So what happened to Dream Camp?

I'm still puzzled about what ever happened to all the activities that were planned for Dream Camp. Did the sound healing, lectures about dome building or healthy foods ever materialize? I did hear the SpiritRave system for 2 nights at the end of the week but was disappointed that the purple pajama party and parade to The Dreamer never occured on any night. Just wondering what happened?

On the final "awakening" Saturday night it was just a handful of folks from my Dreamshare camp that put on a performance. Where did everyone go?

The Rave issue

After years of anticipating and discussing a dream related Burning Man theme with Larry Harvey, "Psyche" has finally arrived. I realize there is a variety of interests that may come together for your "Dream Camp." Our camp of dream workers is actually right next door, not officially part of Dream Camp though we requested the use of a shade structure for overflow dream groups if the daily sessions in the head prove to be popular.

Pepe isn't the only one who was surprised by the addition of DJs and a sound system to Dream Camp. Like Pepe, I have a great aversion to mindless electronica monotony. My background is in contemporary classical music which has a lot more going on in it. Though I love this music, I'd never dream of playing at 4 in the morning to people who had no interest. Unlike sculpture, music pervades the area and there is no way of escaping it. Of all the changes at Burning Man over the years (I've gone every year since 1990), the encroachment of rave culture on the event is the most upsetting. A variety of music evident in the original Burning Man gatherings has been largely replaced by this homogenous "rave" music in which contrast is largely missing.

My pledge to my friend Larry Harvey is to have legitimate dream interpretation groups within Pepe's sculpture during the daylight hours. To accomplish this we may have to lead overflow groups either in our camp or Dream Camp. Having dance beats going during these meetings would be highly disruptive. In addition to this, I'm planning an awakening ceremony with Elonifer's help. This ceremony will be an interesting way to combine the dream sessions with the lighting of the hearth inside Pepe's sculpture.

Other of my own plans were to have impromptu dream theater (dream reenactments with simple masks and costumes on stage) and showings of surreal films (one of my specialties) at night. Again, a next door dance party makes these additions impossible.

All I ask as a neighbor to your camp is for an understanding of what the dream group leaders are trying to do. The amplified music may make in impossible to accomplish what we came for and force our camp to move elsewhere. Since Larry has written up a handout which lists Dream Camp as source for information on the dream interpretation groups, it would be natural for us to be close by.

Like Pepe, I don't see the need for yet another dance club atmosphere at our camp -- there are plenty of others happening out there. I'm curious how other Dream Campers feel about this. So far, most of what I read is Elonifer's writings.

THank you for this suggestion.
I think that would be a simple and easy solution.... after all... some camps are whole blocks! This is more or less the idea of the extended "Quiet Zone" that Casey and his crew worked out... simply move part of the camp away from the stage area!

THe important thing is, however, to get a head count and a vehicle count, with size of any special tent space or RV, etc so that we can claim that space before all the other Theme camps do.
Casey will be in contact with me sporadically and we can relay info via Aden (aka Emily) who is our Camp Stress Manager.

Can you purchase some extra string for this?

DREAM CAMP GUIDELINES AND REQUIREMENTS:

1.)
All members of DREAM CAMP shall endeavor to persevere in discovering and expressing:
"What Makes You Feel Most Alive!"

Honoring Love's Labor Lost

{For those who missed it, this is my heartfelt understanding
of Pepe, the man, the genius, and my friend. }

MY Dear friend Pepe,

And all those who are reading this...

I have worked with you, Pepe, whom I have admired and respected
since my first Burn in your Opera, many years ago. THe Temple
of Rhudra was for me a moving and profound experience. I
performed in every one of them after that. Your absence from
the playa, and the grand operas that we performed in, I missed
greatly.

I have wanted to see this great man bring his art back to the
playa for years now.
As some of you have too I'm sure.
Pepe originally asked me to help him for a couple of weeks. I
came one day and worked from sun-up to almost sun-down.
He bought me a nice lunch.
He said he had been sleepless lately and his eyes were red.
Over wine and dinner at his wonderful home with the beautiful
skylight and echo's of operas past along his walls, he asked me
to stay for 2 months with a small stipend. I was not sure if
this would be enough to get me to Burning Man, but... I want so
much for the world to know what an amazing artist and sculptor
that Pepe is.
Although at times he modestly calls himself a builder.

I did not answer for a while because this would leave me just 20
days to prepare myself for the playa. I was not sure if this
would give me time for my own needs and obligations,
specifically: the coordination with all those who have been in
contact with me since last Burning Man, and most actively these
past nine months to collaborate on this year's continuation of
the GIAMIND project.
As I have said, this is the 2nd part of an 8 year countdown to
the "End of Time" in 2012, according to the Maya.
Still, the thought of getting to work for him, and the chance to
bring his art back to the playa was overwhelming.
I knew I could do both if I used all my skills and strengths to
accomplish it. After writing, directing, performing,and
producing last years Opera while simultaneously volunteering for
both the Cafe Decor Team and the Cafe' as a barista, ( although
I only did two shifts there,) I figured I could do it. And
hey, it's art and I'm getting paid! I'll hold off on those
parking tickets.

I knew that I would say yes the minute I had returned from a
long days work of
cutting, welding, torching, bending, molding, re-cutting,
re-welding, re-bending and him proclaiming here and there,
"This- is- a -Disaster!"

I would just smile and see my own father in his fiery eyes.
I have Spanish blood in me, and Pepe reminds me of my father,
and my grand-father, Pepo, who I never got to know. He also was
a sculptor of sorts.
I guess, that's why I knew I would say yes, no matter what. I
would just have to find a resourcefull way to get back home to
the Black Rock this year.

I plunged into the work and molded my life around one of my
first burns symbol of inspiration..... his rhythms and .... and
his lifestyle.
We worked side by side almost every day like that. No one could
ever say that Pepe is not a hard worker, or a long worker!
He did like to quit however at 6:00 pm, "Religiously," he would
say.
I worked right with him building and creating the Dreamer, as he
used all our heads as his models.
I have nothing but respect and admiration for this man. And, I
know that we can work out an ameniable solution.
As I have said from the beginning, my purpose in establishing a
camp, is the CONTINUATION of the GIAMIND project that I began
last year. Why would it be otherwise?
Pepe was not interested in doing a camp, and Larry Harvey had
said he did not want an opera.
I agreed to help Pepe and Steve in assisting and collaborating
in a performance to light the fire in the Dreamer and open his
eyes.
I distinctly remember saying that I could work out a ritual with
Steve if he desired
It, and I would have no problem collaborating with my camp to
facilitate this outcome. I also distinctly remember Steve
saying that he would camp elsewhere with his group in a quieter,
more remote location, as we had requested to be placed on the
Esplanade, (not exactly the quietest spot.)
I then went in to the Burning Man office and told them I was
going to do a theme camp and that we would also be supporting
the ceremonial lighting of the Dreamer.
Pepe did request to be close to the Dreamer and in a quiet zone,
Well, we got close to the dreamer, and we are in a quiet zone,
.... relatively speaking. We are, however, no less than 1 1/2
blocks away from the LOUDEST SOUND SYSTEMS ON THE PLAYA!
Sound from our little pa watt system is not going to be an issue
in the noise in DREAM CAMP.
After collaborating with fellow performers I met through the
GIAMIND project, and agreeing on a name, we chose "DREAM CAMP."

Here then is the collaboration thus far and the performance
schedule that I have worked out with Steve Mobia, the idea man
behind the Dreamer, and Fred, of the Dream Share professional
psychologists group, who are doing the classes. For those who
have read it, this includes adjustments and corrections and
omissions, but probably a few more to come.... as I said, this
is a collaboration. I am open to any ideas or additions by any
and all artists participating in this amazing synchronistic
development that is occuring.
Let us continue in the spirit of Burning Man and in the spirit
of collaborative expression.

10 Principles

Radical Inclusion
Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.

Gifting
Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.

Decommodification
In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. Madness of "King" Pepe- emails:

These are emails that have caused some disruption within DREAM CAMP.
Please read them at your leisure and comment if you like.

{Here is an email forwarded to me from Pepe to a dj
within the musical group in our camp. Pepe has never
talked to me about any interest in contributing to
the makeup or design of DREAM CAMP until I began to
receive these derogatory and inflammatory emails filled
with condescending remarks. Also our position on the esplanade
requires that we be a model camp and adhere to the 10 principles
of Burning Man.}

Dear Joseph.

We have a problem indeed. Elonifer has proclaimed
himself the leader of Dreamer's camp, surprising me
and many others.

{Nothing could be further from the truth!! I have made no
declarations or proclamations of any kind. I registered
DREAM CAMP and I am assuming my role as FACILITATOR of this
collaborative project of GIAMIND. Proclaiming myself as "Leader" would
be anti-thetical to the GIAMIND philosophy as stated in my discussion list:
"To facilitate
a means of demonstrating the emerging planetary culture of a Global
Individual Aware Mind.... the GIAMIND; that is... the "Mind" that is both
Individually, and Globally Aware in expression through art, activity, and
collaborative community performance."

Elonifer and others should understand that Dreamer's
camp is an integral part, an extension of the
Dreamer, the sculpture, which has different leaders
and artistic objectives than Elonifer's, all
together.

{First of all, I did not register "Dreamer's" camp because
I did not wish for anyone to confuse us as solely associated
with the Dreamer. I registered "DREAM CAMP" not only as a support
camp for Pepe, but as a "COLLABORATIVE PERFORMANCE" camp of many
groups whose offerings are listed in the Theme camps section of the
Burning Man site. Let there be no confusion. All these offerings, as well
as the name, "DREAM CAMP" are a collaboration by several groups
and not me alone.}

In other words, without the sculpture, my
relationship with BM staff and my note asking for an
Esplanade space, Dream camp wouldn't exist.

{Not so! Pepe's note was an after thought. We are on the Esplanade because
we are a "PERFORMANCE" camp. A camp that would merely SUPPORT
the work on the Dreamer would not be in a high profile
position on the playa. As a performance theme camp in
a high visibility position, we are obligated to
be an example of what the Burning Man community is
all about. His note asked for a space as close to the Dreamer as possible,
and we got that. I requested us to be a PERFORMANCE camp also.
The esplanade is reserved for those camps who
create a performance WITHIN the camp and/or an interactive space.
Theme camps on the esplanade are obligated to exemplify the
10 GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF BURNING MAN.}

Elonifer
didn't have the right to proclaim himself as a leader
and he did this without my knowledge. If this
situation continues at the playa, I will have Elonifer
removed from our camp. Easy for me to do this.

{Again, I have never proclaimed myself as leader and I do not
intend to do so. Pepe is imagining this, or outright lying
to deceive and manipulate you. I don't know. Declaring myself as
"Leader" is counter to the guiding principles of my GIAMIND project}

We are a bunch of sculptors, painters, musicians, etc,
who abhor any sort of rave music and would be
profoundly displeased and distracted with something
like that happening within our camping area.

{We have been talking and scheduling our performances
for over 9 months. WHy Pepe never mentioned anything
about his need for specific music is beyond me. He said
he had about a dozen friends that would camp with us,
and I don't know if we can accomodate any more,
and now he feels he can DICTATE what we can do in the
camp that I have established. As for Rave music, we are creating
music to facilitate dreaming and dream workshops and some will
facilitate ecstatic kundalini dance. Some times will be for
acoustic performance and workshops, and all will be done by
collaboration within the collective vision of engendering the
GIAMIND experience.}

So,
Joseph, if you are planning to do any kind of rave
music at BM, I would advise you to join another camp.

Raw or Vegi Food Kitchen

WE have a chef interested in doing a raw food or close to it kitchen.
I'm guessings $100 = 2 meals + snacks x 5 days with Sunday evening a eat-all-the -left-overs-you-can meal.
There will be some chore sign up of course.
Give us details of your needs, interests, and resources and we will post details back.
Mathew is interested in the Chef position so .... who wants to eat healthy in the desert?

DREAM CAMP SHOW AND INTRO

Fantaaaaaaaaabulous!

Come by DREAM CAMP, 3:00 x Esplanade, connect and find somewhere to "plug in" with us that "MAKES YOU FEEL MOST ALIVE!"

The daily show is as follows:

4:20-5:20 Dream Share class where performers are allowed to listen in on shared dreams (some restrictions may apply) and incorporate a scene into the evening ritual if desired.

7pm- sunset
Purple Pajama Party Parade to march around THe MAn and up to the Dreamer to perform a ritual of Awakening, light the fire within, and open his eyes.

Performance time pre-sunset: 11:11 minutes long!

Gather and place audience around the Dreamer.
Dream Spirits hush audience and gather sleepers to front.
A blindfold is placed around the Dreamer's head as eyelids are removed.
Sandman goes through and puts audience to sleep.
Singing by Amae and I to Dream Song....

Simultaneous performance (when available) atop a 10' x 10' raised mobile stage with a skeletal pyramid on top and dream inducing crystals (the Dream-cubator).
A couple will lay themselves to sleep and a daily variety of performers will enact a scene from the Dream Share group around them while they sleep.
Moment of silence at end and while darkness falls.
Sounds of didjereedoo and Thuvian throat singing eminate from inside the Dreamer's head.
At 11:11 minutes the Dream Spirits rush through audience again and whisper:
"Pss-s-s-t..... Wake Up! ...... You're Dreaming! Pass it on....."
Fire is lit within the Dreamer and stilt walkers positioned on either side will remove blindfold from around the Dreamers head.
All celebrate and guest drummers and firedancers are allowed to perform.

Parade back to DREAM CAMP for pajama party.....
then you're on your own!

Greetings to all in DREAM CAMP
I am your host, Elonifer.
I would like to welcome you to my humble project:

I am the project founder and camp coordinator, and facilitator. I have established this camp as a continuation of last year's project, and as such, the 2nd part of an 8 year countdown to the "End of Time" in 2012. This is the "End of Time" according to the Mayan calendar. We may expect that many greater and larger events and groups will converge and collaborate through these seven years until then, to a synchronistic planetary celebration.
My concept is to facilitate a means of demonstrating the emerging planetary culture of a Global Individual Aware Mind.... the GIAMIND; that is... the "Mind" that is both Individually, and Globally Aware in expression through art, activity, and collaborative community performance.

Last year I grounded the project in Opera Camp with a small but profound performance, "The Eye of Heaven," focused around Anni Hallet's piece, "The Spiral Eye of the Celestial Falcon." The production engendered modest but clearly Divinely Inspired results that confirmed the theory and the ancient hermetic law:
"The whole is greater than the sum of its parts."

As a multi-media artist and performer, I am allowing each group who participates, to bring their own special talent and gift into a collective camp presentation through classes, group activities, and performance revolving around the Burningman theme and an aritst's work. In this way, we may all share in that "which is greater than the sum of all of us."

Our entire DREAM CAMP, becomes then, an experiment in a new social and cultural way of being, sharing, and connecting with each other. Further, in gathering artists from all mediums: visual, audio, tactile, aoromatic, kinetic and epicurean, (i.e. sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, and motion), The whole DREAM CAMP becomes a synergistic multi-media art presentation!
WE ARE THE SHOW!!!
Hopefully we can then take this intrinsic knowledge, and skills of communicating that we experience, out into the world beyond the borders of Black Rock City.
This year, we will ground the performance with all parameters that pertain to the natural symbolism of the 1st Chakra. We will progress through the next few years up to the Crown, or 7th Chakra in 2012.
For now, I have gathered groups who share a common vision to further demonstrate how amazing and synchronistic this type of collaboration can be..... oh, and fun! In a unique demonstration of GIAMIND, this year's groups include:
the Green Society Association of netwworkers in action;
the 7th Mystery School, doing DNA activations, body and mind purifications, and ritual performance;
Sustainable Dome Communities, teaching sustainable building and environmental harmony, and financial independence.
WholeFoodsFarmacy, bringing "PHI" dried fruit and nut products and raw food ideology;
DreamWerks, a group of dream professionals doing dream sharing;
Kundalini Dancers, with Luna Ravenchild, teaching Ecstatic dance;
Various teachers and healers, including from Hawaii, Lehuani, using the latest in sound vibrational healing;
SpiritRave, providing sound alchemy and dream ambiance;
Myself, Elonifer Skyhawk, with others, sharing stone healing, solar gazing, and lucid/Shamanic dreaming...
...and many others with gifts aplenty!

We will have daily demonstrations, classes, workshops, activities and of course celebration!

We are fortunate this year to have as our collaborating visual artist, Pepe Ozan, whose sculpture, The Dreamer, will be celebrated each day from 7pm to sunset. We will host a Purple Pajama Party Parade to Awaken the sleeping Dreamer,light the fire within, and open his eyes!
In continuing with the theme and workshops of Dream groups and our own focus on healing, foods, and sustainable lifestyles, we will utilize the gifts and talents of all in DREAM CAMP to create an environment that is "...THE STUFF THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF!"

Each group has the open opportunity to connect, collaborate, and merge with each other to combine classes and workshops with performance and celebration.
Collectively, this can be summarized as an explanation, a demonstration, and a practical exercise. -The basic formula in teaching anything to anyone!

This coordination can sometimes be tricky, but in doing this type of project for several years now, I am convinced that we will have an amazing performance, camp, and interactive connection with all on the playa within the Burning Man philosophy:
RaDiCaL SeLf EXPRESSION!
RADicAL PARTY-cipati-ON!
The potential for transformational experience is over the top!

We have it ALL happening this year and it is gonna be WAY KEWL! Waking the Dreamer nightly ceremony needs YOU!

I'd like to connect with performers who'd like to perform in the ceremony/parade to "wake up" the Dreamer every dusk during the Burning Man event. I'm organizing the daily dream interpretation groups in the big head but would also like the opening of the Dreamer's eyes to have a strong impact.
