Aloha and thanks for creating this tribe!
I'm getting ready for a tie dye session in a couple of weeks (cotton onesies with Procion dye) and thought I should wash all the stuff first to get any sizing/finishing out of the fabric. I am wondering if there is anything I should or should not add to the wash water (pretty sure I should not use fabric softener).
Any tips?
Thanks!

Re: The Basics - prep work...
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 12:51 PMjust a mild soap.
I use synthapol because it has no brighteners, softeners, fragrances.
don't use bleach.
you're good to go. -

Re: The Basics - prep work...
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 1:47 PMI always wash with synthrapol. Even so called PFD fabrics can have stuff on the surface that interferes with the dye process. -

Re: The Basics - prep work...
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 1:49 PMsometimes I add a bit of synthrapol in my bath dyes, esp if the fabric is tightly knit or fabrics like rayon which can get stiff/paper like when wet. -

Re: The Basics - prep work...
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 2:13 PMWhile we're talking about Synthrapol - I noticed on Dharma's site that they have a non-toxic alternative to synthrapol. Have either of you used this alternative, or should I stick to the Synthrapol?
{thanks again for this tribe miyo. so cool!}

Re: The Basics - prep work...
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 2:52 PMthanks!
most of my posts are still at reconstructed clothing.
need to transfer, re-edit, etc.
it'll take me months but i want to really get some clear instructions and basics of dyeing up eventually...........
hum... why not try it?
I get my synth by the gallons, so I never notice other alternatives.
most of my chemicals/dyestuffs are industrial quantity orders. -

Re: The Basics - prep work...
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 3:02 PMOne of these days I should check out the reconstucted clothing tribe ; )
I think I will go for the Dharma detergent. Here's a link if you'd like to check it out:
www.dharmatrading.com/html/en...AA.shtml
That pages explains why they developed it. : ) kind of a funny reason...
Cheers!
