I'm a newbie to Tarot, but something that has always put off my developmet is having to memorise what all these cards mean etc.
But then I got thinking, where does my intuition come into all of this?
How much should I follow the reading but meanings of the cards, and how much should I let my intuition flow through?

Re: Should we learn or unlearn tarot?
Sun, August 19, 2007 - 10:48 PMI was taught that what you really have to learn is what the suits mean (pentacles-practical and good w/ finances; wands-energetic; cups-sensitive and emotional, nurturing; swords-analytical, communicative), what element and sign they are (pentacles-earth, taurus, virgo, capricorn; wands-fire, aries, leo, sagittarius; cups-water, cancer, scorpio, pisces; swords-air, gemini, libra, aquarius), what the court cards mean (pages-children; knights-young men or women; queens-mature women; kings-mature men), what the card numbers mean (ace-new beginnings, unity; 2-partnership, balance, duality; 3-birth of something, a group, a triad, a triangle; 4-foundation, stability, a square; 5-change, conflict, a five-pointed star(pentagram); 6-balance, harmony, a six-pointed star(hexagram); 7-introspection, a pause; 8-strength, force, near completion; 9-completion, end; 10-transition, change), what the major arcana means (a storybook of the soul's journey through life's spiritual lessons. The Fool, #0, is the soul and the 22 cards are his tests and triumphs until his transcendence beyond them as depicted in the World, #21. The Fool is the Alpha and the Omega of life. He starts out an innocent character and ends a wise one. Having experienced the full gamut of soul experience on this earth, the Fool then embraces the fullness of life. Having gained the wisdom of a sage, he emerges free from the wheel of karma in the last card.), you can also put them in sets of 7 and learn them that way (#1-#7: the soul learning to be conscious in the world, to handle the lessons of duality and matter and learning to control the self; #8-#14: the subconscious mind and spiritual laws underlying life; #15-#21: learning to transcend the world of form. The Fool then merges with the Divine), the Major Arcana also has planets and signs associated with each card (#0-The Fool-Uranus; #1-The Magician-Mercury; #2-The High Priestess-Moon; #3-The Empress-Venus; #4The Emperor-Mars; #5-The Hierophant-Taurus; #6-The Lovers-Gemini; #7-The Chariot-Cancer; #8-Strength-Leo; #9-The Hermit-Virgo; #10-The Wheel of Fortune-Jupiter; #11-Justice-Libra; #12-The Hanged Man-Neptune; #13-Death-Scorpio; #14-Temperance-Sagittarius; #15-The Devil-Capricorn; #16-The Tower-Mars/Uranus; #17-The Star-Aquarius; #18-The Moon-Pisces; #19-The Sun-Sun; #20-Judgment-Pluto; #21-The World-Saturn)
Sorry that this is so long, but hopefully it helps.

YOUR FUTURE RETRIEVED
Copyright © 2007 by Klaudio Zic, all rights reserved. www.lulu.com/astrology
Did you ever fancy a world where wishes come true as future misfortunes are easily predicted as well as annihilated by the positive forces of human mind? Would that not be magick? What a wonderful world it could be!
Would you agree on human beings being influenced by the celestial bodies much as everything is in mutual influence as enmeshed in eternal creation?
Mysterious forces at work frame human fate as unfathomed by astrology. The future is molded in advance by the use of magick1.
We use the organized sky for our precise predictions, the better to counter fate.
Why do we use the real celestial objects and constellations instead of irrational means that flatter the superstitious? It is in our belief that the noble arts of astronomy and astrology were once the same art, both scientific and divine.
Superstition settles in only upon the fall of some great civilisation. The profanation of celestial mathematics results in false zodiacs and mangled astrological imagery. It is a well-known fact that astronomy parted from pseudo-astrology as soon as the alleged astrologers ceased to upgrade their calculations to precession and sound scientific thought. Nowadays astrology is but superstition, the so-called astrological signs having nothing to do with their alleged heavenly counterparts. To state but one blatant example, the sun is still in Libra on November 23rd, albeit the astrologist might not be informed accordingly2.
Futuretrieving succeeds in atuning one's preferred future to one's karma. One would otherwise suffer calamity, whether predicted or not, often on account of bad astrology. Over the past 3000 years much evil was done by influencing people with fase astrology3.
Pseudo-astrologists have brought much harm to humanity and continue toi do so. To mention but a most obvious error, the astrologist's victim is e.g. Told he's a “Scorpio” albeit his natal sun is clearly in Virgo. It is easy to imagine a terrible series of errors that can issue from living a life as based on a false identity.
Besides being mathematically off the mark, the false zodiacal presumptions form a trojan psychological barrier to optimal an life. The academic zodiac and RTRRT help setting one's futurity in a proper perspective by determining one's true natal sky, as well as dissolving the bad transits coming from the future while installing a positive set of events into the future ahead instead of bad expectancy.
The academic zodiac hosts 22 IAU constellations while the present ascendant set distributes 16 constellations over your true eastern horizon. The Night & Day house system matches the 22/16 duo with perfection. This may be the first time that the principles behind your own real natal horoscope are available in comprehensive form. Whether your interest lies in future-changing, astronomy or astrology, the astronomic zodiac and precessed ascendant set will open a new future for you. And don't forget that you can always change your future with the help of the handy RTRRT, your daily magick kit!
It is our fair offer. Nothing less but your real natal sky. It is easy to agree on that.

1Future changing is achieved by inspiration, meditation and the RTRRT. The real time reality rendering tools help molding one's future, whether immediate or distant, into any form, implying freedom of choice.
2Our calculations are based on the NASA ephemerides. Other sources may have been meant for the doubtful entertainment of the superstitious, but are of course not at all authoritative according to the current IAU standards.
3Marriages were broken on account of an e.g. “Neptune in the 7th house: which was in fact in the 6th house of the horoscope. People were told they are “Scorpio” when their natal sun was clearly in Virgo. A woman suffered her “Capricorn” ascendant only to discover it was Pisces rising over her eastern horizon at birth.

Re: Should we learn or unlearn tarot?
Mon, August 27, 2007 - 8:15 AMThanks for that Cindy!
I agree, learning the underlying pattern is much easier and more profound than learning the individual card meanings. Learn numerology and the qualitative meanings of one through ten. Also learn the four elements (and the five elements, which include ether or spirit). Once you know numerology and the elements, you know the minor arcana. The court cards are just permutations of the four elements on themselves.
Astrology helps a lot with understanding the major arcana, but also the order of the major arcana and the images themselves reveal a lot. For the major arcana, I do not use the modern outer planet correspondences. Tarot is very old, so originally the Judgment card would not have been Pluto, for example, since Pluto was only discovered in the 1930's.
Here's how I depart from what Cindy said:
Fool - North Node of the Moon (birth of ego mind, initiating karma)
Hanged One - South Node (death of ego mind, completing karma)
Judgment - Saturn
World - Earth -

Re: Should we learn or unlearn tarot?
Thu, September 6, 2007 - 1:40 PM<Here's how I depart from what Cindy said:>
And here's my version for what it's worth; it's developed from the Golden Dawn attributions.
The Elemental Trumps;
#0, The Fool---Elemental Air. Occult title: The Spirit of the Aethyr.
#12, The Hanged Man--Elemental Water. OT: The Spirit of the Mighty Waters.
#20, Judgment (or the Aeon)--Elemental Fire. The Spirit of the Primal Fire.
(N.B.--There are only three Elemental Trumps because in QBL, Earth is regarded as a composite, not a true element. But for those who want a card for Elemental Earth, #21, The World carries a secondary association to Earth as well as its primary association to the Planet Saturn.)
Planetary Trumps:
#21, The World/Universe--Saturn. The Great One of the Night of Time.
#10, The Wheel of Fortune--Jupiter. The Lord of the Forces of Life.
#16, The Tower--Mars. The Lord of the Hosts of the Mighty.
#19, The Sun--The Sun. The Lord of the Fire of the World.
#3, The Empress--Venus. The Daughter of the Mighty Ones.
#!, The Magus/Juggler--Mercury. The Magus of Power.
#2, The High Priestess--The Moon. The Priestess of the Silver Star.
Zodiacal Trumps:
#4, The Emperor--Aries. The Son of the Morning, Chief Among the Mighty.
#5, The Hierophant--Taurus. The Magus of the Eternal.
#6. Tne Lovers--Gemini. The Children of the Voice, Oracle of the Mighty Gods.
#7, The Chariot--Cancer. The Child of the Powers of the Waters; Lord of the Triumph of Light.
#11, Strength/Lust--Leo. The Daughter of the Flaming Sword.
#9, The Hermit--Virgo. The Prophet of the Eternal; Magus of the Voice of Power.
#8, Justice--Libra. The Daughter of the Lords of Truth; Ruler of the Balance.
#13, Death--Scorpio. The Children of the Great Transformers; Lord of the Gate of Death.
#14, Temperance/Art--Sagittarius. The Daughter of the Reconcilers; Bringer Forth of Life.
#15, The Devil--Capricorn. The Lord of the Gates of Matter; Child of the Forces of Time.
#17, The Star--Aquarius. The Daughter of the Firmament; Dweller Between the Waters.
#18, The Moon--Pisces. The Ruler of Flux and Reflux; Child of the Sons of the Mighty.
These complete the twenty-two Trumps of the Tarot Deck. Each card is associated with one of the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alephbeth. The Elemental Trumps are associated with the three Mother Letters, Aleph, Mem and Shin. The seven Planetary Trumps are associated with the seven Double Letters, Tau, Kaph, Peh, Resh, Daleth, Beth and Gimel. The twelve Zodiacal Trumps are associated with the twelve Single Letters, Tzaddi, Vav, Zain, Cheth, Teth, Yod, Lamed, Nun, Samekh, Ayin, Heh and Qoph. All three of these lists follow the order of the cards listed under the three headings above.
At this point, it is late: I'm getting a bit tired and I have an errand or two to run, so I'll pause here and take up the suit cards later.
Thank you,

The Deck: Suit Cards
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 7:56 PMIt's a bit more complicated with the suit cards. The four suits refer to four different types of energy or of kinds of issues.
Wands = Fire. Spiritual issues dealing with decisions to be made or with investigation of the spiritual processes.
Cups = Water. Love or emotional issues in general. Family and romantic relationships.
Swords = Air. Mental issues. Thought, communication, communications media (books, TV, movies, video games, newspapers, magazines, etc.) Words, speech.
Disks (Coins) = Material issues. Money, work, finances, investments, material property, real estate, savings, etc.
The numbered suit cards follow the signs of the zodiac, with the exception of the Aces. The 2,3, 4 of each suit correspond to the Cardinal Sign of each element. The 5,6,7 correspond to the Fixed or Kerubic sign of the element. The 8,9 10 are assigned to the Mutable sign of each element. Thus the number and the element tell you which zodiac sign the card corresponds to and the sequence of numbers tells us which decan of the sign the particular card indicates. Here's a list:
1. Wands, Element of Fire
Aries, Cardinal Fire
2 of Wands: 1st decan of Aries (0-10 degrees) Mars in Aries. The Lord of Dominion.
3 of Wands: 2nd decan of Aries (11-20 degrees) Sol in Aries. The Lord of Virtue.
4 of Wands: 3rd decan of Aries (21-30 degrees) Venus in Aries. The Lord of Completion.
Leo, Fixed Fire
5 of Wands: 1st decan of Leo (0-10 degrees) Saturn in Leo. The Lord of Strife.
6 of Wands: 2nd decan of Leo (11-20). Jupiter in Leo. The Lord of Victory.
7 of Wands 3rd decan of Leo (21-30) Mars in Leo. The Lord of Valor.
Sagittarius, Mutable Fire
8 of Wands: 1st decan of Sagittarius (0-10) Mercury in Sagittarius. The Lord of Swiftness.
9 of Wands: 2nd decan of Sagittarius (11-20) Moon in Sagittarius. The Lord of Strength.
10 of Wands: 3rd decan of Sagittarius (21-30) Saturn in Sagittarius. The Lord of Oppression.
2.Cups, Element of Water.
Cancer, Cardinal Water
2 of Cups: 1st decan of Cancer. Venus in Cancer. The Lord of Love.
3 of Cups: 2nd decan of Cancer. Mercury in Cancer. The Lord of Abundance.
4 of Cups: 3rd decan of Cancer. Moon in Cancer. The Lord of Luxury.
Scorpio, Fixed Water
5 of Cups: 1st decan of Scorpio. Mars in Scorpio. The Lord of Disappointment.
6 of Cups: 2nd decan of Scorpio. Sol in Scorpio. The Lord of Pleasure.
7 of Cups: 3rd decan of Scorpio. Venus in Scorpio. The Lord of Debauch.
Pisces, Mutable Water.
8 of Cups: 1st decan of Pisces. Saturn in Pisces. The Lord of Indolence.
9 of Cups: 2nd decan of Pisces. Jupiter in Pisces. The Lord of Happiness.
10 of Cups: 3rd decan of Pisces. Mars in Pisces. The Lord of Satiety.
Swords, Element of Air.
Libra, Cardinal Air.
2 of Swords: 1st decan of Libra. Moon in Libra. The Lord of Peace.
3 of Swords: 2nd decan of Libra. Saturn in Libra. The Lord of Sorrow.
4 of Swords: 3rd decan of Libra. Jupiter in Libra. The Lord of Truce.
Aquarius, Fixed Air
5 of Swords: 1st decan of Libra. Venus in Aquarius. The Lord of Defeat.
6 of Swords: 2nd decan of Libra. Mercury in Aquarius. The Lord of Science.
7 of Swords: 3rd decan of Libra. Moon in Aquarius. The Lord of Futility.
Gemini, Mutable Air
8 of Swords: 1st decan of Gemini. Jupiter in Gemini. The Lord of Interference.
9 of Swords: 2nd decan of Gemini. Mars in Gemini. The Lord of Cruelty.
10 of Swords: 3rd decan of Gemini. Sol in Gemini. The Lord of Ruin.
Disks, Element of Earth.
Capricorn, Fixed Earth.
2 of Disks: 1st decan of Capricorn. Jupiter in Capricorn. The Lord of Change.
3 of Disks: 2nd decan of Capricorn. Mars in Capricorn. The Lord of Work.
4 of Disks: 3rd decan of Capricorn. Sol in Capricorn. The Lord of Power.
Taurus, Fixed Earth.
5 of Disks: 1st decan of Taurus. Mercury in Taurus. The Lord of Worry.
6 of Disks: 2nd decan of Taurus. Moon in Taurus. The Lord of Success.
7 of Disks: 3rd decan of Taurus. Saturn in Taurus. The Lord of Failure.
Virgo, Mutable Earth.
8 of Disks: 1st decan of Virgo. Sun in Virgo. The Lord of Prudence.
9 of Disks: 2nd decan of Virgo. Venus in Virgo. The Lord of Gain.
10 of Disks: 3rd decan of Virgo. Mercury in Virgo. The Lord of Wealth.
In these the associated planets follow the order of the planetary hours, beginning and ending with Mars in the first decan of Aries and the last decan of Pisces. They run in order through the decans which is why they do not run in order through the signs. The order is from slowest to swiftest: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sol, Venus, Mercury and Luna. If we look at the start of the zodiac, we see that the order is Mars, Sol, Venus in Aries, followed by Mercury, Luna, Saturn in Taurus and continuing with Jupiter, Mars, Sol in Gemini. The planets are repeated a total of 5 times in the zodiac since there are 36 decans and 36/7 = 5 with a remainder of 1, which explains why Mars repeats 6 times in the zodiacal sequence.
The Aces correspond to a span of the sky stretching from the zodiacal belt up to the Pole Star, centered on the Fixed Sign of their element. Thus, the Ace of Wands, called "The Root of the Powers of Fire is centered on the sign of Leo, Fixed Fire. The Ace of Wands, "The Root of the Powers of Water, is centered on Scorpio. The Ace of Swords is called "The Root of the Powers of Air", centered on Aquarius. The Ace of Sword, "The Root of the Powers of Earth" is centered on Taurus. Each covers an angle of 45 degrees, centered above the middle of the Fixed Sign, thus the Ace of Wands covers 22, and a half degrees on either side of 15 degrees Leo, and the other Aces positions can be calculated from this example.
The sixteen Court Cards are also somewhat complicated. They correspond to the sixteen tattwas of the Hindu tradition. These are the combinations of any two of the four elements. For example Fire of Fire, Water of Fire, Air of Fire and Earth of Fire. In these combos the first element is the element corresponding to the element of the card's rank and the second refers to the card's suit. Fire of Fire would be the King of Wands, Water of Fire is the Queen of Wands, Air of Fire is the Knight of Wands and Earth of Fire is the Page of Wands.
Here it is a bit more easy to visualize:
King = Fire, Queen = Water, Knight = Air, Page = Earth.
Of the four ranks, the Queens are associated to the Cardinal Signs, the Knights to the Fixed Signs and the Kings to the Mutable Signs. The Pages are not associated to the signs of the zodiac but rule the sky between the Fixed Signs and the Pole Star, somewhat like the Aces but with a span of 90 degrees, twice the width of the Aces' coverage.
Just to confuse everyone further, the names of the court cards differ in some decks. If we are looking at the Thoth Deck (the one I use) then the ranks highest to lowest are:
Knights
Queens
Princes
Princesses.
So if I forget and use these names instead I hope this will make it clearer.
The three court cards associated with the zodiac are associated with the signs corresponding to their suit and rank, but with a slight difference from the way the zodiacal Trumps are assigned. Each of these court cards cover the first two decans of their affilitate sign and the last decan of the sign before that one. In other words, the associations of the court cards to the signs are slipped backward on decan in the sequence.
Here are the signs and the corresponding court cards:
Aries, Cardinal Fire: Queen of Wands, 3rd decan of Pisces, 1st and 2nd decan of Aries.
Taurus, Fixed Earth: Knight (or Prince in Thoth deck) of Disks.
Gemini, Mutable Air: King (Thoth Knight) of Swords.
Cancer, Cardinal Water: Queen of Cups.
Leo, Fixed Fire: Knight (Page) of Wands.
Virgo, Mutable Earth: King (Knight) of Disks.
Libra, Cardinal Air: Queen of Swords..
Scorpio, Fixed Water: Knight (Page) of Cups
Sagittarius, Mutable Fire: King (Knight) of Fire.
Capricorn, Cardinal Earth: Queen of Disks.
Aquarius, Fixed Air: Knight (Page) of Swords.
Pisces, Mutable Water: King (Knight) of Cups.
And the Pages, (or Princesses) are placed above the Fixed Sign of their element and include the signs preceding and following that sign.
Page of Wands: Cancer, Leo, Virgo.
Page of Cups: Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius.
Page of Swords: Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces.
Page of Disks: Aries, Taurus, Gemini.
And finally, here are the occult titles of the court cards
King of Wands: Lord of the Flame and the Lightning; King of the Spirits of Fire.
Queen of Wands: Queen of the Throne of Flame.
Knight of Wands: Prince of the Chariot of Fire.
Page of Wands: Princess of the Shining Flame; Rose of the Palace of Fire.
King of Cups: Lord of the Waves and the Waters; King of the Hosts of the Sea.
Queen of Cups: Queen of the Thrones of Water.
Knight of Cups: Prince of the Chariot of the Waters.
Page of Cups: Princess of the Waters; Lotus of the Palace of the Floods.
King of Swords: Lord of the Winds and Breezes; King of the Spirits of Air.
Queen of Swords: Queen of the Thrones of Air.
Knight of Swords: Prince of the Chariot of the Winds.
Page of Swords: Princess of the Rushing Winds; Lotus of the Palace of Air.
King of Disks: Lord of the Wide and Fertile Land; King of the Spirits of Earth.
Queen of Disks: Queen of the Thrones of Earth.
Knight of Disks: Prince of Earth
Page of Disks: Princess of the Echoing Hills; Rose of the Palace of Earth.
I hope this is helpful rather than confusing.

Correction
Tue, September 18, 2007 - 6:14 AM<Aries, Cardinal Fire: Queen of Wands, 3rd decan of Pisces, 1st and 2nd decan of Aries.
Taurus, Fixed Earth: Knight (or Prince in Thoth deck) of Disks.
Gemini, Mutable Air: King (Thoth Knight) of Swords.
Cancer, Cardinal Water: Queen of Cups.
Leo, Fixed Fire: Knight (Page) of Wands.
Virgo, Mutable Earth: King (Knight) of Disks.
Libra, Cardinal Air: Queen of Swords..
Scorpio, Fixed Water: Knight (Page) of Cups
Sagittarius, Mutable Fire: King (Knight) of Fire.
Capricorn, Cardinal Earth: Queen of Disks.
Aquarius, Fixed Air: Knight (Page) of Swords.
Pisces, Mutable Water: King (Knight) of Cups.>
I see that I have inadvertently listed the Knight of Wands as the Page in the Thoth deck. This should, of course, have been Prince of Wands, not Page. The same is true for the Knights of Cups and of Swords. And Sagittarius should be the King (or Thoth Knight of Wands). I apologize for any confusion that may have ensued.

Re: Should we learn or unlearn tarot?
Thu, September 13, 2007 - 9:39 PMThat's a good question. Here's my take on it, for what it's worth.
Tarot is visual in nature. Images are meant to stimulate the unconscious, the imagination, intuition, the creative brain, the emotions.
Words and definitions, on the other hand, are the concern of rational brain, which tries to make 'sense', put everything into logical order, and generally solve things. We need both, but there is a place for each.
A picture is worth a thousand words.
Tarot never came with an instruction manual. It's mystery has been preserved, not institutionalized like religion. The images are universal, symbolic archetypes, which act as keys to the unconscious. There is no 'this card = this meaning', carved in stone. Yes, The Priestess is like the Moon, or Temperance is like Sagitarrius, or Tarot is like Qabbala, or the Ace of Cups is like the Holy Grail... because they are all just different expressions of the same vibration. Do you get the picture ? The numbers are important, however, because they tell you the harmonic vibration. (Note that there are majors and minors in music, also).
It is always good to read up on symbolism, numerology, mythology, etc. while studying Tarot. But the best way to really comprehend it from the inside out is to create your own deck, how it feels to you (keeping the same archetypes, but as you see them). Then you will relate to the universal archetypes in a personal way, rather than just taking someone else's opinion, which may not feel natural to you.
The process can be risky, though, so please make sure that if you take this journey into your soul, that you are living 'clean' and that you are in a balanced place, both mentally and spiritually. I cannot stress this enough. Some people don't have deep experiences, but others have been known to have psychotic break downs, just like the composer who finds the 'lost chord', or something !
So, yes, dear musketeer, INTUITION and IMAGINATION, flavored with fine saffrons of knowledge and of course, a sense of humor !!
Hope that helps.
