Hi All! I'm having a heck of a time finding the right replacement head to fit my GEF dumbek. I've tried Remo's heads and they did not fit, and I haven't seen any others that look like they would fit. The metal rim is quite narrow on the head that came with the drum. The head was a GEF head. I'll try to post a pic of the head. The diameter of the top of the head is approx 8 9/16". The diameter of the bottom of the head, from outside edge of metal ring is just under 9 1/4". The depth of the metal ring is somewhere between 3/16" and 1/4". If anyone has any tips for locating the head I need, I'd be very grateful!
Thanks so much!
Yvonne

Re: Need Help Finding Right Dumbek Head
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 12:26 PMTry contacting these people here:
www.nileshop.net/store/nil...ewItem.asp
They don't list the heads on their website, but they have a very good and inexpensive package deal for GEF heads that will fit your drum. You must send an inquiry.
Mid-East Mfg. also stocks these heads as do www.activemusician.com
You want either a GEF or an Alexandria head measuring 8 5/8".
Good luck

Re: Need Help Finding Right Dumbek Head
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 2:59 PMThanks for the tip Jeffrey. Do you know....is shipping really expensive via nileshop? Would the item be coming directly from Egypt?
As for activemusician.com....I ordered the size I needed from them, and although the diameter was just fine, the depth of the metal ring was too big. That's my big problem....the depth of the metal ring.
Thanks much!

Wed, April 23, 2008 - 1:51 PMSphinxshop has GEF drums/spares direct from the factory.
www.sphinxshop.com/drumhead.htm
I've had no problems buying normal and "Raquy" sized heads from him (even though he doesn't list the Raquy size on his web site, just email him...)

Wed, April 23, 2008 - 3:01 PMHi "fungus" -- Thanks for your input. Does sphinxshop.com sell heads that look like the one in the photo I posted? I'm having a heck of a time in regard to the depth of the metal ring.....mine is very shallow.
Thanks!

Re: Need Help Finding Right Dumbek Head
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 5:42 AMPS: It's worth getting a few extra heads. Accidents happen ... and there's always a chance that one won't tune up perfectly (they're hand made).

Re: Need Help Finding Right Dumbek Head
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 2:20 PMThe new Remo Skyndeep head (8 5/8) should fit like a charm on your GEF doumbek. You'll have to use a hairdryer to stretch the head a bit so the outside rim is even with the bearing edge. As Jeff noted, you can get them at a good price ($17.00 plus shipping ) from www.activemusician.com. -

Re: Need Help Finding Right Dumbek Head
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 3:04 PMHi Peter -- Thanks much for your input. I'm not new around here....it's just been awhile! Work has been keeping me busy.
I already tried a Skyndeep head from activemusician. Diameter was fine, but depth of metal ring on head (not sure what it's called), was too deep, such that I could not tighten the head assemply. I've posted a pic of the head that fits, if you want to check it out. I need a shallow ring. Do they have these now?
Thanks!

Re: Need Help Finding Right Dumbek Head
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 3:40 PMThe Nile Shop, The Sphinx Shop and Egypt Cart are all the same business and you will get essentially the same prices from each of them. It is the three partners that operate out of GEF and it looks better to have three different businesses out of Egypt (quite smart actually), so you will be getting the very heads that are made for your drum from either of them.

Re: Need Help Finding Right Dumbek Head
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 7:14 PMOne thing you could do to make the Skyndeep fit is to pull apart the busted GEF head. Underneath the foil you'll find a ring that can be used as a spacer around the Skyndeep head that might allow it to be used.

Wed, April 23, 2008 - 2:26 PMYvonne, I emailed you, but you seem to be new and might not know you have an email. I've got a bunch of brand new standard GEF heads. Email me an address and I'll drop one in the mail for you. No problems

Re: Need Help Finding Right Dumbek Head
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 9:57 AMYvonne,
Essam at Sphinx Shop is a decent person to deal with. Just send email and request the heads you need. The drum head in your pic looks like the standard GEF head but they do have a few different sizes. You will need to measure the outer rim (not the hoop) of your drum. Just remove the hoop and measure outer edge of the rim. You should have something that is approx one of these sizes:
8' = "Raquy" size (does anyone know if the 4 luggers have a special name?)
8 5/8' = Standard Tabla Size
9' = Sumbati
10 1/4 Dohola
Essam has the heads in stock or can get them quickly. They are shipped from Egypt directly to you in about a weeks time. I have bought heads from Essam and they are are a good deal.
Having said that the quality of the heads are not consistent as they are hand made a la sweat shop. They may fit too tight and you might have to stretch them with a hair dryer or use a towel and clothing iron as you tighten down the hoop. There are a few good threads already on the topic of installing a new head and tuning so you might want to do a search for those.
And how did your head get that huge rip in it? It looks like someone hit it with angle iron <g>. -

Thu, April 24, 2008 - 5:03 PM8' = "Raquy" size (does anyone know if the 4 luggers have a special name?)
Well...there's absoulutely no reason on Earth why anyone would want to own any 4 lug drum other than the Raquy Signature Dumbek! xoxox

Re: Thanks Everyone!
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 4:26 PMI bought my normal-size drum and now two packages of drum heads from him (for my Sumbati and Raquy). He was always very helpful and correct.
Shipping from Egypt isn't the cheapest, but the products are all top quality ... (I suspect he hand-picks the drums from the factory)
