Re: Welcome!
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 9:55 AMHello! I'm Elizabeth (aka Lis to Indisch familie). Nice to meet you all and find others of the same cultural background. I posted pics of my parents way back....circa 1920's. Ya, I'm old. Here is a link to my family's homepage with lots of cultural information history & links. The website is in English (thank goodness!), my Dutch isn't what it used to be especially when it comes to reading. www.coert.org/index.html

Re: Welcome!
Fri, July 29, 2005 - 11:25 AMThat's Jan Boon, the famous Indo writer.
He worked and wrote under the pseudonym Tjalie Robinson (his Indo persona), and under the pseudonym Vincent Mathieu (his Dutch persona). He worked tirelessly for years as Tjalie Robinson to maintain the Indo culture. He founded Tong Tong magazine now called Moesson which is the best Indo cultural magazine I know of.
Perhaps his best know book is "Piekerans van een Straatslipper" (Broodings of an Iddler), which I haven't seen in translation. Some of his writings as Vincent Mathieu i.e. The Hunt for the Heart are available from Oxford University Press. I think this work is hard to find Stateside although I've seen it in some book stores, but you can get it through Moesson.
Here are some links.

Tue, September 12, 2006 - 2:56 AMYour geneology website is impressive ! I'm in the midst of writing a family book with old photos for all my nieces and nephews.
I particularly like the old Indische wedding photos in Indonesia. My folks married during the war and my mom created her own wedding dress as materials were scarce, she modeled her head dress after my dad's military hat. -

Re: Welcome!
Sun, October 15, 2006 - 9:46 PMThat's a great idea, it's so important to preserve our unusual cultural heritage. I went to the Holland America market a couple of weeks ago and they are really cutting back on the stock. They don't have krente brot and other things we love and the lady (can't remember her name) said "well the younger generations aren't keeping their culture." I don't know about that, but I think we've certainly been watered down with a lot of American culture.
