I noticed that the crown is listed as being 3/4"... however, from the bottom of the hoop to the top of the head, the one I received measures 1-1/8" (9/8) tall -- that's obviously considerably more than 3/4". Can anyone with this same head (Mid-East Mfg. # SD08) confirm this measurement? The head almost looks like it's made for a bongo, since it has such a high collar.

Also, has anyone purchased, or attempted to purchase, the following REMO head:
...it [presumably] looks to be the same as the 9" SkynDeep Fish-Skin graphic model, just with a calfskin print. ?? Not that the fish-skin design looks all too bad, but I'd be open to using a more neutral looking skin like this on one of my drums.

Hello Everyone,
I read many of your interesting posts on purchasing a drum. Although I have played for over 20 years I still haven't found a drum I truly cherish, but then again I have never tried a number of the ones mentioned here. (GeF, Houssam, Simbati, Kevork etc,)

Originally I started playing in the late 1970's using the ceramic drums from Syria with goat skin heads. They were tortuous to play and a lot of hassle with keeping them in tune. I was playing with kanoun player, George Sawa at the Sultan's Tent in Yorkville. We used to use plugged in light bulbs mounted on coat hangers and placed inside the shell to keep the skin tight. One time I had the opportunity to borrow a Egyptian drum with fish skin head. It was a beauty! Years later I purchased a "Alexandria" drum from dancer Lynette Harper. It was a very comfortable drum to play but still not great clarity of highs and lows.

Prior to producing my DVD "The Art of Arabic Drumming" I was given a few Meinl drums. They have great tone and projection but I found them quite uncomfortable to play for long periods. As a result I sent Meinl some ideas on modifying these drums. I am not sure if there has been any changes to date. Here are a list of specification I use when ordering a drum. I hope you find this helpful and perhaps you can add to the list so we can all benefit.

Specifications for Middle Eastern Drum:

RIM & SHELL

No space greater than 1mm between the rim and the shell. (A space between the rim and the shell can be uncomfortable for the left hand as the skin is pinched between the edges). Ensure the rim is exactly the same diameter as the shell where they meet. (If either is larger in diameter, it creates a sharp edge that presses into the left hand) The drum surface should be smooth all around.

SCREWS

Only 6 screws, more is not advantageous. They should be recessed and not protrude beyond the drum surface. Screws should turn easily and not be stripped or frozen.

DIMENSIONS

Height-16"-171/2", Width-10 1/2"-11", Head/Skin Diameter-8 1/2", Weight- Not greater than 4kg

FINISH

Nice looking drum, smooth finish, possible mosaic pattern, but pearl inlaid is not necessary nor preferred since the finish will often crack

if you ever have the opportunity to do either, i highly recommend it. as a teacher, for how well travelled and distinguished she is, raquy is incredibly approachable, humble, and an overall great instructor. we'd love to make it to one of her dumbek retreats in the summer, but not this year though.

as a group, the cavemen put on one rockin' show. so tight, very entertaining, & completely inspiring to revisit my fundamentals, and spend time on what i skipped over (slow continuous finger rolls- for example) as a novice to work towards being that smooth, fast, & controlled.

WHITE Wide Neck Ceramic Dumbek [Mid-East # CDWP-WH]

The problem? NOBODY has them. Mid-East is out-of-stock with CDNP-WH (for upwards of 6 months potentially), and the CDWP-WH seems to have been discontinued (as there's no longer a listing for them on Mid-East's website).

For my purposes, the WIDE neck model would probably work a bit better size-wise, although I'd be open to getting either one at this point. This dumbek will be incorporated into a drumset, where I've already got a stand positioned for it. All of the other drums in the kit are solid white, so naturally I want things to match up nicely.

My question is... can anyone help? If you happen to have a SOLID WHITE dumbek available for sale [preferably standard sized, or larger], please contact me A.S.A.P. by sending either a PM or an email!

The head was a GEF head. I'll try to post a pic of the head. The diameter of the top of the head is approx 8 9/16". The diameter of the bottom of the head, from outside edge of metal ring is just under 9 1/4". The depth of the metal ring is somewhere between 3/16" and 1/4".
As Sidqi says, "Souhail is the ultimate dancer's drummer. His drum solos are some of the best I've ever heard. That's why he has been in demand at Mendocino Middle Eastern Music & Dance Camp as both a teacher and performer for so many years!"

This is your chance to study with him here without buying a plane ticket!

I have a GeF simbati and my father is due to visit my sis in the big apple and am tempted to ask him to bring a skyndeep head back with him but there is an issue as to what size ? I've read on certain threads about 8 3/4 " being squeezed on to a simbati, a 9" head being suitable for a GeF simbati etc, etc, but I've measured the GeF replacement head I got with the simbati and it measures 9.5 ". Is it me or by some magical trick a smaller size head, by some half inch, will fit on my simbati. Can anyone give me the magic spell !!!!!!!!!!

Besides New York, Genf, and Nairobi here is the fourth United Nations Office. Vienna is a centre for classical music since the times of Mozart and Beethoven. And we got a lot of art collections in huge museums. The stuff is very impressing. And it is stolen. From all over the place. During 600 years of Habsburg empire. That is a shame I think.

E.g. in Vienna is the largest collection of papyrus from ancient Egypt. Because it is material it cannot be in Cairo at the same time.

Music is not material. It can be anywhere at the same time. It is like light from a candle. You can give this light to otherones without making your candle smaller. That is a big advantage.

Arts is part of culture. So is music. As it is part of culture it is part of identity of people. People want to be treated with respect.

Nothing to do with The Band of Big Pink fame, it's about an Egyptian policeman's orchestra that goes to the wrong city in Israel. If you have Dumbek Fever, you will enjoy this -- a dumbek case is seen in a few scenes, with all the other instrument cases that are schlepped along. But it isn't the last scene that we hear a rhythm that we will all recognize. Good photography, acting, and comic turns (remember roller disco??), plus nostalgic reminders of how important music can be in people's lives.

I've read good things about the Remo Ergo and the Gawharet el Fan drums, but the mother-of-pearl on the GeF's has put me off those. Does anyone have any recommendations on choosing a good quality basic drum that suits those criteria? Also, if anyone knows some of these materials to be synthetic (e.g. the GeF's mother-of-pearl) that information would be very helpful.

after a month I still can't get the little patch of glue off. only thing I have tried besides scraping with my finger nail was warm water and a terry washrag. all i managed to do was spread the glue around some.
I have gotten all sorts of advise from non drummers about alcohol, acetone, nail polish remover. I do not want to damage the head. took me about a year to find the right drum.
any suggestions from people who have actually done this?

It's basically just four snaps of the fingers without a drum: Right index - Left Index - Right ring - Left ring.

Do it nice and slow; it's and exersize, not a roll. Make sure that each snap is nice and crisp, and as loud as you can make it. The index fingers should be just as loud as the ring fingers. Keep a nice even meter. It will take time, but if you do it quite a bit, in a month or two your index finger will be very strong. After a while, you'll be able to do it very fast and clean; you'll be surprised how it'll affect your sound on the drum.

I'm drumming about 2 hours a day running thro' the dvd from the execises thro to the point where I left it the day before then learning a new part of the next rhythm. I then practice my hand rolls, pops, slaps and try to crisp up my hits then try to mix up a couple of rhythms and increase my speed. Is this the right way to go ?

Dear people,

best regards to ya all! I write here for the first time so just to say smth about myself.
I am from Croatia, Europe, one of the republics of former Yugoslavia.
I (am trying to) play doumbek for past three years, but the periods of not practicing were so long that it always
brought me back to the begining. And it all started when my capoeira friends bought me a turkish darabuka for my burthday knowing i love
anything that makes a rhythm. And there the love begins :) <3

So... now I have decided to take it really seriously because I just love this instrument! And as someone said on this tribe somewhere - it's better to play 15 minutes a day, than two hours once a week :) So i stick with that.

Now I have an Istanbul doumbek which i practice on, but am interested in buying some good quality instrument, and there goes the problem - i don't know what it is?!?

With my Istanbul doumbek I have problems tuning it, the drills and the what's it called (things that hold the head and the body of the drum together... and it's not the kneck hehhe!) are not aligned, all in all, if u look at the head on my doumbek it looks crapy, but somehow playable.

Now - I have two chances - in the sommer planing to go to Egypt and in the spring to go the Germany. Someone here mentioned Meinl doumbeks being his favorite now, that they are very well made with precision and perfect at tuning. And i heared here people having certain "problems" with that on Gaf doumbeks.

I need an advice - this time i have the money to buy better quallity, so what is it? Meinl or GaF?
And is the price here realy mirroring the quality? Please please please expiriances!

These instruments I had in mind (being aware that picture doesn't mean a thing:
http://meinlpercussion.com/products/meinl_percussion/doumbeks/aluminum.html
or
http://meinlpercussion.com/products/meinl_percussion/doumbeks/copper_hand_engraved.html

or
GaF from Egyptcart.

Thanks in advance for all the suggestions or advices :)

Wish ya all the best rhythms :)
Marina
also, i am probably going to put a skyndeep head on it. the outer dimension of the bearing edge is right at 8 5/8". in going through the various threads about those heads i have seen conflicting advice, some saying go with the 8 5/8, others saying the 8 23/32. any of you with drums measuring right at 8 5/8 who have put skyndeep heads on, what worked for you?

Respects...
You might see this letter cross-posted all over the place. I wish to reach the widest community possible and your understanding is appreciated. Should you know someone who might benefit from this information, please pass it along.

I apologize that it has been a while since I last wrote. This past BIRDS festival was a smashing success. Thanks to everyone who participated in making it a most memorable event.

There are some fantastic pictures posted on-line for all to see. These pictures are from the two evening concerts and have been provided by Eric Willison, President of the Mill Valley Cultural Arts Umbrella (www.millvalleyarts.org); click on the BIRDS link under the Latest News banner. We will be posting many of these on the BIRDS’ site shortly. If anyone took pictures during the Saturday street fair, we are looking for new photos for the website. You will receive proper photo credit and a link to your web page, should you have one and wish a link.

On to other matters, John Millen has informed me that he wishes to step down as president of the board, after many years of dedicated service to the festival. I congratulate John on his extensive commitment and dedication to the community. He has expressed his desire to continue serving on the board in a sort of emeritus capacity. Institutional memory is vital to the success of any organization.

So where does this leave BIRDS? Well, to put on a festival that can reach a maximum potential public requires people who can work together to create the event. We need people who have fundraising & grant writing experience. Additionally, we need people who have skills in promotion & marketing…audio, photo & video production… programming & logistics... community education, etc. We are looking for imagination, innovation and creative problem solving.

This is a tall task!!! However, it cannot be done successfully by just a few people. This is especially true when taking into account that everyone has a life outside BIRDS: i.e. work, school, family and other obligations. BIRDS is a community-based organization that needs a strong community behind it.

Now, to next topic: the BIRDS’ Board. I am announcing that there are six to ten openings for new board members. We are looking for people who want to be community builders and who wish to influence the future direction of the Baltimore International Rhythm Festival. The board needs people who can do all those items I addressed above, plus bookkeeping and general office assistance.

There are no limits to the possibilities that can be accomplished if we work together. That said, it is important for everyone to realize that for BIRDS to move forward we need people to step up and take on these various tasks.

The beauty of this is that no one will be asked to do anything outside their expertise. If we can get enough folks to become involved, then no one will have to work too hard and much more will get accomplished. It is truly up to the community to decide the direction of the organization. It should never reflect just one point of view, but many.

Well, there you have it. I am challenging everyone to get involved. It’s now up to all of us to make this wonderful organization achieve its fullest potential.

Aleichem Shalom…

Is there are difference in the sounds of the drums? And finally, which would be a good size, i want one big enough to go under my arm on my lap, and have a big enough doom, would a 10" head be appropriate?

I have an Alexandria doumbek, a regular starting doumbek, which is nice, but we here are trying to go into "arabic-andalucian" music, so I need a sound more "warm". I think it would be nice a Ceramic or Wooden Doumbek, with Goatskin, Fishkin or something alike. If you were able to recommend me some kinds of Doumbeks it would be really great! (Also some price references, please!)

What about Daveed´s doumbek? I also heard about Antonio Gamez doumbeks, are they good?

Thanks guys, I don´t post offen, but I read you all the time ;)

Cheers!

Hello,

I've started learning the dumbek in the past few months, and I've got two drums, a standard-size Alexandria aluminum with mylex head and a djembe that's exactly the same size. First comment/ question: does anyone else practice on a djembe of that size? I have to be honest with you, it seems to sound really good even playing it as if it were a dumbek - slaps, finger rolls, snaps seem to work just fine and the tek and kas sound high-pitched and echoey - the dums sound deep and nice as well.

Second, I want to replace my Alexandria with something nicer (aside from that djembe, of course :-) ); I can't get it in tune no matter what I do, I've read all the forum messages on the topic and changed the head, my conclusion is that there's some irregularity. Moreover I've wasted enough time already trying to repair it, so, time for an upgrade. Will Gawharet el Fan drums from egyptcart or sphynxshop be guaranteed against this irregularity? Are there any places (I know of no good shops in NYC, where I live) that you'd recommend?

Thanks!

I owned an egyptian-style doumbek for some years. Recently I had to discard it since its porous aluminium rim got broken. Now that a year has passed, I'm thinking of buying another doumbek again, but now I'm doubious about purchasing an egyptian or turkish-style one. When visiting music shops in my hometown I've tried turkish ones sometimes, and they tend to be lighter, smaller and cheaper than egyptian ones, but I'm not sure if they are really easier to play.

The question is, could anyone tell me if, concerning playing, there are major differences between them? Curiously, in youtube most of the turks do play egyptian style drums. Is it worth purchasing another new egyptian dumbek?.

Thanks a lot.
