Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has purchased one of Raquy's 6-peg dumbeks and has fit a Remo SKYNDEEP head on it successfully?
The drums are made by EGY GAWHARA, so if anyone has one of his drums with a Remo head fitted on it, I'd like to get an idea that it can be done.
Could you please note the size of the Remo drumhead you purchased and the size of the drum you fit it to? (4-peg, 6-peg, or original drum head dimensions would be helpful).
Cheers

Re: Any luck with SKYNDEEP Heads on Raquy's signature dumbeks?
Mon, October 12, 2009 - 11:09 AMI put one on my wife's 4 peg drum and it works fine! It was an 8inch head.
The bass note on it is in between a C & D as far as tuning. I think it supposed to be tuned higher, but it is tuned as high as we can get it and I it sounds great to me.

Re: Any luck with SKYNDEEP Heads on Raquy's signature dumbeks?
Thu, October 15, 2009 - 6:43 AMI put a Skyndeep on my 4-peg Raquy a couple of weeks ago. It fit well and tuned to about a C (doum) which was definitely OK but a bit dull sounding. As I had cranked the head as tight as I thought I could without stripping some threads, I tried ripping the old mylar head off its metal ring and placing that over the ring of the new head. I cranked that baby up to a C#, and it had a really nice crisp tec with a little ring to it and a solid doum. Unfortunately, at that point the head was still about an 8th to a 16th of an inch below the rim. Now I'm experimenting with nylon cord. I think an 8th in. diameter cord will work but I don't have one at the moment. Fasten the ends together with some cloth adhesive tape. This seems to be pretty much what Remo has for its Clown Vomit drum (sorry Remo, thats the name that sticks with me -- I actually think its a pretty good drum). -

Re: Any luck with SKYNDEEP Heads on Raquy's signature dumbeks?
Sat, October 17, 2009 - 7:35 AMHey Eureka! Inside that piece crimped metal crap on the outside of the Raquy mylar head is medium thickness incomplete (think C) metal ring. I pried that out with a screwdriver and a fair amount of bad language (I recently undid a few months of practice by mashing my finger in my garage door so I'm getting kinda sensitive to unanticipated damage to my tec finger), and placed it over the ring on the skyndeep head (i.e. under the rim of the drum). There is a gap of an inch or so between the two ends of the "ring." I don't know if this will have a deleterious effect over the long run but I did put tape over the sharpish ends placed the rim over the ring. The drum is about half way between C# and D with the head pretty much flush with the rim. And it sounds real good.

Thu, October 15, 2009 - 2:53 PMif you want a good custom shim ring, look at chain-link fence tension wire. It is quite easy to bend to diameter by hand. I cut mine with bolt cutters.

Re: Any luck with SKYNDEEP Heads on Raquy's signature dumbeks?
Mon, October 19, 2009 - 7:47 PMI know a guy who put a skyndeep on his 6-bolt GEF a few weeks ago and it worked fine. The Raquy is just a standard GEF (I think).
I've been thinking about putting one on my 4-bolt but the whole need-to-shim business bothers me. Getting it to just the right height is important.
The nylon cord thing sounds easy but how do you tie the ends securely so that there's no knot on one side of the ring?

Re: Any luck with SKYNDEEP Heads on Raquy's signature dumbeks?
Tue, October 20, 2009 - 7:49 AMThe best way I've found to join the two ends of the cord with minimum diameter change is to cut the cord to a length where the two ends just meet around the circumference of the skin, and over the metal hoop, ie., to the same circumference as the metal hoop. Then, cut a piece of white cloth trainers' tape, an inch wide and two inches long, and lay it flat on a table sticky side up. Then, join the ends of the cord with your fingers and lay them length wise down one edge of the tape. Roll the cord into the tape, smoothing the wrinkles as you go.
Takes a little practice to get it smooth, but practice is what we're used to, right? :-) -

Tue, October 20, 2009 - 3:22 PMThanks, Elissa. If anything, improvising is what I'm best at. If it works for you, just buy me a Guiness if ever we meet!
Brilliant!

Sun, October 25, 2009 - 5:00 PMI've used a little duct tape to join the ends of a piece of copper electrical wire. You can buy several different gauges of wire and experiment to get the right fit.

Tue, October 27, 2009 - 7:32 AMI have a 4 peg Raquy signature drum- my friend Jeff installed the REMO Skyndeep for me a few years ago & it's still a superstar instrument! Woo hoo! Re: Any luck with SKYNDEEP Heads on Raquy's signature dumbeks?
Tue, October 27, 2009 - 9:20 AMWith their Ergo doumbeks (that come installed with Skyndeep), Remo supplies a simple cord cut to the length of the diameter. In the instructions it says that this can be used as a "shim" to enable further tightening of the head. Haven't had to use it yet, but will if necessary. I know this is what you all have been talking about, I just thought I would mention the cord, because it is a softer option than metal wire, which I would personally be a little scared to use. Wire is probably an even better solution than cord, though, but I thought I would mention it anyway.
(BTW- I sell Skyndeeps on my website, please click on my profile for the link. International customers welcome.) -

Re: Any luck with SKYNDEEP Heads on Raquy's signature dumbeks?
Tue, October 27, 2009 - 9:47 AMmy friend Brian thought of using the chord to a law trimmer (aka "weed whacker"), but I had also thought that maybe you can make a rim out of that rubber stamping material. It might be better since it is softer and more flexible. You would have to trace it and cut it out yourself, but it is a thought. -

Wed, October 28, 2009 - 10:04 AM"law trimmer"?
As a barrister, I take umbrage at that!!
Actually, weedwhacker cord might just be a great idea. Nylon cord gets a little mushy and shifts sometimes. Wire would be fine, but weedwhacker cord might just be the best. -

Re: Remo supplies a simple cord...
Sun, November 1, 2009 - 6:51 AMWhat sort of "nylon cord" do they use?
What diameter? How hard/soft?
There's dozens of types.
Could somebody upload a pic of it? -

Re: Remo supplies a simple cord...
Tue, November 10, 2009 - 7:48 AMI had to shim a head on my drum a while back and used a leather cord just taped the end together set it in and tuned. It has worked fine for the last year or so
