What's the most dream-like movie you've seen?

I noticed the original thread for this topic was removed....so, I've decided to start it up again. I found it interesting and it gave me ideas for movies to add to my rental list. Here's my title:

Mulholland Drive

Look forward to your posts.

Peace, Bodhi

    Hi Bodhi,

I think that with David Lynch's films we are getting as close as possible with an artist's experience of the unconscious. Still, it is not the nicest side of it, and the films look more like nightmares than dreams.

I wonder if you saw 'Inland Empire' ? A genuine psychotic nightmare. Loops, doors leading nowhere, helplessness, frenzy … name it … it's all there. Lynch is a great artist anyway and the film one of the most stunning I saw since a long time. 'Mulholland Drive' was amazing too, though it seems a fairy tale when compared to 'Inland Empire'.

As a dream experience I would much prefer Terence Mallick's 'New world'.

        Constantine....

That John Constantine character originally showed up in one of the Sandman issues, created by Neil Gaiman, author of "Stardust", which has dream qualities...

if you want any work related to Dreams and Dreaming, you won't be disappointed if you look up Neil Gaiman... and his cronies...

      I agree Lucius.
Lynch walks the thin line between dreams and nightmares. Haven't seen "Inland Empire" yet, but I've heard of it.
"Mulholland Drive" just has this hazy, dream like quality to it. Very sexy too. You're never sure if anything is "real" (whatever that might mean).

      Peace, Bo
  • Has anyone seen an older movie called "Jacob's Ladder"? It's more nightmarish than dream-like, but it has that feel when you're watching it - you fade in and out of detail in a weirdish way.

Also, I watched "Vanilla Sky" and "Fight Club" within a week of eachother - talk about questioning reality! And, of course, "I Heart Huckabees" which I still need to get on DVD.

Oh, and an oldie but a goodie, "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" with Tim Roth and Gary Oldman.
  • im surprised waking life hasnt been mentioned here.
maybe cause its so obviously dream consciousness

also a scanner darkly is a similarly made film

and - hollywood, but just coming out in movies is 1408 - the schizoid dream

    • Groundhog Day

      The Matrix

      The Life Before This

      Sliding Doors

      Ghost Dog

      The Afterlife (Japanese)

      Spirited Away (Animated)

      Circle of Iron

      Momento

      Defending Your Life

Barata (silent, powerful "real" images, yet produced a very dreamlike state to the viewer -- well, at least it did for me)

actually, ANY movie that takes me totally to another realm, is like a dream
if it can hold me in that state from beginning to end
where i am not conscious that the people are acting
for the benefit of my entertainment
      then it is dreamlike!
i mean, even natural born killers was dreamlike to me
      and mrs doubtfire

perhaps i'm just a sucker for movies
or maybe i just love being taken to another place

after all, my favorite part of books is dreaming
my favorite part of sleeping is dreaming
my favorite part of living is the dream

waking life was a good movie... but I think it was more about dreams than feeling "dream-like."

For me, a lot of those old silent films feel like dreams. "Blue Bird of Happiness" and "Nosferateu" are the most recent I've seen...

neverland in hook is usually what my dreams are like
especially the night scene with the island and the clouds, the tree house, and the two moons...usually im flying
the whole thing has a danny elfman composition essence 2 it, like an edward scissorhands song

ive also had dreams where i fly over dark water and the sky is filled with stars and there is only a faint reflection of the stars on the rippling water.... and i fly from a huge thin stone out crops to another, past a huge whirlpool of dark water that looks like the stars, until i reach a different land thats sortof hidden in a labyrinth

another dream i had was where i was flying on a dragon over the grandcanyon and the sun was rising, and we were fling over the clouds

lots of flying...it always feel so real

btw i love pans labyrinth, its one of my favorite movies

Most movies are FAR too linear and logical to be similar to my dreams hehe.

so I am going to say:

Spirited Away (anime) - the most like my dreams...it almost makes sense its just a wee bit skewed

The Phantom Tollbooth (an old cartoon) - things change fast, scenery changes abruptly, objects and ideas become somewhat personified (not quite to the degree in the movie, however), characters could be anything and the things they say are almost random and make little sense at face value and instead point to some sort of abstract meaning... my sister has dreams similar to mine in this way.

    "being john malkovich" is bizarre.

    fellini's satyricon is also bizarre.

    cartain parts of dark city.

wong kar wai's "in the mood for love" and "2046"

nightmare on elm street, or rather, freddy kreuger gave me years of nightmares and sleepless nights. i'm kinda miffed about that now.
