dragons in Western mythology are generally related to the elements of fire and destruction, dragons in Korean mythology are mostly viewed as benevolent beings related to water and agriculture, often considered bringers of rain and clouds. Hence, many Korean dragons are said to have resided in rivers, lakes, oceans or even deep ponds within mountains.

The symbol of the dragon has been used extensively, both in Korean mythology and ancient Korean art. Politically, the dragon represents the Emperor, who himself was associated with rain and agriculture. Hence, those who used the title of King (Wang) were forbidden from wearing dragon adornments; the Fenghuang is the creature traditionally associated with a king.

Ancient texts sometimes mention sentient speaking dragons, capable of understanding such complex emotions such as devotion, kindness, and gratitude. One particular Korean legend speaks of the great King Munmu, who on his deathbed wished to become a "Dragon of the East Sea in order to protect Korea."

The Korean dragon was said to have certain specific traits: no wings, for example, in addition to a long beard.

Very occasionally a dragon may be depicted as carrying a dragon orb known as the Yeo-ui-ju (여의주) in one or more of its claws. It was said that whoever could wield the Yeo-ui-ju was blessed with the abilities of omnipotence and creation at will, and that only four-toed dragons (those which had thumbs to hold the orbs) were both wise and powerful enough to wield these orbs (as opposed to the lesser, three-toed dragons).

As with Chinese dragons, the number nine is significant with Korean dragons and they are said to have 81 (9x9) scales on their backs.

Dragons and the Tuva Shamanism

In the shamanism of Tuva there is a sky ritual that is performed by shamans on mountain peaks in the spring. The ritual addresses how the connection between sky and earth comes about. The dragon can tread the connection lines between the (black) sky and the earth, and it works together with the shaman. The ritual may be carried out only by old, experienced shamans: only male shamans who have completed their 61st year and female shamans who have completed their 49th year are considered strong enough to perform this ritual. The dragon has a large tail, and if it is happy it wags its tail and the planets and stars come into being. If it is in a bad mood it shrieks loudly and there is thunder. If disturbances arise in the flow of communication between sky and earth, the dragon strikes the troublemaker with lightning and kills him. The spirit of the sky placed nine balls into the mouth of the dragon so that it wouldn't roar too loudly. In the winter the dragon sleeps until it awakens again in the spring. Serpents are very important helping spirits for the shaman in Tuvan shamanism, and they are therefore displayed on the headdress and the shamanic costume.

Quetzalcoatl (could easy be a combination of dragon and eagle)

Quetzalcoatl
by Micha F. Lindemans
"Feathered Snake". One of the major deities of the Aztec, Toltecs, and other Middle American peoples. He is the creator sky-god and wise legislator. He organized the original cosmos and participated in the creation and destruction of various world periods. Quetzalcoatl ruled the fifth world cycle and created the humans of that cycle. The story goes that he descended to Mictlan, the underworld, and gathered the bones of the human beings of the previous epochs. Upon his return, he sprinkled his own blood upon these bones and fashioned thus the humans of the new era. He is also a god of the wind (the wind-god Ehecatl is one of his forms), as well as a water-god and fertility-god.
He is regarded as a son of the virgin goddess Coatlicue and as the twin brother of Xolotl. As the bringer of culture he introduced agriculture (maize) and the calendar and is the patron of the arts and the crafts.

In one myth the god allowed himself to be seduced by Tezcatlipoca, but threw himself on a funeral pyre out of remorse. After his death his heart became the morning-star, and is as such identified with the god Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli. In dualistic Toltec religion, the opposing deity, Tezcatlipoca ("Smoking Mirror"), a god of the night, had reputedly driven Quetzalcoatl into exile. According to yet another tradition he left on a raft of snakes over the sea. In any case, Quetzalcoatl, described as light-skinned and bearded, would return in a certain year. Thus, when the Spanish conqueror Hernán Cortés appeared in 1519, the Aztec king, Montezuma II, was easily convinced that Cortés was in fact the returning god.

The Aztec later made him a symbol of death and resurrection and a patron of priests. The higher priests were called Quetzalcoatl too. The god has a great affinity with the priest-king Topiltzin Ce Acatl Quetzalcoatl, who ruled the Toltecs in Tula in the 10th century. The cult of Quetzalcoatl was widespread in Teotihuacan (ca. 50km northeast of Mexico City), Tula (or Tullán, capitol of the Toltecs in middle Mexico), Xochilco, Cholula, Tenochtitlan (the current Mexico City), and Chichen Itza.

'The Dragon' is an ancient name for the energies of the Earth, and ley-lines are sometimes also called 'Dragon lines'. In the mythology of Europe Dragons are closely related to serpents, which have always represented the dark, hidden power of the Earth.

Dragon Tree Rune

The Dragon Tree Rune is multi-functional eco-magic tool - a kind of magical Swiss Army knife. It’s been used as an amulet, scrawled on walls and bulldozers, face painted, and drawn onto letters, leaflets and envelopes. In addition, chalk stones marked & charged with this runebind are buried all over Gt. Britain & Ireland.

The Dragon Tree Rune

The rune is used in all kinds of magical work and campaigning. Typically, it has been used like a battery, being 'charged' in ritual or meditation, and 'discharged' in campaigning.

It originated as an ancient Norse runebind representing the World Tree, linking the earth with upper and lower worlds. The eco-pagan Dragon Network adopted it and it has become widely known as the 'Dragon Rune'. The runebind is a combination of six runes (Laguz, Fehu, Tiwaz, Kenaz (Kaunaz), Elhaz (Algiz) and Isa) and has been used at many successful protest actions over the past 10 years. It brings strength, deepens intuition, sharpens focus and inspires solutions to problems.

the universe is a green dragon

the universe is a green dragon

In this excerpt from his book, The Universe Is A Green Dragon, Brian Swimme, physicist and associate director of The Institute in Culture and Creation Spirituality, provides a wonderful example of the blending of fact and meaning in the context of the cosmic story.

WHAT I PRESENT in my book is the overall picture of the cosmic creation story, told in a single evening's conversation. This article gives excerpts from that conversation, particularly from the first half.

I call the two speakers THOMAS and YOUTH. By THOMAS I want to honor Thomas Berry and the cosmological tradition he celebrates, stretching back from Erich Jantsch and Teilhard de Chardin through Thomas Aquinas to Plato. The idea to present the new creation story in the form of a conversation originated at the Broadway Diner in New York City. I was working my way through a Greek salad, when Thomas Berry suddenly said: "You scientists have this stupendous story of the universe. It breaks outside all previous cosmologies. But so long as you persist in understanding it solely from a quantitative mode you fail to appreciate its significance. You fail to hear its music. That's what the spiritual traditions can provide. Tell the story, but tell it with a feel for its music."

I call the other human YOUTH to remind us that the human species is the youngest, freshest, most immature, newest species of all the advanced life forms in the planet. We have only just arrived. If we can remain resilient, if we can continue our questioning, our developing, our hoping, if we can live in awe and in the depths of wonder, we will continue moving into the only process that now matters - our authentic maturation as a species. It is in this way and only this way that we will enable the Earth to bloom once again.

CREATIVITY: PRIMORDIAL AND PERVASIVE

YOUTH: Why do you say the universe is a green dragon?

THOMAS: I'm a storyteller. Besides, it seems an appropriate way to begin the new story of the cosmos.

YOUTH: But why say it's a green dragon when it obviously isn't?

THOMAS: I call the universe a green dragon because I want to avoid lulling you into thinking we can have the universe in our grasp, like a stray dog shut up in its kennel. I want to remind us of this proper relationship as we approach the Whole of Things.

On the other hand - and here is a second reason for the green dragon - we have learned things in our scientific explorations that completely transform our understanding of the universe. Our revolution in thinking dwarfs Copernicus's announcement that the Earth travels around the Sun. It is outrageous to compare the universe to a green dragon, I know, but I hope this will express some of my astonishment at what we now know about the universe. The inadequacy of the dragon image is that green dragons are much too commonplace to indicate the radical nature of what we have learned. That's how limited our language is.

YOUTH: Where should we start?

THOMAS: At the beginning. We need to start with the story of the universe as a whole. Our emergent cosmos is the fundamental context for all discussions of value, meaning, purpose, or ultimacy of any sort. To speak of the universe's origin is to bring to mind the great fire at the beginning of time.

Imagine that furnace out of which everything came forth. This was a fire that filled the universe - that was the universe. There was no place in the universe free from it. Every point of the cosmos was a point of this explosion of light. And all the particles of the universe churned in extremes of heat and pressure, all that we see about us, all that now exists was there at the beginning, in that great burning explosion of light.

YOUTH: How do we know about it?

THOMAS: We can see it! We can see the light from the primeval fireball. Or at least the light from its edge, for it burned for nearly a million years. We can see the dawn of the universe because the light from its edge reaches us only now, after traveling fifteen billion years to get here.

YOUTH: So we're in direct contact with the origin of the universe?

THOMAS: That's right.

YOUTH: I can't believe I didn't know this.

THOMAS: Scientists have only just learned to see the fireball. The light has always been there, but the ability to respond to it required a tremendous development of the human senses. Just as an artist learns to see a lakeshore's subtle shades and contours, the human race learns to develop its sensitivities to what is present. It took millions of years to develop, but humans can now interact with the cosmic radiation from the origin of the universe. We can now see the beginnings of time - a stupendous achievement.

YOUTH: It's amazing.

THOMAS: Most amazing is this realization that everything that exists in the universe came from a common origin. The material of your body and the material of my body are intrinsically related because they emerged from and are caught up in a single energetic event. Our ancestry stretches back through the life forms and into the stars, back to the beginnings of the primeval fireball. This universe is a single multiform energetic unfolding of matter, mind, intelligence, and life. And all of this is new. None of the great figures of human history were aware of this. Not Plato, or Aristotle, or the Hebrew Prophets, or Confucius, or Thomas Aquinas, or Leibniz, or Newton, or any other world-maker. We are the first generation to live with an empirical view of the origin of the universe. We are the first humans to look into the night sky and see the birth of stars, the birth of galaxies, the birth of the cosmos as a whole. Our future as a species will be forged within this new story of the world.

YOUTH: But what about my future? What difference will it make for me?

THOMAS: To begin with, you will have to embrace your creative potential. The universe has unfolded to this point. It has poured into you the creative powers necessary for its further development. The journey of the cosmos depends on those creatures and elements existing now, you among them. For the unfolding of the universe, your creativity is as essential as the creativity inherent in the fireball.

YOUTH: How can this be so? What do humans add that is actually new?

THOMAS: The human provides the space in which the universe feels its stupendous beauty. The universe shivers with wonder in the depths of the human. Do you see? Think of what it would be like if there were no humans on the planet: the mountains and the primeval fireball would be magnificent, but the Earth would not feel any of this. Can you see the sadness of such a state? The incompleteness?

I sometimes think the primary deed of a parent is to see the beauty and grace of children. Children are magnificent, gorgeous beyond telling. They themselves have no idea of what beauty they embody. Can you see the tragedy of a child with no one to feel and cherish its beauty? No one to fall in love with this magnificent creature? No one to celebrate its splendor?

The cosmos is the same: humans can house the tremendous beauty of Earth, of life, of the universe. We can value it, feel its grandeur.

YOUTH: But what can I do? How am I supposed to help out?

THOMAS: Don't get impatient. You have to learn first. Just moments ago the presence of the universe's origin was unknown to you. Be patient, for there is certainly specific work waiting for you. Or did you think the universe went to fifteen billion years of work to create you if there was not a particular function that you - and only you - could do? The creative powers residing in you will be evoked in time for the work they were created for.

YOUTH: What creative powers?

THOMAS: We can not say until they show themselves. Not even you could know yet.

YOUTH: But where do they come from then, if even I don't know what they are?

THOMAS: From the same place that everything comes from. From the same place out of which the primeval fireball comes: an empty realm, a mysterious order of reality, a no-thing-ness that is simultaneously the ultimate source of all things.

YOUTH: Now wait a minute -

THOMAS: I realize how strange it sounds. But there is little we can do about that. I'm speaking here of something that has recently been encountered empirically. In the language of physics, we call it quantum fluctuation. Elementary particles fluctuate in and out of existence. What a strange realization! Don't think that physicists have any easier time of it than you! Elementary particles leap into existence, then disappear. A proton emerges suddenly - where did it come from? Who made it? How did it sneak into reality all of a sudden?

We say it simply leapt out of no-thing-ness. There was no particle, then there was. I am not speaking here of the manner in which mass and energy can be transformed into one another. I am speaking of something much more mysterious. I am saying that particles boil into existence out of sheer emptiness. That is simply the way the universe works. We have to get used to it. We didn't construct it; we just find ourselves here. If elementary particles are going to come leaping out of mysterious realms, then that's the way it is.

I say no-thing-ness. Or emptiness. But this only reveals the limits of language. We are here approaching an Ultimate Mystery, something that defeats our attempts to probe and investigate. There was no fireball, then the fireball erupted. The universe erupted, all that has existence erupted out of nothing, all of being erupted into shining existence.

While this perspective is new within the traditions of science, from another point of view we are arriving at an understanding that was deeply appreciated during the classical religious period of humanity. Thomas Aquinas and Meister Eckhart in the Middle Ages of Europe grasped intuitively that emptiness is the source of everything. This realization is echoed in the life and teaching of Buddha, who understood that all put-together things arise from emptiness and exist inseparably with emptiness.

YOUTH: Do physics and Christianity and Buddhism say the same thing?

THOMAS: Nothing that simplistic can be said. The situation is this. The creation story unfurling within the scientific enterprise provides the fundamental context, the fundamental arena for meaning, for all the peoples of the Earth. For the first time in history, we can agree on the basic story of the galaxies, the stars, the planets, minerals, life forms, and human cultures. This story does not diminish the spiritual traditions of the classical or tribal periods of human history. Rather, the story provides the proper setting for the teaching of all traditions, showing the true magnitude of their central truths.

We have a vast new empirically grounded story of the universe, one that explodes beyond any previous telling of reality, one that encompasses all peoples because it is rooted in concrete experience. Within this emerging story, each tradition will flower beyond telling in fruitful interaction with the rest, and together we can continue our journey to our fullest destiny.

YOUTH: What is our fullest destiny?

THOMAS: To become love in human form.

YOUTH: Love? I thought we were talking about science and religion. And emptiness.

THOMAS: Yes, that's right. The journey out of emptiness is the creation of love.

YOUTH: I'm confused.

THOMAS: By what exactly?

YOUTH: Well, by love. What do you mean by love?

ALLUREMENT

THOMAS: In order to approach love, we must start with our common context, the emerging universe in which we find ourselves. If we want to learn anything, we must start with the cosmos, the Earth, and life forms.

Love begins as allurement - as attraction. Think of the entire cosmos, all one hundred billion galaxies rushing through space: At this cosmic scale, the basic dynamism of the universe is the attraction each galaxy has for every other galaxy.

YOUTH: But isn't that gravity?

THOMAS: Gravity is the word we use to point to this primary attraction, but no matter how intelligently we theorize about the consequences of this attraction, the actual attracting activity remains a mystery.

YOUTH: Are you saying that this attraction is love?

THOMAS: I'm certainly not saying that gravity is human love, but what I am saying is that when we look at love from a cosmic perspective, we see attraction operating at every level. And everywhere, this attraction is as mysterious, as basic, as the allurement that we call gravitation.

YOUTH: So what you are saying is, a galaxy exists within attraction and so do I.

THOMAS: The great mystery is that we are interested in, attracted to, anything whatsoever. Love begins there. To become fascinated, to feel allurement, is to step into a wild love affair on any level of life.

Then we discover not only that we are interested, but that our interests are entirely our own. We awake to our own unique set of attractions. So do oxygen atoms. So do protons. The proton is attracted only to certain particles. On an infinitely more complex level, the same holds true for humans: Each person discovers a field of allurements, the totality of which bears the unique stamp of that person's personality. Destiny unfolds in the pursuit of individual fascinations and interests.

YOUTH: But it almost sounds self-centered. Where do others fit in?

THOMAS: By pursuing your allurements, you help bind the universe together. The unity of the world rests on the pursuit of passion. Surprised? Let's experiment:

Bring to mind all the allurements filling the universe, of whatever complexity or order: the allurement we call gravitation, that of electromagnetic interactions, chemical attractors, allurements in the biological and human worlds. Here's the question: If we could snap our fingers and make these allurements - which we can't see or taste or hear anyway - disappear from the universe, what would happen?

To begin with, the galaxies would break apart. The stars of the Milky Way would soar off in all directions, since they would no longer hold each other in the galactic dance. Individual stars would disperse as well, their atoms no longer attracting each other but wandering off in all directions, releasing core pressure and thereby shutting down fusion reactions. The stars would go dark.

The Earth would break apart as well, all the minerals and chemical compounds dissolving, mountains evaporating like huge dark clouds under the noon sun. And even if the physical world retained its shape, the human world would disintegrate just the same. No one would go to work in the morning. Why should they? There would be no attraction for the work, no matter what it was. Activity would cease. Did scientists once find the universe interesting, staying up nights to reflect on its mysteries? No longer. Did lovers chase each other in the night, abandoning all for the adventure of romance? Never again. All interest, enchantment, fascination, mystery, and wonder would fall away, and with their absence all human groups would lose their binding energy. Galaxies, human families, atoms, ecosystems, all disintegrating immediately as the allurement pervading the universe is shut off. Nothing left. No community of any sort. Just nothing.

YOUTH: That's an amazing experiment.

OUR DESTINY AS ENCHANTMENT

THOMAS: It underlines the primary result of all allurement, which is the evocation of being, the creation of community. All communities of being are created in response to a prior mysterious alluring activity. Now you can understand what love means: Love is a word that points to this alluring activity in the cosmos. This primal dynamism awakens the communities of atoms, galaxies, stars, families, nations, persons, ecosystems, oceans, and stellar systems. Love ignites being.

We awake to fascination and we strive to fascinate. We work to enchant others. We work to ignite life, to evoke presence, to enhance the unfolding of being. All of this is the actuality of love. We strive to fascinate so that we can bring forth what might otherwise disappear. But this is exactly what love does: Love is the activity of evoking being, of enhancing life.

YOUTH: Now, this is human love you are describing?

THOMAS: No, no, no. You must begin to see this activity as basic to the universe. Consider a star. In its core, helium, carbon, oxygen, silicon, all the elements up to iron are created in blazing heat. If a star is of sufficient size, after billions of years it explodes, creating all the rest of the elements, sending them off into the universe. Our own solar system emerged from material of an exploded supernova, creating the planets and their many elements. Minerals and life forms are created out of supernova explosions.

Think about it! When you breathe, you breathe the creations of a star. All the life you will live is possible because of the gifts of that star. Your life has been evoked through the work of the heavens, do you see? The star emerges out of its own response to allurement, then evokes the life of others. The air we breathe, the food we eat, the compounds out of which we are composed: all creations of the supernova.

Drawn into existence by allurement, giving birth, then drawing others into existence - this is the fundamental dynamism of the cosmos. In this we can see the meaning of human life and human work. The star's own adventure captures the whole story. It is created out of the creations of the fireball, enters into its own intense creativity, and sends forth its works throughout the galaxy, enabling new orders of existence to emerge. It gives utterly everything to its task - after its stupendous creativity, its life as a star is over in one vast explosion. But - through the bestowal of its gifts - elephants, rivers, eagles, ice jams, root beer floats, zebras, Elizabethan dramas, and the whole living Earth, become possible. Love's dynamism is carved into the principal being of the night sky.

YOUTH: Are you saying that the star is aware of what it is doing?

THOMAS: Well, yes and no. But let's think about it a moment. We are the self-reflexion of the universe. The universe is aware of itself through self- reflexive mind, which unfurls in the human. We allow the universe to know and feel itself. The creative work of the supernovas existed for billions of years without self-reflexive awareness. That star could not, by itself, become aware of its own beauty or sacrifice. But the star can, through us, reflect back on itself. In a sense, you are the star. Look at your hand - do you claim it as your own? Every element was forged in temperatures a million times hotter than molten rock, each atom fashioned in the blazing heat of the star. Your eyes, your brain, your bones, all of you is composed of the star's creations. You are that star, brought into a form of life that enables life to reflect on itself. So, yes: the star does know of its great work, of its surrender to allurement, of its stupendous contribution to life, but only through its further articulation - you.

When we deepen our awareness of the simple truth that we are here through the creativity of the stars, we begin to feel fresh gratitude. When we reflect on the labor required for our life, reverence naturally wells up within us. Then, in the deepest regions of our hearts, we begin to embrace our own creativity. What we bestow on the world allows others to live in joy. Such a stupendous mystery. . . !

YOUTH: Am I then to become like a star?

THOMAS: In its pursuit of allurement, yes. In its complete immersion in the work at hand, in its identification with the activities of arousing being, yes. There are so many beings you can emulate: the simplest prokaryotic organisms struggled ceaselessly and with stunning success, altering the nature of the Earth permanently. They roamed through life and hatched those seeds of power we call genes. Who could have created them if they had not? We have no talent for that kind of work. We carry their achievements in our bodies. All the hundreds of thousands of genes in our bodies that enable such lambent beauty to delight the planet were handed to us by these primitive creatures. Your gratitude includes them. Your life emerges through their creativity.

YOUTH: But they didn't know what they were doing I don't see how I can be grateful to them for their mindless behavior.

THOMAS: Do you know what you are doing?

YOUTH: More than they.

THOMAS: I would hope so, yes. Unless their labor was in vain. But do you know what you are doing when you find Shakespeare so fascinating? Do you know what's happening, in a cosmic sense? Can you explain to me quite simply why humans find mountains magnificent beyond capture in language, why they risk their lives to be up there on angular planes of granite?

YOUTH: Well, no. Not in any ultimate sense.

THOMAS: Then you share the same cosmic ignorance with the microorganisms who created the informed sequences of nucleotides we call genes. Neither you nor they understand why the cosmos should glimmer with beauty, drawing forth our deepest efforts. The simple truth is that we do pursue the fascinating beauty that surrounds us.

EVIL FROM COSMIC RISK

YOUTH: This is all so idealistic. I mean, sure there is beauty, but look at the way that everything is so fouled up now. Here we are on the verge of blowing up the Earth. Why is it so bad? Why are we so violent? Why can't we just avoid all this suffering that we see everywhere? Are people ignorant of all this stuff you're talking about? Or is it something else?

THOMAS: To begin with, understand that humans are not unique in having to suffer. Nor are humans unique in being violent. We live in a violent universe. Violence fills the cosmos in various forms, and human violence is only one of these. Violence is a universal fact, but not the dominant fact of the universe. The great mystery is not violence, but beauty. We note the violence, all the more amazed that such stupendous graciousness and beauty should exist anywhere at all.

YOUTH: But where does violence come from?

THOMAS: Destruction has its roots in the allurement permeating the universe. Allurement is the source of all activity, even destructive activity. The star, responding to allurement, destroys itself. No one comes from the outside to demolish the star. The star implodes, smashing itself into a trillion parts - its journey ended. Such tremendous violence, yet see the graciousness of hundreds of billions of stars swirling in the galactic dance.

The biological world knows all sorts of violence. The same urge that draws the lion to the river for water draws it on to kill the wildebeest. Insects are so intent to stretch forth and explore the world that they will devour their own parents if they can not find other food. Fascination with living, the enchantment of being alive, the beauty of the surrounding world - all these draw creatures into violent acts and into the destruction of being, but after four billion years of life on Earth, what beauty has blossomed forth! There is danger in the natural world, a constant challenge, excitement, violence, risk, and terror, but out of this emerges the wonder of the Earth.

With the human a new quality of violence enters the Earth system, one coming from the power of self-reflexion. This new awareness is a risk as well as an achievement of the life process. In a sense, the earth wounded itself when it took on self-reflexive sentience: there appeared new powers of creativity, new dangers of destruction. The question hanging in the solar system today is this: Will the Earth benefit in beauty by risking human self-reflexive awareness? Or will the Earth suffer a new and permanently crippling violence?

That we have brought a new level of violence to the Earth is clear. We have multiplied extinction rates many times over. The best estimates now show that the Earth loses a species every twenty minutes. We are soaking all life forms with poisons, changing rivers into lethal sewage, and hurling millions of tons of noxious gases into the respiratory system of the Earth. As scientific as we claim to be, we have yet to realize that babies do not come from storks. The simplest, most empirical fact is that babies of every species are created out of soil, air, rain, food, and rivers. If we change all of these into poison, we must accept the fact that we change our unborn into poison as well. What materials will be used for their arms but the minerals of the poisoned continents? Of what stuff will their eyes be fashioned but the water of our lethal rivers? What will those wet fleshy brains be made of but noxious gases and acid rain?

Can Earth sustain our violence? Can a great beauty grow from the ruins we leave? Concerning this question, it is important to understand the temporal nature of the Earth's creativity. The Earth at one time was able to create life, but that time has gone. The first life forms consumed the very conditions that enabled life to emerge. The fertility of the Earth is different now. If the higher life forms disappear, they can not be re-created. When life forms vanish, they vanish forever.

YOUTH: But why has there been such a jump in violence with us? Why couldn't we blend in the way other species blended in?

THOMAS: This is the danger of self-reflexive awareness, what I mean when I say Earth in a sense wounded itself by allowing self-reflexion to emerge. The human is dangerous precisely because the universe is sublime. Here is the real question: "Can the cosmos survive the vision of its own beauty?" Can the Earth continue to create beauty once it has created a mirror to this beauty? Can the Earth continue to organize its unfolding once its depths of eros have been tasted, their sweetness enjoyed?

YOUTH: You're saying that beauty and allurement are at the root of all evil activity?

THOMAS: Yes.

YOUTH: Then what goes wrong?

THOMAS: Humans are easily addicted to beauty, even a clouded vision of it, and we can not break the addiction. Our agricultural processes poison our water and destroy four billion tons of topsoil on the American continent each year, and still we keep at it. We are captivated by our consumer lives, addicted, and apparently nothing can break through. Unable to see the simple sadness of our way of life, sunk into our addictions, we overstuff our homes and garages, carrying on, unmoved by the smoke rising over the burnt-out lives of fifty other nations and a million other species. The American mind resembles a glove compartment, jammed tight with useless junk that no one pays any attention to until we consider cleaning it out; and even then, even as we wonder why we so needlessly clog up our lives, unable to part with it all, we just jam it back in its place.

The way to break an addiction is to break out of a limited world view. Break out of egocentricity. Break out of ethnocentricity. Break out of anthropocentricity. Take the view point of the Earth as a whole. In every fascination, in every allurement, include the vitality of the Earth. You are the Earth, too. The Earth is not different from you. This planet bloomed through millions of years and arrived at the stupendous achievement of self-reflexion. She surpassed herself, shivering with joy at the thought of housing a creature through whom her depths, her beauty, her majesty could be cherished in a new intensity. Imagine Earth's astonishment to see us attempt to satisfy ourselves by transforming the Earth into throw-away tinsel, most of it noxious to all forms of life. Imagine the hilarity and pathology of a civilization devoted to stacking up this stuff, instead of plunging into the joy that has been prepared over billions of years.

YOUTH: Then why didn't the Earth bring forth humans who were born free of our liability? You say our minds fixate on partial visions, that we forget the whole, the Earth, that we become addicted. Why didn't the Earth avoid all the destruction we inflict?

THOMAS: Our task is to explore, to celebrate and delight in the depths of the universe. To enter this work often involves tremendous suffering. You ask, "Why can't we be excused from our destiny?" We can be excused from this task only if some other species accomplishes it for us. Does this option appeal to you? To have something else do the work of the human? To suddenly have no worth or value whatsoever for the whole? In that case, why would the universe bother with us at all? We would have nothing to contribute. We would be, at best, only troublesome stowaways on the great cosmic journey.

The history of life can be understood as the creation of ever more sensitive creatures in a universe where there is always another dimension of beauty to be felt and savored. Think of yourself that way, as a supreme power of sensitivity surrounded by magnificence.

The paradox is this: the greater your sensitivity, the more unbearable the tension. It is much easier to latch onto just one of these allurements, making it the whole. Anyone who grabs a sliver of beauty and insists that it is the whole becomes a fanatic, workaholic, cynic, fundamentalist, or drug addict.

To break the tension of living in a universe rich in allurements is to move toward the needless destruction of pursuing a partial vision. The glory of the human is also the difficulty of the human. Precisely because we are able to feel such beauty, we are simultaneously vulnerable to the addiction of fanaticism in any of a million forms.

YOUTH: Then every destructive act comes from responding to beauty?

THOMAS: Ultimately, yes. The starting point, the first link in the chain, is an act of destruction resulting from a craving that disregards the whole story and the vitality of the whole. Destructive acts are then linked through generations as one violence is transmitted and compounded into other violences. These chains of misery can stretch through millions of years, binding up whole societies in torment. In this way, needless destruction is a response to evil that has been handed down. Parents inflict the self- contempt upon their children in physical and psychic abuse, who in turn project their self-hatred onto others and their own children. The Earth suffers under the weight of accumulated misery and pathology, all of which has its ultimate source in acts of egocentric craving. Think of all this suffering, not only human feeling but the torment in so many many realms of the planet! The magnitude of the Earth's adventure staggers the human imagination!

YOUTH: Is there no end to it?

THOMAS: Each individual person has the power of participating in the transformation of the whole Earth. The evil that reaches you after so many millions of years of existence can be absorbed and transformed. You have the power to accept the suffering, to refuse to pass it on to another, to forgive, to end the needless torment, and, most of all, to transmute evil into energy for the vitality of the whole.

WE ARE DRAGON FIRE

This power of transformation is just one aspect of the creative fire that was there in the primeval fireball, in the extravagant generosity of the supernovas, in the persistent creativity of biological systems. That which created all of this now desires our creativity, commitment, and labor, our delight in entering with full awareness the cosmic story. The mountains and oceans, stars and life forms - all recipients of the same generosity, contributors to the unknown future culminations of our work - all tremble with the same power. Given a finite number of days in which to live, a particular store of primordial fire with which to work, who could deny that all that matters is contributing to the awesome work of fashioning the universe?

And that's why I condense our contemporary cosmological scientific story of reality by saying that the universe is a green dragon. Green, because the whole universe is alive, an embryogenesis beginning with the cosmic egg of the primeval fireball and culminating in the present emergent reality. And a dragon, too, nothing less. Dragons are mystical, powerful, emerging out of mystery, disappearing in mystery, fierce, benign, known to teach humans the deepest reaches of wisdom. And dragons are filled with fire. Though there are no dragons, we are dragon fire. We are the creative, scintillating, searing, healing flame of the awesome and enchanting universe.

What is Bio-Regional Animism ?!

The goal of this project is to allow the land to express itself through us again. To reincarnate the old traditions and lost tribes, to see that new traditions are being born as new expressions of the land & skies consciousness, to commune with the land and sky and celebrate our oneness with it.
To help support a diverse system of developing ecological and spiritual cosmologies much like indigenous minds have always done, through the act of communion!
The dream is to establish a body of work that can be shared with others to promote bioregional animist communities around the world, and to establish a network of sustainable earth communities based off the
bioregional animist principles of acknowledging that we are one with our environment, that we are surrounded by other than human persons which we are related to, that we must live in a respectful way with these other than human persons, and last but not least that we can establish respectful relationships through communication with our other than human relations.
The main thesis of Bioregional animism will soon be spelled out more clearly and an open invitation of animists world round to share their perspectives in the hope of establishing a healthy and diverse perspective.

Please share your thoughts on Bioregional Animism. Share your experiences with communing with the land and sky, and the other than human persons that are our relations.

This work is part of the bioregionalism movement, the new animism ( as described by Graham Harvey and indigenous people around the world) movement, the reclaiming movement, the DYI movement, the new shamanism movement, and many, many, many, movements to just live and be in harmony with our natural surroundings. Because bioregional animism is focused on personal and communal relationships with the land and sky and the other then human persons that inhabit land and sky, the bioregional animist tribe does not attempt to find one way for every one, it does not attempt to adopt or culturally appropriate any existing cultures, but instead asks that we do as our ancestors have done, begin anew, go directly to the source or culture and animism and shamanism, and find our own way. The project asks that wee become native again and put down roots in the psychic soil of the place that we live. The project asks that we stop out sourcing our traditions and adapting practices from out side of our own bioregion and find the spirit of shamanism and animism in our back yard. The project asks that we think globally and act locally when it comes to our spiritual practice and life ways.
There is a place
Where birds sing to the Sun
So the people have music to move to
Their feet chanting to the Earth with each step
Dancing deeper into worship
Praying to Her with laughter.

The seeds are planted
And Her smile is in the food growing
This sacred garden of blessings
Into our souls.
There is a place
Where children run wild like the flowers
Where stinging plants remind you where you stand
Where the Moon seduces the Sun every night in a bed of stars
Where myths are reborn by the fire
And wisdom is whispered in the trees
Where the language of the Earth Our Mother is spoken.

No matter where you come from,
Her
You are at home.
