Blood is life force.
His conciousness could be suggesting to him that his approach to this woman is a one sided affair that may be draining on her...

So If your friend and just watched a string of vampire horror movies for example...it'd be a different story all together but once again it seems to me his conciousness is trying to give him the heads up on the way he approaches women..
Do you know him well enough to see if this may be the case? -
