Classes, workshops, performance, and group feedback, and evaluation sessions will provide the dancers with tools for growth. The goal is to support the creative process and allow individuals to develop with a clear set of tasks to achieve that goal.
A Year & A Day Dance Project Start Date Jan 24

A Year and a Day Dance Project (AYAAD Dance Project)
Produced by The Drum & Dance Learning Center
Artistic Director/Facilitator: Alexia (Kim Leary)

Mission Statement
A Year and a Day Dance Project is an opportunity for dancers to join a collaborative experience committing one full year to developing a piece of choreography of their own through goal setting and personal development. Classes, workshops, performance, and group feedback, and evaluation sessions will provide the dancers with tools for growth. The goal is to support the creative process and allow individuals to develop with a clear set of tasks to achieve that goal. The project will culminate in a showcase of the works.

Commitment:
Dancers must fully commit to the yearlong process and be able to attend the group meetings and selected workshops and critique sessions. While group choreography is welcome, it is important that all involved keep their commitment to the project for the full year.

Our start date is Jan 24, 2009. E-mail me for full details on cost, date commitment and other info. Space is limited.
Kim Leary (Alexia) is a belly dance performer, choreographer and instructor in Central New Jersey. Her dance accomplishments include teaching both credit and non-credit dance at Princeton University. She is past advisor of (2000-2006) Raks Odalisque, Princeton University's Middle Eastern Dance Company. She is Co-Artistic Director of Groove Merchant Drum & Dance Ensemble and Co-Director of her school, The Drum & Dance Learning Center in Bordentown, New Jersey. Ms. Leary has performed at numerous prestigious venues such as Lincoln Center, The Ohio Theatre (SOHO), CAMI Hall (NYC), DanceSpace (NYC), FIT (NYC), The Evolving Arts Theatre (NYC), The Black Box Theatre (NJ), as well as at many colleges, universities, and festivals as a soloist and with her own dance company, with SaZ Dance Theatre and Jamila Salimpour's Bal Anat. She also has taught regularly at Rutgers University and Middlesex County College.

As an artist-in-residence in various schools throughout the state, her arts-in-education training is from Union County's CATALYST Initiative, Artsgenesis, and the Kennedy Center through the New Brunswick Cultural Center is certified in educational training and development. Kim is a Level 2 Certified Dancer and has been training in the Suhaila Salimpour Format since 2000.
She has studied dance for most of her life and has received extensive training in jazz, ballet, tap, contemporary, Middle Eastern, Turkish and Afro-Caribbean dance.

Philosophy: "A strong foundation of dance movement, belly dance technique, musical understanding and the creative process are the things that drive me. My hope is that each time you see me dance you learn another facet of what is going on creatively for me at that particular moment. And for my students, that each explores their own path and has their own voice with a strong base and ongoing process of growth to support that." - Kim Leary (Alexia)

Drawing from both Western and Eastern dance forms, Donna continually strives toward finding new ways to express her musicality with both honesty and respect. Although she was raised in various forms of dance including ballet, jazz, modern, and hip-hop, it was bellydance that inspired her to strengthen her connection to music and movement. Donna currently studies Middle Eastern and West African dance at the Drum & Dance Learning Center in Bordentown, NJ, where she is also an instructor and a performance ensemble member. She is working towards Level 2 Certification in the Suhaila Salimpour Format, as well as studying the Gypsy Caravan Tribal Bellydance Format through the Collective Soul Certification Program.

Her passion for dance drives her innovative expression of music, but it is her love of music that reminds her to seek knowledge and inspiration from all forms of dance. She truly hopes that her work conveys the respect and honor she holds for all those musicians and dancers who have led her thus far.

Aubre has been studying movement her entire life, everything from Bellydance, Jazz, Tap, Hiphop, Social dance, Ballet, Musical Theatre, Pilates, and Yoga. She is a lifelong student of Suhaila Salimpour and teaches bellydance technique based on the Suhaila format. The blend of her influences creates a strong basis for dynamic and innovative performances and teaching. With over 14 years of teaching experience and a broad background of movements, she gives her students the tools they need to progress and grow. With years of experience in jazz and the world of musical theatre, she passes along key elements to creating artistic and intriguing performances. Her classical Pilates training greatly influenced her own practice and thus the work she could offer her students, including injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Aubre is on faculty at California State University, Los Angeles teaching accredited bellydance and Pilates classes as well as teaches a full bellydance program at The Center of Worldance. She can also be seen on fitTV's "Bellydancing with Aubre: All Star Workouts." And recently released her first instructional dvd, "Bellydance Core Fitness."
Sabriye Tekbilek is a performer and instructor of Middle Eastern dance whose stage presence and technique have been shaped by a lifetime of international performance and study.
Daughter of renowned Turkish musician, "Haci" Ahmet Tekbilek, and Lisa Djeylan, pioneer of Belly Dance in Sweden, Sabriye was born into an environment of music and dance. As a child and young adult Sabriye studied many dance forms, including Middle Eastern Dance, Ballet and Flamenco.

While attending the University of California in Berkeley, she began taking classes with the internationally renowned Suhaila Salimpour, and quickly became a member of the Suhaila Dance Company and Bal Anat. It was while studying with both Suhaila and Jamila Salimpour that Sabriye was encouraged to begin teaching, awakening a new passion for instruction.

In 2005 Sabriye based herself in the Middle East, where she has been touring and performing ever since. She has danced across the U.S., in Sweden, Norway, England, Turkey, Spain, Greece, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Syria, Morocco, Tunisia and India. She has performed at exclusive venues including the Nobel Prize Party, Warner Bros. Studios, the Miss India Competition; and she has opened for popular Arabic
stars such as Ragheb Alama and Wael Kfoury, and regularly performs globally for dignitaries.

During her travels Sabriye continues to explore the depths of Middle Eastern Dance and music through studying and teaching workshops along her way. www.sabriyetekbilek.com

Nomadiqa Ethnic Fusion and Arabesque Beats - Repost

Hi Folks,
We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the tribal and belly dance community, and also people that are into this sort of vibe and music. Please feel free to have a listen on myspace where we have four full tracks available to listen online.

http://www.myspace.com/nomadiqa

It would also be great to promote it through the network of tribal and/or belly dance teachers who might be interested to sell it at a class or bazaar. We can offer it at wholesale prices with plenty of capacity for the seller to make a decent profit on top of the wholesale price.

Please contact info@nomadiqa.com for further details. Sorry for the self promotion.

Hope to hear from you.

Many thanks,

Learn both Bomba & Plena with Patricia Irizarry- Baretto

Plena is known as the "singing news paper" for the lower classes, and used to spread messages among people, similar to the corridos in Mexico. The traditional center of plena was probably San Antón, a barrio of Ponce, although the black neighborhood of Loíza aldea is also mentioned as the heartland for the genre. Its popularity peaked in the 1920s. Plena is played throughout Puerto Rico especially during special occasions such as the Christmas season, and as the musical backdrop for civic protests, due to its traditional use as a vehicle for social commentary. Whenever plena is played the audience also joins in the singing, clapping, and dancing.

Bomba is one of Puerto Rico's most famous musical styles. Although there is some controversy surrounding its origin, most agree that it is a largely African music. The rhythm and beat are played by a set of hand drums and a guiro. Bomba is described to be a challenge between the drummer and the dancer. The dancer produces a series of gestures to which the primo drummer provides a synchronized beat. Thus, it is the drummer who attempts to follow the dancer and not the other way around.
Suhaila Salimpour Format - Technique Intensive
*Taught by Kim Leary (Alexia), Certified Level 2 Dancer , Suhaila Salimpour School of Dance.
Kim is not an authorized instructor in this format but bases the technique intensives on her 6+ years training in the format.

The Suhaila Salimpour Technique is based on the expansion and evolution of the dance format created by Suhaila's mother, pioneer belly dancer Jamila Salimpour. Jamila was the first dance instructor to define the steps, such as "Basic Egyptian","Maya" and "Turkish Drop" now familiar to so many belly dancers in the United States and throughout the world. Her technical analysis of the movements and positions, which comprise belly dance has enabled students to assimilate this dance form in a logical manner for over 40 years. The Suhaila Salimpour Format method of instruction delineates which muscles are engaged in each movement as well as suggest specific exercises designed to build the muscular strength and endurance necessary to execute movements well. Each session will focus on technique with a strong emphasis on drills and other exercises to develop stamina, core strength and control. The sessions will also include vocabulary and concepts unique to the Suhaila Salimpour Format.

Previous experience in the format is required for this workshop.

I was going to be editing a few songs to settle on one to start working up choreography for (so that when I *can* make it to class that I'll be at least partially up to snuff).

How long do you think this should be for us first-timers? I was thinking around a two minute performance for something of medium to faster tempo and perhaps slightly longer if I choose a slower more lyrical song.

What do you think - or anyone else since this tribe has PLENTY of members? *pokes you guys*

Suhaila Salimpour Format - Technique Intensive
@ The Drum & Dance Learning Center, Bordentown, New Jersey
*Taught by Kim Leary (Alexia), Certified Level 2 Dancer , Suhaila Salimpour Format
