Remember! In order for the game to keep going, you not only have to
answer someone's question, but then ask a new one yourself.

One person asks a question, the next person will draw a card and answer it, then ask a question him/herself, and so on...
You can even participate more than once if you like.
There may be an obvious answer to my question but wanted to get some feedback.

When doing a reading for someone, which direction should the 'reader' place the cards?
facing towards the reader or towards the inquirer?

I ask this because the last time I read for someone (celtic cross layout) I had the cards facing me,
while the inquirer was across from me.
When I caught this.. I later flipped the cards to read as they were facing her and of course it shifted the
interpretation a bit?

Any suggested thoughts on which direction to face the cards when doing a reading?

Okay…. I don’t want to burst any one’s bubbles here…but the rich symbolism of the tarot we know today is built up from years of assumptions, flat out contrived information and so fourth.

There’s about 3 remaining of the oldest decks we have, and there’s absolutely no information on what they were used for. There’s no proof they were used for divination, there’s plenty of indication they were used for simple gambling…they may have even been a teaching tool.

Before I go any further, I’m a tarot reader…as in, I’ve actually financially relied on what I’ve gotten from donations. (You have to be pretty good if you tell people off the bat that if they don’t like the reading they don’t have to pay). I do believe in cartomancy as a relevant means of divination. However… I’m increasingly annoyed at what occultists have done to the tarot, which has otherwise been fairly neutral.

Here’s my complaints:

1.	Stripping Christian influences out entirely changes the meaning of the cards, the stereotypes, the philosophy they convey. The female pope was a shocking card for an example. Such an impact is totally lost when converted to the benign “High Priestess”. Adding neo pagan influences like changing what were obviously coins into pentacles seems downright pretentious. It’s not necessary and they change what our minds conjure up.

2.	Adding blatantly made up concepts like reversals? How is this relevant? WHERE did this idea come from? The fact of the matter is it was pulled out of someone’s ass.

3.	Coming up with collective unconscious symbolism off of faulty information… for an example, the “Hermit” was originally an old man holding an hour glass. It was visually corrupted when the deck was mass printed as a game years later as being a lantern. Father time has substantially different meanings than a hermit, wouldn’t you say? And how would the death card mean symbolic transformation if the card was made when the horrors of the black plague were an everyday part of life?

4.	It was concluded, hundreds of years later that the deck was originally a means of divination, despite no historical documentation. That’s quite the assessment, wouldn’t you agree?

Any way, despite all of that, I think any thing can be used to tell the future. I say lawn mower clippings could be used for divination. It doesn’t matter, as long as there’s logic applies, many possible outcomes that reflect situations people really encounter…and if the questioner puts themselves into what they’re doing, statistics will shift to reflect what needs to be known.

Who knows, maybe the original deck was actually using its game aspect as a ruse. The major arcana appeared to have been added to what otherwise was a simple Arabic deck not that different than modern playing cards. Perhaps, during a time when telling the future seemed evil, they snuck in special divination cards into a deck of playing cards when under scrutiny. Maybe the religious symbols were thrown in to make it appear more Christian than it was. It’s all speculation at this point, and it frustrates me how many people have come up with such drastic conclusions.

Any way…the point is, we’re completely liberated of any thing Rider Weight, the Golden Dawn or any one and what they had to say of the tarot. I think if we’re to really pursue this, we should come up with our own meanings to the original cards, our own system of reading… whatever.

If you’d like more information on all of this, check out this website: http://it.geocities.com/a_pollett/cards34.htm

Any way, as I said, I felt like giving a few mini reviews of my favorite decks and why I use them…here’s my top three:

Thoth Crowely Deck: You might be wondering why, if I have such a beef with occultists making shit up, that this would be the deck I use the most. My attitude is, I think Crowely understood how little we know about the tarot, and so he packed the cards with so much symbolism, so much meaning that they become something entirely new. He enriched the characters, the numbers, the allegories with so much culture, philosophy… that well, it’s almost impossible not to speak to you. And isn’t that the point of cartomancy? I don’t even view it as a tarot deck, so much as a cartomancy deck simply because it is VERY far removed from the original decks, but it’s equally meaningful and effective.

I also am thankful it’s designed with reversals out of the question. The art work is beautiful, and when I’m doing readings for the masses, I want something expressive enough where the people getting a reading can kind of get an idea of where I’m coming up with some of the information I’m saying. Likewise, the astrological, alchemical, elemental connotations once learned allow a lot of abstract thought and intuition from the reader. It may seem mechanical and overly scientific to many, but once you get past that barrier and wield it with confidence, it’s really open for a lot of interpretations.

The Visconti Tarot: Sorry to be vague… there’s umpteen remakes of these old decks all by the same title. I believe that every single tarot reader/enthusiast or historical art/culture student pick up one of these reproductions. There’s many many options… mini ones, ones that are photographs of the original art to show how they antiquidated… and one that I absolutely love and own that has gold foil and recoloring to make them feel like a somewhat gaudy symbol of wealth they were at the time (only the wealthy could afford these decks, and were commissioned for the Visconti Family) I don’t like the modern art work they did for two cards that were lost for time, however…And I was a bit pissed off that the promised book of instructions and historical information wasn’t included (I contacted the publisher, and they were only helpful to a point). Otherwise, it’s stunning…and despite the gold foil, these cards are pretty durable. (To test it, I took the sample card and drug it around in my pocket for a week or so. The only scratches in the gold were ones I deliberately made).

The trouble you might run into are there are two things on the market that are both called the Visconti tarot…one, which I have, is missing only 4 cards and is more standard. Another, the Cary Yale remakes are entirely different, and had half of it not be lost to time, decks as we know it may be different as it features 4 male knights, 4 female knights, 4 male gnaves and 4 female ones, thus DRASTICALLY altering the numbering.

Likewise some major arcane deals with the Christian virtues… and batons are arrows (Which I’m guessing is because the aforementioned Visconti Deck’s swords and Batons are similar and hard to tell apart at times). I’ve yet to find a remake of this particular ancient deck in stores…I don’t trust Amazon, a lot of tarot deck purchasers wound up with something unexpected. They are out there though. None in gold foil unfortunately

I’d recommend the gold one mainly. The Cary Yale…well, it’s just too obscure, too much is missing…though I do like the arrows a lot. (Maybe its cause I’m a Sagittarius?)

Like I said, these are the OLDEST remaining tarot decks. Meaning we have nothing to work with before them. These are the roots, and you owe it to yourself to at least be aquainted with them.

The Fantod Pak: There’s not a lot of novelty tarot I appreciate… a lot of em just seem really kind of stupid. Edward Gorey solved that problem by making a deck that’s not even attempting to mimic the tarot. With bleak imagery like “The burning head” or “the bundle” these cards are really funny in a cryptic, Gorey sort of way. The suggested interpretations are hysterical, all about impending doom, and poke fun at the sometimes non-sensical meanings the Rider Waite deck offered. The way it’s supposed to be read…it’s awesome, and bound to be a smashing hit at a party to say the least (it involves spinning around and throwing the cards up in the air and picking them up blindfolded). I suggest this deck for any one that’s trying to ham up the creepy tarot ready stereotypes.

And that’s it for now. Any thoughts? I may write more later.

I would like to mail out ten FREE copies to those of you willing to give it a read and let us know what you think.

Its made primarily by using my matte paintings from my new tarot project, blended with some 3D computer graphics and video. Its primarily just for fun but also as a PR exercise to promote interest in the new deck, and to give a hint of the story line that will accompany it. Its still a work in progress, some scenes are still only in grey and still need to be rendered in full color, so it won't be finished for another month or so, but I hope you'll find it interesting nevertheless.
PLEASE REPOST!

> Dear friends,
>
> After decades of repression under Chinese rule,
> the Tibetan people’s frustrations have burst
> onto the streets in protests and riots. With the
> spotlight of the upcoming Olympic Games now on
> China, Tibetans are crying out to the world for
> change.
>
> The Chinese government has said that the
> protesters who have not yet surrendered "
> will be punished". Its leaders are right
> now considering a crucial choice between
> escalating brutality or dialogue that could
> determine the future of Tibet, and China.
>
> We can affect this historic choice--China does
> care about its international reputation. China’s
> President Hu Jintao needs to hear that the ’Made
> in China’ brand and the upcoming Olympics in
> Beijing can succeed only if he makes the right
> choice. But it will take an avalanche of global
> people power to get his attention--and we need
> it in the next 48 hours.
>
> The Tibetan Nobel peace prize winner and
> spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama has called for
> restraint and dialogue: he needs the world’s
> people to support him. Click below now to sign
> the petition--and tell absolutely everyone you
> can right away--our goal is 1 million voices
> united for Tibet:
>
::: SIGN THE PETITION! :::
http://www.avaaz.org/en/tibet_end_the_violence/6.php
>
> China’s economy is totally dependent on "
> Made in China" exports that we all buy, and
> the government is keen to make the Olympics in
> Beijing this summer a celebration of a new
> China, respected as a leading world power. China
> is also a very diverse country with a brutal
> past and has reason to be concerned about its
> stability -- some of Tibet’s rioters killed
> innocent people. But President Hu must recognize
> that the greatest danger to Chinese stability
> and development comes from hardliners who
> advocate escalating repression, not from
> Tibetans who seek dialogue and reform.
>
> We will deliver our petition directly to Chinese
> officials in London, New York, and Beijing, but
> it must be a massive number before we deliver
> the petition. Please forward this email to your
> address book with a note explaining to your
> friends why this is important, or use our tell-a-
> friend tool to email your address book--it will
> come up after you sign the petition.
>
> The Tibetan people have suffered quietly for
> decades. It is finally their moment to speak--we
> must help them be heard.
>
> With hope and respect,
>
> Ricken, Iain, Graziela, Paul, Galit, Pascal,
> Milena, Ben and the whole Avaaz team
>
> PS - It has been suggested that the Chinese
> government may block the Avaaz website as a
> result of this email, and thousands of Avaaz
> members in China will no longer be able to
> participate in our community. A poll of Avaaz
> members over the weekend showed that over 80% of
> us believed it was still important to act on
> Tibet despite this terrible potential loss to
> our community, if we thought we could make a
> difference. If we are blocked, Avaaz will help
> maintain the campaign for internet freedom for
> all Chinese people, so that our members in China
> can one day rejoin our community.

BIRTH CHART TAROT:

A Look At Tarot By Way Of The Zodiac

The cosmic dance of planets will help to unfold ideas for every sign of the Zodiac, and bring to each of us something special." Andrea Valeria

You can make a chart on www.astro.com.... It is free to make your own account, and to find your Sun, Ascendant, and Moon Signs!

A Few Terms To Get You Started...

SUN SIGN: The Essence of You

The sign that the Sun was transiting at the time of your birth. What you were put here to learn, your conscious purpose, and drive to fulfill your goals.

RISING SIGN (Ascendant): Your Outward Expression

The sign of the zodiac that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. The face you show the world, your outward expression.

MOON SIGN: Your Inner Life

The sign that the Moon was transiting at the time of your birth. Your emotional nature, your unconscious, the hidden parts of you, the inner self, Karma, and your past life.

RULING PLANET (Ruler): The Driving Energy

The planet that has dominion over a specific astrological sign. For example, Mars is the planetary ruler of Aries. In a birth chart (natal chart), the planet that rules the Rising Sign (Ascendant) is said to be the ruling planet of the chart.

Overall, the planets are the driving energy of your birth chart and it is the placement of these planets in the various zodiac signs that determines how you express the different facets of your personality.

HOUSES: The "Where" of your life

The twelve divisions of a horoscope that represent different areas, or circumstances, of life are called houses.

Planets are the driving energies of a birth chart: the "what" of your life. Signs are "how" the energies operate. But, all this takes place in the houses, the "where" of your daily life, and the place where you work out your destiny.

Each house has a natural ruler, a sign that shares a relationship, or resemblance, to the house itself. The 12 Houses and their natural rulers are:

First House of Self: Aries
Second House of Money and Possessions: Taurus
Third House of Communication: Gemini
Fourth House of Home: Cancer
Fifth House of Creativity and Self-Expression: Leo
Sixth House of Service and Health: Virgo
Seventh House of Partnerships and Marriage: Libra
Eighth House of Death and Regeneration: Scorpio
Ninth House of Philosophy and Long-Distance Travel: Sagittarius
Tenth House of Career and Public Standing: Capricorn
Eleventh House of Friends, Hopes and Wishes: Aquarius
Twelfth House of Secrets, Sorrows, Karma and Self-Undoing: Pisces
(I prefer to call this the House of Unfininshed Business)

Much controversy surrounds how houses should be divided. The most common method is the Equal House System, that is, the houses are divided into 12 equal arcs of 30 degrees each, making a perfect 360 degree circle. This system is easy to understand and is the oldest method used in astrology.

Of course, nothing in a birth chart is in perfect order and the fascination comes with determining how the planets, signs and houses interact with each other: Are your planets in harmony with the signs and houses they are in, or do they conflict and present challenges?

For example, Capricorn might be "at home" in the tenth house of career and public standing and get along nicely with its natural ruling planet Saturn, but what if your Capricorn is in the 12th House of Self-Undoing and so is Neptune? How will Capricorn express itself then? It gets very interesting and brings us to the next definition.

ASPECTS:

The geometrical relationships between planets in a birth chart, or the flow of force (energy) between the planets. Indicates areas of harmony, challenge, strain, ease and/or power. They are classified as major and minor, hard or soft, but the study of aspects is an important part of horoscope interpretation.

POLARITY (Duality) Your Sister Sign:

All of life is made up of opposites: light and dark, positive and negative, male and female, life and death, yin and yang, thinking and feeling, conscious and unconscious.

In astrology, this opposition is a grouping of two astrological signs, each sign opposite in the zodiac to the other. For example, Aries is the opposite sign of Libra, and vice versa.

The Polarities (Sister Signs) are:

Aries--Libra
Taurus--Scorpio
Gemini--Sagittarius
Cancer--Capricorn
Leo--Aquarius
Virgo--Pisces

The entire birth chart represents the whole of your individual personality. It is composed of two halves: one that represents the conscious, solar, active, masculine, day side of consciousness; and the other half, which represents the unconscious, lunar, passive, feminine, night side. The birth chart centers itself upon this interaction of paired opposites, and consists of polarities, that is, "power pairs" of opposite signs.

The signs that oppose each other have much in common because they function on the same wave length but on opposite poles. It is important to look for similarities and differences in the signs that oppose one another in your birth chart because you will learn much about yourself.

Polarity, your opposite sign, is your "sister sign" because the energy is alike in a complementary way. This is the duality, or balance, of you. If, for example, you are a Leo, you need to be open to the energy of your opposite sign Aquarius, to complete your personality and development.

******************************

THE STARS IN TAROT:
Blending Tarot and Astrology for Insight

Aristotle once wrote that the soul thinks in images. Both the tarot and astrology are laden with symbolism, the language of the psyche. Tarot evokes images of astrology through its energy and symbols. The meanings of the Major Arcana and Court Cards are mysteriously like the descriptions of astrology's planets and signs.

The Major Arcana cards represent both the signs and their ruling planets. The signs are the "how" of a birth chart, how the energy of a planet is conditioned and how it operates. For signs, and their corresponding tarot cards, ask yourself: How is this energy manifesting in my life?

The planets are the basic psychological functions common to all people, and they are are the driving, activating energies in a birth chart. Think of your ruling planet as the the active voice in your life, a verb. Ask youself: What is happening in my life?

The Court Cards, with their four suits, can also be compared to astrology. There are twelve signs in the zodiac, three of which are assigned to each element. Water includes Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Fires signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Air is represented by Gemini, Libra and Aquarius; and Earth rounds it out with Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.

Another important astrological classification represents three basic principles of life: Creation (Cardinal), Preservation (Fixed), and Destruction (Mutable). These three classificatins reflect the cyclical nature of life: we are born, live, die, and change to be born again. Cardinal signs are originators. Fixed signs are persistent finishers. Mutable signs are changing and adaptable.

In the Court Cards of tarot, the four kings reflect astrology's Cardinal signs of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn through their element, or suit of tarot. They are authoritative and full of energy to organize, with the strong will to accomplish goals:

King of Wands: Fire (Aries)
King of Cups: Water (Cancer)
King of Swords: Air (Libra)
King of Pentacles: Earth (Capricorn)

The four queens reflect astrology's Fixed Signs of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius through their element, or suit. They are persistent, reliable, loyal and patient, with the capacity to nurture:

Queen of Pentacles: Earth (Taurus)
Queen of Wands: Fire (Leo)
Queen of Cups: Water (Scorpio)
Queen of Swords: Air (Aquarius)

The four Knights reflect astrology's Mutable signs of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces through their element, or suit: adaptable, flexible, volatile, seeking new goals and challenges to fit the current circumstances or mood.

Knight of Swords: Air (Gemini)
Knight of Pentacles: Earth (Virgo)
Knight of Wands: Fire (Sagittarius)
Knight of Cups: Water (Pisces)

The four pages, which do not correspond to any sign, indicate the potential held in each of the four elements and introduce their suit.

Page of Pentacles (Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)
Page of Swords (Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)
Page of Wands (Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
Page of Cups (Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)

I also feel that the Pages correspond to The Fool of tarot: open and willing to take a leap into the unknown. Pages represent youthfulness with a willingness to risk, grow, learn and try something new. Reads like a description of The Fool, doesn't it? But hey, that's just me.

*****************************

WHAT'S IN YOUR HOUSE?
The Minor Arcana and the Houses of Astrology

The Houses in astrology show "where" the energies of a birth chart will work: the place where you work out your destiny and the department of life.

The energies of the planets and signs give us opportunities to learn, but we need a place to practice what we learn. That place is our day to day lives, our circumstances, and is represented by the Minor Arcana cards of the tarot.

The Minor Arcana and their corresponding suits relate to the four elements in astrology:

Earth: The suit of Pentacles and the three Earth Signs of Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn

Air: The suit of Swords and the three Air Signs of Gemini, Libra and Aquarius

Fire: The suit of Wands and the three Fire Signs of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius

Water: The suit of Cups and the three Water signs of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.

Let's look closer at the twelve astrological houses. They can be divided into four groups of three each: Angular, Succedent or Cadent Houses. These are important divisions in astrology because they indicate how you will achieve prominence (Angular Houses, 1,4,7, and 10); how you manifest stability, willpower and sense of purpose (Succedent Houses, 2,5, 8, and 11); and how you use your mind and communicate your ideas. (Cadent Houses, 3,6, 9 and 12.)

Or, the houses can be divided into four groups of three houses each: The Houses of Life, Wealth, Relationships and Endings. Each way of dividing the houses helps us see the overall picture of how the houses relate to our lives.

For the purposes of simplicity and ease of understanding, I have chosen to relate the minor arcana of the tarot to the four houses of: Life, Wealth, Relationships and Endings. Let's look closer at the four groups.

The Houses of Life, Houses 1, 5, and 9: Fire (Wands)

First House of self, energy and vitality. (Aries)
Fifth House of creativity, self-expression and offspring (Leo)
Ninth House of philosophy, learning and conviction. (Sagittarius)

The natural rulers of the Houses of Life are the Fire signs of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, so the Houses of Life correspond to the tarot minor arcana suit of WANDS. Can you see the creative connection between the traditional meanings of the suit of Wands and the Houses of Life?

The Houses of Wealth, Houses 2, 6 and 10: Earth (Pentacles)

Second House of money, possessions, personal property, and finance (Taurus)
Sixth House of service, health, employment and work (Virgo)
Tenth House of career, and public standing (Capricorn)

The natural rulers of the Houses of Wealth are Earth signs of Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, so the Houses of Wealth correspond to the minor arcana suit of PENTACLES. Can you see the earthly connection between the traditional meanings of the suit of Pentacles and the Houses of Wealth?

The Houses of Relationships, Houses 3, 7 and 11: Air (Swords)

Third House of communication, relatives and neighbors (Gemini)
Seventh House of partnerships, relationships, negotiation and marriage (Libra)
Eleventh House of friends, groups and organizations (Aquarius)

The natural rulers of the Houses of Relationships are the Air signs of Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, so the Houses of Relationships correspond to the minor arcana suit of SWORDS. Can you see the intellectual connection between the traditional meanings of the suit of Swords and the Houses of Relationships?

Note: This is not about the emotion of relationships, but rather the psychology of the way we communicate (relate) to one another, for good or ill.

The Houses of Endings (and Beginnings), Houses 4, 8 and 12: Water (Cups)

The Fourth House of home and the later years of life (Cancer)
The Eighth House of death and regeneration (Scorpio)
The Twelfth House of unfinished business, spiritual reward and karma.

The natural rulers of the Houses of Endings are the Water signs of Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces, so they correspond to the minor arcana suit of CUPS. I have included both the alpha and omega of life because every ending is but another beginning. Can you see the emotional depth and connection between the traditional meanings of the suit of Cups and the Houses of Endings?

Now let's explore numbering of the minor cards and astrology's sequence of events. The houses are where the planets express themselves. Just like numbers 1 -10 of the minor arcana (also called the pip cards), the houses are phases, or cycles, of experience that unfold in a certain order, or sequence.

For example, the First House of Self comes logically before the Seventh House of Relationships. In other words, the houses represent your life path, and the numbers symbolize your location, or progression, on the path.

Here is a brief summary of the numerical associations of the minor arcana cards as I understand them, but remember, opinions vary on this:

1: Beginnings, potential
2: Balance or the need for balance
3: Expansion, growth
4: Stability or stagnation
5: Conflict, struggle, challenge
6: Harmony, cooperation
7: Inner work, awakening
8: Regeneration, new ways forward
9: Completion or foundation
10: Starting over at a higher cycle

(*) In some books, Nine is integration of experience and Ten is completion.

Numbering is important in the tarot, and the numbers one through ten carry the same meanings throughout the deck, but are expressed differently through their suits. For instance, the Ace (or one) means new beginnings, but the Ace of Cups conveys emotional beginnings, while the Ace of Wands suggests creative or inspirational beginnings.

In a layout, look at the number of the minor arcana to determine its stage or progression, and how the card corresponds to the traditional meaning that you know. In other words, the number represents the progression (or stage) of your life journey.

To illustrate, are you just beginning with an Ace, in conflict or struggle with a five, or awakening to new possibilities with an eight? Now look at the department of life, or in what area the journey is happening according to the suit: Wands (Fire, Life, Creative Inspiration), Pentacles (Earth, Wealth), Swords (Air, Relationships), or Cups (Water, Endings and Beginnings)

To summarize the relationship of the minor arcana to the houses of astrology:

Above all, remember that the purpose of this method of reading is to expand your understanding of the cards, not restrict it! So, always first refer to the meaning of the minor arcana card as you know it. Then ask yourself: What department of life does it represent?

WANDS: Houses of Life
PENTACLES: Houses of Wealth
SWORDS: Houses of Relationships
CUPS: Houses of Endings or Beginnings

Then look at the number to determine its stage or progression, and how the card corresponds to the traditional meaning that you know. The minor suit shows where in your life the energy is operating, and the number represents the progression (or stage) of your life journey.

For example, the Four of Swords turns up. You know the traditional meaning is a time for introspection, taking the time to rest, or perhaps hiding to avoid confrontation.

Now see that it is in the House of Relationships. So where in your relationships (professional and/or personal) is there a need for introspection, rest, or where are you avoiding confrontation?

Finally, look at the number of the minor card to determine your progression in relationships: the four usually means stability or stagnation. Are your relationships stable or stagnate? Let's say you know they are boring right now. So you know that the Four of Swords means taking the time for introspection in relationships because you have stagnated.

In any tarot layout you are doing, especially if it is related to astrology, when a Minor Arcana card comes up, ask yourself: Where am I to work out my destiny surrounding this issue, in what department of life? Where is the energy of this layout being activated, where do I practice my life lessons?

I will take this one step further: When you look at a layout across or up-and-down to see the relationships and conflicts in the cards, you are actually looking at the "aspects" of the layout: the flow of force (energy) between the cards. These aspects (relationships of one card to another) can be easy or difficult, soft or hard, just as they are in astrology.

Pay attention when one of your astrological cards comes up in a reading because it has special significance for you in the layout. Not only did your unconscious mind bring the card to your reading, but the heavens are communicating with you, too.

Blending tarot with astrology yields fresh insight into the significance of each card for you. The Stars in Tarot gives a fresh perspective on your personality by way of the zodiac. Pay attention because the stars are trying to talk to you.

A gentle reminder: Tarot cards and astrological signs are forms of energy. The energy can range from its purest expression (golden light or exaltation) to its most challenging form (the shadow or affliction). We usually fall somewhere in between the spectrum of possibilities.

The energy of a tarot card, like the energy of astrology, is neutral. It is how we use that energy that matters. No tarot card is "good or bad," but a spectrum of life's experiences, with all its attending joys and sorrows.

Every card is an opportunity to learn, and whether golden light or shadow, the source of that energy is the same. The only difference is in its expression. We always have the choice to change what is no longer useful to us and express that energy differently.

Intro to the Happy Birthday layout:

Rarely does the tarot give specific instructions, such as "Move to Rhode Island and open a metaphysical shop." But the tarot does offer a sense of what we need, the right direction to go for our greatest good. The Happy Birthday layout can be used any time you want to align yourself with the stars--your unique astrological portrait.

This layout is in the shape of a birthday candle, (I'm afraid you'll have to use your imagination), and it helps illuminate your life path. Visualize card one in a horizontal position as the base of the candle, cards two through six represent the candle itself, and card seven completes the taper as the flame.

Reversed Cards:

It is not necessary to spend too much time on reversals in this layout. If a reversed card means anything, it suggests that it is different from the other cards: Hey, look at me first! Reversed cards may also be the advice cards of the layout, indicating a "need for" the energy of the card. Finally, they can suggest deeply psychological or unconscious energies that are unknown to the seeker at the time of the reading, but are about to surface.

Please don't get stuck in reversals. To me, regardless of how they fall, all cards represent a spectrum of possibilities that range from shadow to light, discomfort to comfort, life lesson to life wisdom. The challenge of interpretation is figuring out where we are in relationship to the cards at the time of the reading, reversed or not.

A word about "liking" and "disliking" a tarot card:

When you turn a card over in a layout, do you have a strong feeling about the card? I believe strong responses to a card, whether positive or negative, are clues from our unconscious that we should pay attention to that card.

Cards we "like" suggest that we are going in the right direction along our life path: yes, keep up the good work. They also point to our strengths, talents and natural abilities. And, as an interesting twist, they can mean we are getting too much of a good thing, everything in moderation the old saying goes.

Cards we "dislike" also offer messages of direction that enable us to release obstacles, or shadows, and grow--if we choose to face the challenge.

Now on to the spread...

Choose your Ruling Planet Card, Polarity Card and Sun Sign Card from the list below. Place them face up in positions one, four and seven as shown here....

7. Ruling Planet Card
6. The Next Step
5. Birthday Wish
4. Polarity Card
3. Challanges
2. Strengths
1. Ruling Planet Card

Note: Even though the ruling planet of the the Ascendant (Rising sign) is said to be the ruler of the birth chart, this layout concerns itself with your Sun Sign. Therefore, use the tarot card that corresponds to the ruling planet of your Sun Sign.

For example, you are Aries Sun and Scorpio Rising. According to the list below, you would choose The Tower, not Judgment, because Mars is the ruler of Aries, and The Tower symbolizes Mars. Judgment is the card for Pluto, ruling planet of Scorpio.

If you know your Rising Sign and want to be creative, use both tarot cards in position one: the card for your Sun Sign ruling planet, and the card of your Ascendant's ruling planet, that is, the ruling planet of your birth chart. In the example above, you would place the Tower (Mars, ruler of Aries) and Judgment (Pluto, ruler of Scorpio) in position one.

Then look for any conflicts and compatibilities of the two cards as you do the layout. For instance, how does the Tower interact with Judgment? What is the conflict or complement of energy? Don't old forms have to fall (The Tower) before the karmic slate can be cleared (Judgment)?

I am convinced that it is the relationship of one card to another in a layout that yields the most useful information. But, I'm a Libra Sun in the 12th House, Libra Rising: I view the universe through the lens of relationships.

Shuffle the remaining cards, concentrating on any concerns that you now want answered. (If it is actually your birthday, be sure to make a wish!) When you are ready, randomly select four cards face down and place them in positions two, three, five and six, as shown in the diagram above.

Turn the four cards over and read the layout as follows:

Position 1 My Ruling Planet Card:
(From List Below)

The driving energy of the layout. All other cards are read in relationship to it. How you express the different facets of your personality in the rest of the layout.

If you like the card, it means you are comfortable with its energy and know how to use it for growth. If you do not like the card, it indicates an area that needs your attention because it is the dominant energy around you. Best to make friends with it, or at least be attuned to the lessons it has to offer you.

Position 2 My Strengths:
Where you shine, your talents and abilities. Where the energy flows without resistance. What to keep and nurture because it makes you strong.

If you like the card, you are using its energy to its highest potential. If the card makes you uncomfortable, it indicates an area that is blocked and needs work. If you work with the message of this card, it will release its energy and make you strong.

How does Card 2 (Strengths) relate to your Ruling Planet card, the driving energy of the layout? Note any conflicts and complements (compatibilities).

Position 3 My Challenges:
Your life lessons or energy blocks. What you need to face in order to grow. Areas where you get stuck and may keep repeating.

If you like this card, try reading it in its reversed or shadow form. Maybe you are getting too much of a good thing? For example, the Sun comes up here. What could be wrong with that? Well, plenty, if its golden rays are giving you sunburn or burnout. Being comfortable with this card can also mean you are facing your challenges head-on and doing the work you need to do.

If you don't like the card, it indicates an area (block) where you know you need work to release its energy for growth.

How does Card 3 (Challenges) relate to your Ruling Planet card, the driving energy of the layout? Note any conflicts and complements (compatibilities).

Position 4 My Polarity Card, The Sister Sign:
(From List Below)

The opposite of you and it shows your dual nature. What you need to draw towards you and attract in order to feel complete.

Polarity, your opposite sign, is your "sister sign" because the energy is like your own Sun Sign in a complementary way. This is the duality, or balance, of you.

The card may make you uncomfortable because it feels foreign to you. It may even feel like your "evil twin," but rest assured, this card is you--the other half of you. If you like the card, you are incorporating its energy into your life.

The question to ask yourself is: What do I need to learn and incorporate into my life (for balance) from the meaning of this card?

How does Card 4 (Polarity) relate to your Ruling Planet card, the driving energy of the layout? Note any conflicts and complements (compatibilities).

Position 5 What is my birthday wish?
This card gives focus to your deepest desires and hopes, the true direction on your life path because your dreams and desires come from your Higher Self, a sacred part of you.

If you like this card it means you are on the right track for the fullest expression of your Sun Sign. If the card makes you uncomfortable, it indicates the energy that is standing in your way. You will have to deal with its energy (the block) before your sacred dreams can become reality.

How does Card 5 (Birthday Wish) relate to your Ruling Planet card, the driving energy of the layout? Note any conflicts and complements (compatibilities).

Position 6 The Next Step (The Future):
Where do you go from here? The next step on your life path for the fullest expression of your Sun Sign personality.

If you like this card, be glad and look forward to the next adventure.

If this card makes you uncomfortable, it indicates a possible upcoming life lesson. While the life lesson may be no fun, it will offer you wisdom and make you strong.

Remember, the cards, like astrology, impel, they do not compel. Nothing in tarot is preordained. The cards either describe a situation, or give advice about a situation. If you don't like this card, work with the energy of the other cards to see how you can change its direction. You always have the power of choice to change what is no longer useful and create your own future--or, at least, face the future prepared and with courage.

How does Card 6 (The Next Step/Future) relate to your Ruling Planet card, the driving energy of the layout? Note any conflicts and complements (compatibilities).

Position 7 My Sun Sign Card, The Essence of Me:
(From List Below)

What you were put here to learn, the focal point of this life time. The Sun Sign card is in the flame of the candle because it shows your true nature and represents your Spirit. It remains constant throughout the year. It illuminates your conscious purpose, your drive to achieve goals, and the "You" you know yourself to be.

Bottom line: Do you like this card? How comfortable are you with yourself?

How does Card 7 (Sun Sign) relate to your Ruling Planet card, the driving energy of the layout? Note any conflicts and complements (compatibilities). Especially note conflicts and complements if you have chosen to use the Ruling Planet card for your Rising Sign (Ascendant), in position one. The Ruling Planet of your Rising Sign is the true driving energy of your birth chart overall.

Putting It All together:

Look at cards one, four and seven. Do you see relationships or conflicts between the driving energy of your layout (Ruling Planet card), your Sister Sign (Polarity card), and the essence of you (the Sun Sign card)?

How can you use cards two (Strengths), three (Challenges), five (Wishes), and six (The Next Step), to align yourself with the essence of your Sun Sign personality for its fullest expression?

It may help to make an entry in your tarot journal. You can also leave the cards out for a while, or program a dream, for more insight. Use your favorite three-card spread for more information on any card in the layout.

For added depth, read a description of your Ruling Planet, Polarity Sign and Sun Sign in an astrology book. The relationships of the specific tarot card meanings and their corresponding Signs and Planets are amazingly similar.

groups.msn.com/SolitaireA...rchart.msnw

you are comfortable with astrology...

Here's one really mysterious thing to do if you have a copy of your birth (natal) chart and know what planets and signs are in what houses:

Begin by using the chart below and the Minor Arcana information found at What's In Your House? And remember, the purpose of this is to expand your use of the tarot cards, not restrict it!

Next place the corresponding Major, Minor and Court cards exactly as they appear in your actual birth chart. For instance, if you are a Libra Sun in the 12th House, but Venus, the natural ruler of Libra, is in Virgo in the 11th House, you would draw the following cards:

Libra: JUSTICE and the KING OF SWORDS
Ruling Planet Venus: THE EMPRESS
The Houses of Endings (12th House Minors): All the Cups, Water
Virgo: THE HERMIT and the KNIGHT OF PENTACLES
The Houses of Relationships (11th House Minors): All the Swords, Air

Then look at Justice, the King of Swords (Libra cards, Air) and the 12 House Minors of Cups (Water) and decide how they complement or conflict with one another. Is there ease of energy or challenge? In this example, the obvious comparison is how Air (Libra) gets along with 12th House water, and how that stage of the journey might go.

Do the same with The Hermit, the Knight of Pentacles (Virgo cards, Earth) and the 11th House Minors of Swords, Air. How does Earth (Virgo) get along with Air, the 11th House? How would all of these cards "talk" to each other if they were in the same room?

To really get confused, throw in the polarity cards for Libra (Aries, The Emperor and the King of Wands, Fire), and decide what you need for a more balanced outlook. What does the polarity of fire (Aries) do to airy Libra?

To me, the combination work verifies that we humans are indeed complex, mysterious creatures. The whole truly is greater than the sum of its parts. Once you get the hang of it, working with tarot and astrology together is amazing. The possibilities of combination are endless, so get creative, and above all, enjoy the journey.

Hi, Everyone!

I use the Rider-Waite deck. Every morning I draw a guidance card for the day, and occasionally I'll do a spread if I have a question or concern. For the longest time (years actually), I could clearly see the relevance of the guidance card and/or spread to the situation at hand 9 times out of 10. Often, the cards were uncannily right on target, especially in hindsight. However, the past couple of weeks, I can see no relevance to what the situation is; to what actually happens. For example, yesterday I drew the 3 of Pentacles, but my day involved solo work and required no special planning or competence on my part, it was a laid back, low-key day regarding work. But other things happened that I would expect a guidance card to address (e.g., my mom had a major surgery and I was worried about her [she' made it through and is doing fine this morning]; I went to an observatory with my hubby and marveled at Mars; friends threw me a surprise birthday party 2 weeks late--I see all of these as important and none of these seem to relate to the 3 of Pentacles at all).

So, I would think that I have lost touch or am going through a slump. Yet, there are lots of indications that things are not random. For example, the Queen of Pentacles, the Empress, or the Magician always end up on the bottom of the deck, every day, no matter how I shuffle. Especially the Queen. In addition, she often falls out of the deck while I am shuffling.

In my 3.5 years on that line I saw literally hundreds of people attempt to become readers, turnover was higher there than anywhere I've ever seen or worked. There was an incredibly high number of people who just couldn't get it and many of the ones that did couldn't tolerate the environment. Management was greedy and deranged, played games and where usually late with the pay paychecks, office politics were beyond insane. The readers had tremendous ego's and competition for everything was fierce.

There are currently two options available. One is to contact the reader one-on-one via live chat with full interaction in the chat format. The other is by email in which the querent sends an email with the question or issue and any details that might be relevant; the reader then does the reading at home and replies in by email; for this option, the querent must have an email address on the Kasamba site, which is available at no charge.

My own fees starting out have been set at $3.00/minute for live chat and $50.00 flat fee for an email consultation. These may change as I have a chance to decide the most effective pricing policy. They reflect the fees I was charging in my reading practice. I have decided that the online venue is the one to pursue as my most convenient option at present.

Hi all,

I'm new to this tribe, and new to Tarot as well. I picked up a Crowley Thoth deck a couple of years ago, which I used a handful of times and am only now getting around to actually studying. A previous poster had a similar issue, in that she picked the Crowley deck as her first deck because of it's beautiful artwork and vibrant colors. Two nights ago I drew from it an amazing spread, which I'm still reflecting upon.

My partner suggested I back up a bit and start with a more basic deck, as to be able to learn the symbolism more effectively and not infuse my main deck with confusing emotions/energy. Last night I used a Robin Wood deck for the first time in order to learn, but felt a bit disconnected from it energetically speaking. So my newbie question is: do folks out there have any suggestions about connecting to this new deck...or scrapping this idea and continuing on with Crowley...more general thoughts on energy and decks...thoughts about starting out...you get the drift.

Many thanks, and enjoy the New Year...

We had an orphan's Christmas party (singles with no family gatherings to attend) and a friend did a reading asking if she should invite this guy from work who is still a very new acquaintance. All sunny happy cards kept coming up saying, yeah, great, go for it, then would end with a card she interprets as disease. Got very similar readings twice. When I asked for clarification the cards said, it's good to invite him but he won't come. So she invited him and we were a bit surprised when he happily accepted. Oh, OK. Well, cool. As the hostess I planned proper amt of food, a little gift for him to open up with the rest of us, etc. He was excited to be invited as he was, trul
