I've recently began to think a bit more seriously about a business idea I toyed with a while back. I've just attempted a reading but I think I'm too burnt out from all the research... I'm really struggling to interpret the cards. Was wondering if anyone wanted to have a go at interpreting them for me, or draw some cards for me if you prefer? I really could do with some guidance. I don't often use reverse meanings myself, but in this reading I must've held the pack upside down because all but one of the cards were upside down. Not sure what, if anything, that means. I'll put *s before and after the one that was in the upright position. It was just a simple past, present, future spread:
PAST: STRENGTH THE EMPEROR KING OF CUPS
PRESENT: ACE OF WANDS KING OF SWORDS **FIVE OF WANDS**
FUTURE: TEN OF COINS NINE OF WANDS FOUR OF SWORDS
Thanks in advance to any of you that reply to this :)

Re: Can anyone help me interpret this reading, or do a reading for me, please?
Thu, September 24, 2009 - 5:32 PMwell, reversals can be read in a number of different ways, or you can choose to ignore them and just read the cards without any added "spin" on them. if you're just starting out, it's probably easier to simply focus on the basic meanings of the cards and not try to get too fancy until you have a bit more experience.
people often say not to read for yourself but I think it can be done, it's just different.
I would say that nine cards is kinda a lot for a first reading. you can start with just two or three cards and get a lot out of it. if this reading makes no sense to you at all, then consider setting it aside and doing a new reading with fewer cards. just pull one for each category, and interpret it the best you can before pulling the next card. having a notebook to write things down in really helps as you are learning, and it will be cool to be able to go back and look at old readings in the future - I am sometimes amazed at things that I didn't notice in a reading at the time, but which make perfect sense looking back.
it's also perfectly ok to look things up in books or online, I do it frequently in my practice to add depth to my understanding of what I've read in a reading. whether I'm reading for myself or for someone else I wait until after the reading to do this kind of further research - but it can be very illuminating.
I'd say, keep working with the cards and it will become easier and more intuitive the more you do it. I like to pull a card for the day and think about that card throughout the day, and how it relates to my experiences. -

Re: Can anyone help me interpret this reading, or do a reading for me, please?
Fri, September 25, 2009 - 8:22 AMYeah, I am a total noob, so thanks for the input :) Sometimes I feel like I'm "in the zone" and can intuitively get a surprising amount of information from the cards (they predicted a love interest of mine getting back with her ex for example), and other times I just stare at them blankly thinking "what the hell is this all about?" I particularly struggle with the minor arcana, since I don't know much about numerology and after looking into it, I realised that there is no universal numerological system - there are different ones for different cultures - and to be honest, numerology just doesn't really sit well with me. I think symbols, whether in a dream or on a card or whatever, have common interpretations, but that the most important meaning is what they mean personally to the individual, and to be honest on the whole numbers don't mean much to me personally (except for certain times when they're particularly relevant to a situation). I've devised my own form of divination which involves randomly generating images, quotes and wikipedia articles, which I find much easier to get meaning from, but I don't want to just stick with the easiest way, and would like to get more adept with tarot cards, too. It was a dream that led me to taking an interest in tarot and I feel there was a reason for it. -

Re: Can anyone help me interpret this reading, or do a reading for me, please?
Fri, September 25, 2009 - 11:59 AMwell, if numbers don't speak to you, then don't get too hung up on them, and just look at the images on the card and interpret that way. each suit has its inherent symbolic meaning (cups = emotions - all emotions, not just love; wands = creativity, magic, growth; pentacles = earth, hearth, bread, the physical world and swords = the intellect, logic) so keeping this framework in mind, look at what the picture says.
after you've been working with the cards for a while, you will start to see similarities between the numbered cards. once you get more comfortable with reading, if you want to learn about the relationships with numbers, there are entire books about this subject alone. but you do not have to know all that esoteric stuff to get perfectly good readings, and trying to remember a bunch of stuff you memorized can get in the way of actually *reading* when you are first starting out, IMHO.
sometimes if it just makes no sense to you, you just need to put it aside for a while. it's best not to keep bugging the tarot about the same question or it will become cranky and say things that may not be very nice. -

Re: Can anyone help me interpret this reading, or do a reading for me, please?
Sat, September 26, 2009 - 10:20 AMWell the numbers are as important as the suit, so you will need to interpret them really, to get an accurate reading. Just use your reference as you do for all the other symbols in the pack. You aren't 100% clear on your question though (to me, although I wasn't there) It's probably going to help you to do it again, and be clear in your mind exactly what your question is, say it out loud, repeat or change your mind about how you word it, they are your cards, your question, say as much as you need to.
You mustn't be afraid of them, and I often ask the cards the same question but in a different way over a period of time, so don't worry about how many times you re-do it. You must, really must open and close properly, make sure you know about that as you need to protect yourself in all sorts of ways, but not always from the cards, they are there for you, just be careful what else you let in.
Have another go...

Re: Can anyone help me interpret this reading, or do a reading for me, please?
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 11:42 AMThanks for all your input. I do try to get something from the images, but the minor arcana in my deck are quite lacking in imagery. They do have some - some more than others - but often there is just the number, the suit, and something to symbolise the element associated with that suit. There are exceptions, such as the 3 of swords has 3 swords impaling a heart, but even those are far less rich in symbolism and harder to interpret than the major arcana. I think when I can afford it, I'm going to look for a new deck that has more imagery on the minor arcana, and has a prince and princess or something, instead of a knight and page. At some point I'll design my own, but that's a bit ambitious for now - need to get to grips with Tarot a lot more first!
When you mean open and close do you mean like a banishing ritual?
How do you phrase your questions? How specific do you get? I tend to just think about an issue and ask a vague question about it. -

Re: Can anyone help me interpret this reading, or do a reading for me, please?
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 1:15 PMYou definitely should get a book on the tarot, they are not usually expensive and there must be plenty 2nd hand in thrift shops etc. To open and close is to work with the spirits, meaning when you start you need to be grounded; like visualising roots going into the ground to ground you and above you. It's a very deep subject and I wouldn't do it justice on here really, but every time you take your cards out you are working with spirit. This needs to be acknowledged and dealt with correctly, with respect. When you have done your reading, thank the spirit and energies that have worked with you and make sure you close properly, by saying (can be in your head) something along the lines of the reading is now closed, ask them to leave, there is plenty of interpretations I would guess, I can only go by what feels right for me.
What I am saying is it isn't just you and the cards, you are working alongside and with the assistance of others and they need to be acknowledged and respected and "put away" at the end. I have let in so much stuff into my home by not doing this properly in the past, and not protecting myself. Now, I live in a very very old house and I am sure it isn't just me that calls them in, but by opening and closing properly you are not only protecting yourself but getting the best out of your reading. It all sounds a bit heavy but it's just as important for me as getting to know what your cards mean.
As for the type of questions, be precise, the more vague you are about the questions the more vague the reading will be. For instance don't just ask, "is this a good idea for me?" go into it in your mind before you even cut your cards lay it all out to the cards about your hopes and fears etc, be specific about what it is that is bothering you and why you need the help of the cards.
Sorry, tried to keep it brief but I might have gone on a bit! Good luck, have another go - this is only my opinion I'm giving, please don't do anything if it doesn't feel right for you.
Love and luck
Lorraine

Re: Can anyone help me interpret this reading, or do a reading for me, please?
Sat, October 3, 2009 - 11:01 PMpast (8) strength/(4) emperor/king cups
present ace wands/king swords/five wands rx
future ten pentacles/nine wands/four swords
a past tension between persistence and wanting things to stay the same
this was how your feelings were engaged, king cups
today king swords what you think is going on
what you want ace wands balanced against a sense of being in contention
future ten pentacles how everything will work out for you
nine wands a sense of being resigned to it
four swords your ideas become fixed
the last two cards seem to be sounding a warning
maybe with reference to the ten pentacles
don't get committed to any particular outcome
if you are going to do it, do it because you will enjoy doing it
even if it fails

Tue, October 13, 2009 - 10:11 AMThanks all.
"Do it because you will enjoy doing it even if it fails". I like it... I think that's good advice for most decisions/situations. Good attitude to take :)
