Loyalty to one deck?

One of my friends who has been reading tarot for years was telling me that she maintains loyalty to only one deck even though she owns gazillions. I have been struggling with this. I had been using the Golden Tarot almost exclusively, though have since switched to the Spiral deck (which I am in love with, and have a great rapport with)

However, I really want to start using my Bohemian Gothic deck because I love, love, love it, and feel like I could give alternative readings with it (though I am still in the 'getting to know you' process with this one)

Thoughts? one deck exclusively, or multiple decks??

You are free human. Do whatever you want to do. I just use one deck that is historic as well and have no desire to do otherwise. And I am not usually such a stodgy person. LOL. Who cares what anyone else does? Just do what you want to do. There are no rules to it.

I do tend to do what I want, I was surprised at my friend's assertion, and wondered if that was common. I really respect this woman and value her opinion (she is one of my mentors)

I use different decks for different occasions, depending on what kind of reading I want. Sometimes one tool is better for a job than another. I know people who take the querent in consideration and what their tastes are.

          Yeah. Makes sense to me.

For me, almost no one "out there" even knows I read cards, so reading for someone else is not much of an issue.

              Hey, :)

It's about what works for you. I started with cartomacy, learned it from my Gran who learned it from her motherinlaw. Gran got married in 1907 so most of my original techniques come from the middle of the 19th century *giggle*. I met my first tarot deck in college in a alternative philosophies course...around 1970. I thought "so many more options so many more tools to express my knowings" and tarot has served me well since then as I have served the greater :) sorry I'm getting wordy here. Anyhow, It's what works best for you and your seeker - sometimes I choose the deck - sometimes I ask the seeker to choose. I have many decks and I have my favorite - to me decks have personalities and that must be taken into account. I am a seer so any mode of divination that I use is more fot the seeker than for me to quantify? my sight.

In other words use the method that works best for yu.

              dandy

I have read professionally and used the same set for 15 years. I started on a psychic 900 line while I was still new and inexperienced. I often thought I needed another deck to "see" the things I tended to miss. As if my deck had a short coming of some sort or only dealt with certain issues. As I gained experience I began to realize that my tarot cards weren't lacking in any form, it was my perceptions and understanding.

Funny enough, as much as I have liked and collected other decks, I don't feel I am able to read any except the Merlin, my original choice. I often thought this was a limitation on my behalf but now it is understood as a part of my nature and has provided me with an asset that allows me to focus, complete and in certain fields, develop a "specialty" or talent. (This does not mean a lack of talent or ability for people that read or use multiple mediums.)

What I have learned so far is that each deck is a language for personality types, for each type, the reader and the readie. Some people might need or excel with multiple decks. The deck chosen could be a reading all by it's self and can fulfil multiple purposes. I am certain that the deck will carry an influence, how significant would be circumstantial and relative mostly to the reading.

I often asked myself, "If I have mastered this Tarot set, why would I switch decks and if I haven't mastered this Tarot deck yet, why would change decks?" In this question the one thing I have learned about reading cards is that the cards carry specific messages and deliver the messages in the most efficient and effective fashion, (often efficient beyond my imagination). In other words, the message is usually quite different from what "I" think it will be or it is presented differently. In fact, I'll go as far as to say that the cards understand that people don't always hear what was said or the way it was said and adjust the message so it's "misunderstanding" (denial) is understood...sometimes like an "Idiot Savant".

The real importance in "reading" is not the method, experience level or ability, its the heart and motive of why you want to read.

the idea of "mastering" a deck seems.. unwise to me. like you said, they are characters. in some ways they even have emotions, heh. but they're like good friends, you can know them well... but do you ever really "master" a friend? then why would that be appropriate for a deck?

                  just a thought :)

As alive as tarot may be, it is still inanimate. Personally I regard reading tarot and people as an art...and perhaps your right, it may be something that is never mastered...but then again, if one does not create enough experience to "master" how would they know if it can be done, and just the same, in some cases, mastering a deck might be the same as moving on to another one...

Variety is the spice of life and there is no wrong here. I love my starter deck, it's comfortable. But I also have one that I adore because the symbols help me explore more in depth. As a teacher, I tell my students it isn't the deck, it's how the reader interacts with it. I know one very experienced reader who uses several. Different decks help us explore different depths. Enjoy! That's what life is really all about.

i would suggest two things.... like wearing a pathway in the grass, using a single deck increases our familiarity, etc.
using a different deck i would think, is like stretching the muscles
and as we change and our energies change and our identity changes, it might be natural to be attracted
    to other decks.
soft focus is the way to answer these questions. what feels right?

I agree with Taoe. you want to learn with one deck until you thing you can actually hear it. then you can pick up another to see how similar ideas are expressed differently by another artist.

With me, I've had an immense amount of loyalty to the deck I learned on (Old English Tarot-beautiful deck-though its gotten a lot of criticism from the minor arcana images or lack there of). I only own 3 decks, and use all of them for different readings-one seldom used, one for me only, and one for the readings I have never thought of getting another deck...I suppose I could, but hey-I'm stuck in my ways.

    Cheers.

when i said loyal, i just meant that they work with me well. Perhaps a poor word choice.

I have about 13 decks, and have had a few I no longer have. One deck I recieved acutally from a dream first, and then went out and found it existed, The Moon Garden tarot. Being gay I also love Cosmic Tribe by Stevee Postman.

But my first deck I bought for myself I will always be loyal too, its the only deck I think I own 4 of the same, the Thoth deck (one smaller version, and two which are kind of worn out, and a new one).

Thoth for me too. Although I also own the Tarot of the Ages,. the Tarot of Ceremonial Magick, a Ryder-Waite (the baby deck as readers call it), the New Orleans Voodoo Tarot by my old friend, Sallie Anne, a couple of different Dragon Tarots just for kicks, Morgan Greer, a non-standard Tarot of the Orishas, and the Russian Tarot of St. Petersburg. There are more that I will probably acquire as I am able to afford more decks, but that's about it for now so far as I can remember.

Great topic Kelly! I have so many decks and a lot I don't use or use infrequently. However, I don't stick to one deck. I have some decks I find useful for particular types of readings, some I use the most because I have developed a connection with them and sometimes I have the person I'm reading for choose a deck.
