Can't seem to get a handle on this one. I was in a forest there was patchy snow on the ground and I was camping. next thing I remember in the dream, a bear had ambled into the camp he didn't seem menacing more curious. and instead of being in my tent I was now under a deadfall. even though the bear didn't seem menacing I was still alarmed and just lay under the deadfall hiding hoping the bear would just wander away. Instead the bear walks over to the pile of branches putting his forelegs on my flimsy shelter and starts bouncing up and down. I, still hoping that the bear will get bored and wander off just lay a still as I could. after a little more bouncing he pushes some of the logs out of the way and exposes my left hand snuffs it then bites off my pinky and the finger next to it. then I woke up. even as all this was going on i wasn't afraid and felt no malice from the bear. the bear seemed curios and playful not threatening.
if you have any thought's I'd love to hear your spin on this.

Re: bitten by a bear
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 4:14 PMI really like this dream and feel it's important. I went looking for info on bears as totems (as I really feel the bear is totemic for you now that you've had this dream) - there was a strong emphasis on the hibernation aspect of the bear and the need to go within - it surprised me that so many other significant aspects of bear didn't seem to figure in these interpretations.
So when I went back just now and re-read your dream I noticed something right away. Patchy snow.
I think your dream is doing a kind of reversal of the bear-in-hibernation thing. The bear has *been* hibernating, but now it's awake. In the dream you yourself actually go into a kind of shelter in which one can hibernate, to get away from the now-active bear, just in case. But the bear goes right for you, and in the spontaneous actions of this bear, he's going to get you out of that little shelter of yours, even if it's piece by piece.
And of course, in this hemisphere anyway, it's now spring time. Time to come out of hiding and sleep.
It's got a combined tone of play (like a kid bouncing on a bed saying wake up! wake up! while you pull the covers over your head and say nooooooo, not yet) and danger. Consequences for not making a strong move. There are so many times when an energy can work for you for awhile, and then against you later--a dual aspect. The fact that you weren't scared of the bear, other than intellectually (enough to get into shelter just in case), and that you felt no menace from the bear, shows alignment with the bear. So I think you're sending the alert to yourself to get up, get out, make a move, get on with your life. Hope something there will be helpful.
So while I don't have a firm interpretation of the dream, it seems that -

Mon, March 24, 2008 - 10:56 PMlily,
I have never given much thought to totems, and to me it would seem unlikely the bear. I did however get a little spooky someone steped on my grave feeling so what you have writen sent up a red flag. I plan to look into this bear totem thing and if you have any more insight please let me know I think you may be on to something.
it still amazes me how well i can read dreams of others but how obtuse i can be with my very own.
thank you -

Re: bitten by a bear
Tue, March 25, 2008 - 9:37 AMsame here - I can get lucky with others' dreams especially if I know them. And sometimes just telling your own dream to someone else makes a meaning jump out at you. But especially lately I keep having dreams that puzzle me for weeks until I finally just give up and start wondering about a new one.

Re: bitten by a bear
Tue, March 25, 2008 - 12:46 PMMy 1st thought was Bear medicine . . . it didn't seem like a bad omen, just a lesson . . .
The Bear
There are several types of bear including the Grizzly, Brown, Black, Kodiak and Polar. Bear has played a prominent role in many Native cultures. They are considered to be a highly desired ally and spirit helper because of its fearless power. It is believed that the power of Great spirit lives through this animal. Because of this a constellation was named for it, Ursus Major, The Great Bear. Some tribes prayed for medicine dreams that would show bear to be their guide. Others felt the bear was too powerful a medicine and would only hunt them if it meant not starving.
In some traditions bear is the spirit keeper of the West. The place of maturity and good harvest. The gifts that bear offers to those with this totem are strength, introspection and knowledge.
Unlike other animals who are active during a specific time of day, the bear is active both day and night. This symbolizes its connection with solar energy, that of strength and power, and lunar energy, that of intuition. It enhances and teaches those with this totem how to develop both within themselves.
Bear can sometimes be too quick to anger and too sure of it own power. While they have little to fear they can forget caution, which is an important trait to have. If bear is your totem be careful that you don't throw your caution to the wind. Being unaware of your limits in certain settings can be disastrous.
Many years ago while hiking in the woods I was surprised to meet a black bear face to face. As it stood before me the power that the bear held intimidated me. Fears surfaced and I was sure I was going to die. I rose my arms high over my head appearing larger than I was. Because I created an illusion of size and strength my life was spared. The bear watched, dropped down onto all four legs and slowly moved away. Bear taught me the importance of appearance by gathering my inner strength and presenting it outwardly.
During the winter bears spend several months sleeping in dens without eating, a condition that resembles hibernation. The more fat their bodies have stored up the deeper the sleep. Bears live on this fat throughout the winter. It teaches us how to go within and find the resources necessary for our personal survival.
The bear holds the teachings of introspection. When it shows up in your life pay attention to how you think, act and interact. Use discernment in all that you do and discriminate with care. Bear teaches you how to make choices from a position of power. -

Tue, March 25, 2008 - 7:59 PMArtistprieste: wow that is a very powerfull experience. I think I would have made a mess off my jeans if that had hapened to me oh and the bear in the dream was redish brown and big that is the best detail I can remember. I have now idea what type of bear and thank you for the information you must have done a lot of research into this topic..
I have been
lily: even the little surfing I have done on the topic has shown me you are correct this totem is a very akin to my current state. I have been shy and reclusive to the point of a phobia (not really but close). and now I am being told winter is ending it is time to come out of hibernation and seclusion after all if a person in a forest is happy and their is no one around to share it is he really happy. (my attempt at a joke)
again thank you both for your gifts. I hope they are returned to you two fold. -

Re: bitten by a bear
Wed, March 26, 2008 - 8:46 AMSorry, correction, this was not my experience, but was taken from Animal Speaks, by Ted Andrews, which is a great resource for animal totems and medicine . . . I have however, had the same experience with a mountain lion and a herd of Elk at 12K feet . . . The point is just that an animal doesn't have to be your personal guide or totem, but animal medicine can be what you need at that particular time in your life . . .

Re: bitten by a bear
Wed, March 26, 2008 - 6:42 PMI had a bear dream when I was very young and it frightened me so much that I still remember it vividly.
I was in a tree in our backyard with some friends and there were little robots and things about and a general feeling of warning and danger. I ignored it and carelessly came down from the tree along with all my friends.
The bear came from out of nowhere and chased us. Even though we were already running, it gained on us and my friends got away but I was the slowest one and the last thing I saw was it's huge mouth opening and my thoughts of "oh my gosh ... I can't believe it actually happened to me. I didn't think it was really possible for that to happen."
I had vastly underestimated it and not taken my running seriously. I had repeatedly turned back to giggle.
That feeling of someone walking on your grave hit a nerve with me regarding that dream!
It still sends a chill down my spine. I still can't believe it actually got me. It really got me too. The detail of the inside of that mouth is pretty severe. -

Re: bitten by a bear
Thu, March 27, 2008 - 5:26 PMthis bee dream reminds me of my first ever recurring nightmare:
at the foot of my bed is a closet with no door, just a dark rectangle. i see a little house spider in the doorway and think how cute and harmless it is. then it begins to grow. as it increases in size it changes shape, becoming ever more scary kinds of spider, until it gets so big its body fills up the entire closet and its legs are outside, waving and reaching out over my bed, thrashing in slow-motion trapped panic, and i know that at any second it will grow still bigger and it will burst out of the closet, impossibly huge, and land right on my bed. it is so much larger than i am i know i can never hope to escape.
i always awoke right before it got too big for the closet to contain it, but it scared the bejeezus out of me for years, the slow inevitability of it. i would sit up in the dark of my room, staring at that closet doorway, trying to see into the dimness if there was a little house spider in there... *shudder*
