What's your favorite deck? Post links, please, so we can all share in the wonderment :)

Mine would be Golden Tarot by Australian artist Kat Black, I just love her work:

At the moment she's working on a new deck, Tarot Cielo, which is meant especially for digital purposes (cell phone, online readings). There also will be a limited edition in print. Am really looking forward to this one (to the printed version, that is):

I also adore the Dragon Tarot. It was my first deck, the one I learned on; a friend gave it to me several years ago.

I have bought a few other decks, and tried getting used to them, but I ended up gifting them all because I just didn't feel in tune with them. Fortunately, they all seem to have found good homes. I'm happy with my Dragon Tarot 'til someone else who knows me well decides I need a new deck.

    I have several favourites.
My current favourite deck is the Ancient Egyptian Tarot www.aeclectic.net/tarot/car...-egyptian/
The images really speak to me and I use this deck mainly for meditation and personal development.
When doing readings for someone else I either use the Rider Waite deck or the Hanson-Roberts deck www.aeclectic.net/tarot/car...n-roberts/
The first deck I ever owned was the Enchanted Tarot www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/enchanted/
The images of this deck are amazingly beautiful and very easy to read, especially for beginners.

I learnt on the Motherpeace deck, started reading for others on the Mythic Deck and have now been using the Worldspirit deck for the past couple years. I love the woodcut designs and multi-cultural take of the Worldspirit deck.

Personally I favour the Hadar version of the Marseille, a no nonsense, traditional Tarot.

I like pip cards featuring simply the number of objects of that suit arranged in a pattern for the Minor Arcana.

I find that modern decks which use scenic imagery to try and express the meaning of the Minor Arcana, while designed to help the beginner to find interpretation, can in fact help stifle the richness of interpretation possible with each card, taking ones attention away from the simple but terribly rich abstract symbolism of a number within the context of the symbolism of the suit.

The Two of Cups, for example, has some association with love relationships, but yet it can represent breasts, a mirror, or a river, for example, and we wouldn't be able to completely exhaust all of the symbolism in imagery associated with any one particular card, and yet to narrow the symbolism to one or two areas of meaning via allegorical illustration, reduces our scope, so ultimately, the simple qualities of the number two and the drinking vessel in collusion, lead us to wherever we need to go in the context of that particular reading at that particular time, without interference from artistic interpretation of that card leading our minds into a cubby-holes and blind-alleys, or into 'stereotyping' what a card might mean, which can be as great a hindrance to those on an intermediate path, as it may be a help to those just beginning.

If I was to begin teaching the Tarot tomorrow, the student would be banned from using decks with scenic Minors, until they have got to grips with working with the breadth and depth of the abstract symbolism of number and how they combine with the symbolism of suits, so as to gain a more thorough understanding of the potential that each cartoglyph holds, before getting into the habit of, '..this one means love and relationships...'. I also find that the less elaborate the Minor Arcana is in a Tarot, the Majors will always appear more pronounced and shout out for attention in a reading, which is of course what the Major cards are required to do, so a differentiation seems appropriate.

              www.aeclectic.net/tarot/car...ndex.shtml

Having said this, I think my favourite Tarot is yet to exist, until I create it myself.

Everyone's different, personally I love my pips :), but I can see what you mean.
For me, the whole fun of tarot decks is the images.
I've tried reading with a normal pack of playcards for a while (my cousin can do that very well), but found no joy in that at all (and actually found it very limiting).
Actually I believe you don't need a deck at all to 'read', all you need is to learn to listen to your intuition better and then you'll be able to read everything, people, trees, animals, the heavens... You don't need a 'toy' for that.
But I like to play :D

True yes, the images are fun. I have far too many decks of all different kinds. I do find that many are little too whimsical, and dare I say, 'gay' for me really. So I tend to just like the really old school traditional ones which have a sort of gothic, even menacing and truly occult quality, without even having to try and come across like than. I also find that reading with cards like this leaves the sitter more mystified as to where you're getting your answers from. : P

True, true. Playing cards bore the arse of me, no Majors and a court card short per suit. Cartomancy is an art on it's own really, and especially in France.

You are so right about being able to 'read' anything. That's a refreshing point of view to hear. I do it too. You know, I have even given a Tarot reading when I haven't had a deck of cards on me, I have just shuffled the deck and turned the cards over in my mind's eye, and just see what comes. ; )

Thoth, though I use the spread from Gypsy Tarot which seems to be out of print. That painter was a master of futurism!!!! I don't like the cards, but I love to cross reference with the Motherpeace interpretations. Feminist realism meets patriarchal traditionalism???? Anyway, it works for me.

                      any Rider-Watie-based deck is good.

I tried the Thoth deck and whilst it yielded good results I found it adversely affected my general mood. Anyone else find this? After a while I'd feel a bit nauseous.

i've never read with the Thoth deck, but i have had other decks that made me feel like that.

<I tried the Thoth deck and whilst it yielded good results I found it adversely affected my general mood. Anyone else find this?>

Actually, I find the Thoth talks to me more clearly than any other deck I've ever tried. The information just emerges as if out of nowhere. I've had people ask which card I've gotten a particular piece of information from and found I just can't telll most of the time. So I just tell them it's in the relationships among the cards rather than from any single card in the spread.

At times, I've been asked for a reading from a friend at a gathering where I don't have my cards with me, but someone has a deck I can borrow. No problem; I just lay out a spread and imagine the Thoth cards in place of the ones that are there and read the Thoth deck with the other deck just acting as a stand-in.

It has been said that the best Tarot decks are the ones designed by a great occultist who puts everything he knows into the symbolism. Whatever anyone thinks of Crowley personally (and there has been a great deal of utterly ridiculous scandal bandied about on him from the sensationalist press), he was one of the greatest of all time and he put more into his deck than any other, before or since. The only deck I have seen that really added something to what Crowley accomplished was the New Orleans Voodoo Tarot by my old friend Sally Ann Glassman; her interpretations of the cards in terms of themes from Voodoo was the first real advance in Tarot studies since Crowley.

But this is all just my experience and my opinion, of course; each must decide for him/herself in matters of intuition and what works for each of us.

                        With love,

I am a Tarot Card Reader/Astrologer professionally and I have gone through 3 decks of the Mythic Tarot....my favorite hands down :) However, my fiancé has recently really gotten into an old deck of Thoth cards that I gave him (I never did jive with them very well) and as he has been studying the Kabballah and several other books that tie into the Thoth deck - he's a Virgo so of course he's going to study every nook and cranny of it! (grin) - I have been gaining a whole new understanding and insights and appreciation of the Thoth deck...which is truly surprising for me. :)

There are SO many decks I adore - for their beauty, for their wisdom, for their uncanny ability to work like a charm... for lots of reasons. I'm now getting the urge to start working with tarot again after a very long pause (I did readings professionally for a couple of years, but stopped that too for awhile, passing on a huge collection of decks). Anyway, I'm getting the urge to jump back in. There are a couple of decks in the mail on the way. and I've been thinking about this very question. What were (and are) my favorites? The number and variety of decks is so completely vast! Now that I'm a literal blank slate of decks, I'm thinking about what makes a tarot a "favorite"? Which do I choose getting back into this once passion of mine? I can't believe I'm most excited about The Goddess Tarot (Kris Waldherr). Briefly, back when, the deck seemed so generally vague, even wishy washy...some of the paintings are glorious, but I remember thinking how unoriginal and boring some of the deck was, etc... BUT, it's a favorite because every single time I pick it up, I feel incredibly PEACEFUL. It's got (for me) the most serene spirit about it. It's palpable, literally. I realized that in a way it's almost irrelevant what's on the cards. Surely speaks to how powerful decks can be, how vital the deck creator's intent is, and how a deck can take on a life of its very own.

So, for now, it's my favorite. (www.artandwords.com)

Sorry for such a long story. I'm also new to this tribe - I'm glad I found it! - and I'm looking forward to this journey back into tarot.

    Bless.

For beauty, the Japanese deck and the Voodoo Tarot. And they are good decks. However...
for the 1st 10 years I automatically picked up Waite; for the next 7 years, Thoth; the next huge bunch of years, the Japanese deck; and the last 5 years or so, the Goddess deck. I guess these would be favorites, really.

My favorite is the New Orleans Voodoo deck, also. My husband & I spent about 6 months in Metairie, LA (back in 2000) & we were able to go to the New Orleans Voodoo museum - they've got quite a few paintings by Glassman (or, they HAD, I think the museum closed after Hurricane Katrina). It was nice to see her work up close & personal. The colors she uses are amazing & I love the simplistic style of the human figures - they flow and move so well.

well obviously i like the ryder white deck for beginners..and the book that comes with the cards it really explains each spread in plain written english.. but theres many tarot decks that i like..and they all appeal to me in more ways then one.. but if i had to choose a tarot deck it would have to be the ryder waite deck..

but heres a link so that everyone can check the various tarot decks that are out there: www.tarot.com/tarot/decks/index.php check this site out the art work on the cards is outstanding and very intricate.

I recently got the Universal Fantasy Tarot. What a brilliantly BEAUTIFUL deck! The only card that really doesn't do much for me is the chariot. It looks like a big edifice with anthropomorphic features with three panicking horses in front of it. I just don't get it. But the REST of the deck totally knocks my socks right directly off.

It's hard to pick a one. Some decks seem to flow at some times more than others. The Rider Waite, has been one I've been favoring lately.I have an Unicorn deck that I use from time to time, but my absolute favorite has to be the Russian Tarot of St.Petersburg.The images are breathtaking.Out of all the cards,I think the World/Universe in that deck is most intriquing.Amazing detail. Most moving for me out of all 3 decks.
