Why this tribe needs to extist

topic posted Sun, April 15, 2007 - 9:10 PM by  Baz
So many of you may have wondered "Why on earth would Lucas have started this tribe?". I mean, there are already so many spinning related tribes out there, why both with this one?
Here's my theory. So we have poi, double staff, double whip, and so on and so forth. We've started cross pollinating the arts, and it's only going to get more blended and muddled.
This tribe explores and celebrates what they all have in common, the geometry (both body and toy) that they necessitate, the dance, the footwork, the interweaving that does not come automatically to single-prop styles. One might say that this commonality is what *allows* such blending between the arts to occur in the first place.
I, for one, hope that this tribe gives rise to new cross disciplinary brainstorming. I hope this tribe promotes ideas that don't belong in Tech Poi or Double Staff and Polystickery. I hope this tribe is not redundant.
That's my story. Why are *you* here?

Okay, Okay I am a little of a dual prop hater so please rise to this challenge and prove me wrong by wildfire.

So, we've talked abouthis on the contact staff tribe a little.

I don't really buy this dual prop stuff yet. I've seen rif and agree he's a great performer with the crutch or whatever is in his hands but I think that dual propping is silly, unless you can develop technique that is exclusive to the use of dual props in conjuction.

what I mean, if you watch out christmas video or lucas's vid, we do double staff moves
(well I do a buttfy antispin) poi moves (I saw a corkscrew in Lucases vid) and we do moves that ( i am not really using this word) hybridize the two styles, like the poi antispin and the staff antispin. (which I think we both do )

The challenege is to create technique that is exclusive to mixed props (i.e. poi and staff) not borrowed from one art or completely hybridized of two.

if you can't figure out something like that I'd say stick to fundamental props....

Technique that gives a different comprehendable effect to an audience...

Or you know ignore me ; )

Ahh a good example comes from rif. Not saying that the move is always pretty, he whips a staff with the poi and does a strange flow wand dancey thing.. with a staff hooked onto a poi and it is different, new.... does that make sense?

btw, sorry basil I basically said what you said. Ima dope.

I didn't realize we were talking about "mixed" props. I was just thinking about what having 2 poi in your hands has in common with having 2 staffs in your hands, or 2 fire fans, or 2 torches or 2 flame whips. How body language and tool tech is similar and different when switching from one to the other. How can you say you hate "dual props" when you spin poi?

For example, I recently fell in love with the samoan fire knife videos that were posted. I want to figure out how to put that kind of dance style with poi, or if it is even possible. This would be the tribe to discuss it.

odd because isn't lucas's video of mixed props?

and for the pupose of this tribe... O....now i get it.

it can be about mixed, it can be about transfering moves over from one toy too another..... why limit yourself to anything when you can expand and create new ideas. i don't get it :)

I agree with Lucas in that this should go beyond combining props, and further into the world of hybridizing techniques and toys.

example: I am primarily a hooper, but I also spin poi, I have integrated poi moves into hooping.

this video is a year old so I have gotten a little better but here it is poi style hooping in the first minute or so: www.youtube.com/watch

nice video, i like how for the first minute you don't even use reg hoop moves. thanks for posting it.

i've actually started thinking about doing hoop, a year ago no way would i even think of thinking about it but here i go..... but i've seen too many awesome hoopers the last couple of months and i think hoop and contact staff moves would blend together nicely.

And have you noticed how many hoop moves are reaaaally close to contact staff moves? I mean, a hoop is just a*really* curved staff. (And poi are just really flexible torches. And torches are just double staffs with only one wick lit.)

the fundamental basis I feel is the number of points and how they are connected contribute to how an objkect can be manipulated.

like doubles 2 paors of 2 points connected, poi two not connected , staff two connected...

the hoop is a special case..... a circle.. with no exposed points...

4 ball palm spinning is like four points not connected....

                        I dunno....
