Coqui frog questions

Hi-

Puerto Rico is so beautiful in many ways; I've enjoyed all the visits I have been fortunate to make there. The nocturnal singing of Puerto Rico's coqui frogs has always seemed very melodious and pleasant to me.

During visits on the Big Island of Hawaii I have discovered a controversy regarding coquis. Apparently some coquis arrived from Puerto Rico awhile back and have spread into a substantial population in Hawaii. While I enjoy the singing of coquis, this feeling is not universal. Of more concern, as the population levels of coqui increase to vast numbers the biologists and ecologists are saying the froggies can cause a cascade of consequences resulting in the extinction of many Hawaiian native species (insects, birds, plants dependent upon certain bird or insect pollinators or seed dispersers, and so on).

I am wondering what factors keep the coqui population held in balance, preventing it from increasing without restraints in its natural habitat of Puerto Rico? Are there animals which consume coqui there in Puerto Rico? Chickens and some cats appear to eat coqui on Hawaii, but that is about all I have heard of eating them. Are there fungal, bacterial, or viral diseases which check the coqui population if it becomes too dense (allowing wildfire spread)?

Your comments and observations would be welcomed!

Room and board at B&B in PR

in exchange for some help. I have a small, fun B&B on the East coast of PR and I am looking for someone to cook breakfast, make beds and do laundry for about a month starting Jan 30. My business partner needs to return to California to take care of a sick relative and I need to keep the business open. If you are a couple or individual who would lke some warm weather, own room, swimming pool, great atmosphere with ocean view of the Caribbean in a small fishing village -- please respond. Oh, there is a small black lab puppy named "Marley" (yes, after Bob) who also lives here. Please email so we can talk more if you are interested.

Gracias, Boricua

ps. take a look www. casalibrepr.com - serious fok only please!

If You Could Only Have One Book On Yoga

If one could only have one book on yoga, the new book, Classical Hatha Yoga by Swami Rajarshi Muni would likely be it. This is the only book on yoga the practitioner or teacher would ever need. It is probably the most comprehensive book ever written on the subject of yoga and it is written by a most highly advanced Yogi and is based upon his own intensely deep personal practice . Check it out on Amazon's Inside the Book Program, where you can actually see its contents as well as its summary. It can also be purchased at the Kripalu Book Store.

Hi there!
I'm planning a trip to Puerto Rico with my girlfriends in the fall and am lost on where to stay. I use vrbo (vacation rentals by owners) but I don't know what part of the island we want to be located at. We will have a rental car and want to be in a smaller beach town. I'm not looking for a place with tons of nightlife, but a handfull of decent bars/ restaurants would be good. Our primary draw is the beach, however. Any advice would be appreciated!

Hello, my fella and I are planning a month long vacation to puerto rico and are concidering this beautiful island. I would love some feedback on what the cheap costs of living are, (ie camping, bungalos...you know) also what it is like. we are looking for a secluded beautiful mellow place.

Was wondering if anyone had any P.R. recipes, they would like to share.
My father’s side of my family is Puerto Rican, but I never learned how to cook any of the food. I even bought a cookbook when I was there, but I ended up giving my book to my Dads new wife, so she could cook for him.

For those looking for Puerto Rican food there is El Sol in San Rafael and there is Frutilandia in SF. Frutilandia is a mix of Puerto Rican and Cuban food. I've been to Frutilandia and have not made it to el Sol. It's pretty good. There are also activities held by numerous Puerto Rican groups in the bay area and they sell PR food at those activities mainly as part of their fund raisers.

Gov.'s Candid Moments Caught on Audiotape
Schwarzenegger's banter with aides offers glimpse of bull session behind closed doors.
By Robert Salladay, Times Staff Writer
September 8, 2006

SACRAMENTO — In the sanctuary of his Capitol office with an audio recorder rolling, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger describes Republican legislators as the "wild bunch" and, referring to a Latina lawmaker, casually says that "black blood" mixed with "Latino blood" equals "hot" — a fiery personality.
The governor is heard on a six-minute recording, obtained by The Times, of a meeting with some members of his inner circle last spring. At the time, Schwarzenegger was struggling to persuade Republican lawmakers to embrace his plan to place billions of dollars in borrowing on the November ballot.
It's unclear why the session was taped, but Schwarzenegger occasionally records private meetings so that speechwriters, in particular, can keep a record of his thoughts and cadence. This audio recording mainly consists of relaxed banter among Schwarzenegger and a few aides, and it offers an unusually candid look at his administration when the doors are closed.
On the recording, Schwarzenegger's Democratic chief of staff, Susan Kennedy, says Assembly Republican leader George Plescia of San Diego resembles a startled deer. That draws a chuckle from the Republican governor, who a moment earlier had referred to Plescia's predecessor, Assemblyman Kevin McCarthy, as "Bakersfield boy."
But Kennedy offers praise for Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia, the lone Latina Republican in the Legislature. The governor and Kennedy debate her ethnicity, and Schwarzenegger opines that whether she is Cuban or Puerto Rican doesn't matter much.

"I mean, they are all very hot," the governor says. "They have the, you know, part of the black blood in them and part of the Latino blood in them that together makes it."
He goes on to recall a former weightlifter and competitor, Cuban-born Sergio Oliva. "He was like that," Schwarzenegger says.
Garcia and McCarthy called the conversation irrelevant, even funny, when contacted by The Times on Thursday. Plescia had no comment.
Garcia said the conversation didn't bother her in the least. She called herself an "unpolished politician" and said Schwarzenegger had shown nothing but respect for her.
"I love the governor because he is a straight talker just like I am," Garcia said. "Very often I tell him, 'Look, I am a hot-blooded Latina.' I label myself a hot-blooded Latina that is very passionate about the issues, and this is kind of an inside joke that I have with the governor."
Margita Thompson, a spokeswoman for Schwarzenegger, issued this statement: "This is a small part of a long conversation that is taken totally out of context. The governor respects every member of the Legislature and holds them in the highest regard. It is not uncommon for him to have fun and joke with the members while they're working, especially during very tense negotiations."
The meeting probably took place in the Ronald Reagan Cabinet Room, the governor's de facto office that adjoins his smaller official quarters. The conference room faces east toward lush Capitol Park and has a long conference table that serves as a giant desk. The sword from Schwarzenegger's movie "Conan the Barbarian" rests on a nearby table.
Participants were Kennedy, who was Cabinet secretary under former Gov. Gray Davis; Gary Delsohn, a former Sacramento Bee reporter and author who recently became Schwarzenegger's chief speechwriter; and Walter Von Huene, a former TV director who is a close friend of the governor. Von Huene, a fellow cigar smoker and chess partner of Schwarzenegger, also serves as an informal speech coach.

Schwarzenegger's voice is heard first on the recording. He teases Delsohn and lavishly praises Kennedy as the conversation begins, suggesting that he knows the recording device is on. He calls Kennedy a "major, major champion."

"Got that on tape?" Kennedy says.
"It's on tape," Delsohn answers.
The free-flowing conversation took place amid negotiations over the governor's proposals for a giant public works package. At the time, Schwarzenegger's own party was resisting the sheer size of the plan — the largest in state history — which entailed tens of billions of dollars in borrowing. They eventually settled on a package worth $37 billion, placed on the November ballot.
On the recording, Kennedy and Schwarzenegger review an exchange between Kennedy and McCarthy, the Central Valley lawmaker who was then the lead negotiator for the Assembly's Republicans.
"You really pissed him off," Schwarzenegger said. "But you know something? You pissed him off because it hit home. That's why it pissed him off. People always get irritated; always when you hit something that is the truth, that's when people flame out."
Schwarzenegger says he had to control himself, and tried to be "really gentle" in the day's negotiations with his fellow Republicans. He calls it "dancing the dance."
But he says to Kennedy: "Anyway, so you hit him, you hit Bakersfield boy hard today," referring to McCarthy, who had warned against upsetting the Legislature's minority Republicans.
The governor goes on to describe the negotiating session:
"And then all of a sudden she comes in out of nowhere. She says, 'Yeah, but you are f------ the governor. Everything that means something to us, you're not including."
Kennedy replies: "I couldn't help it. I could not stay quiet."
Schwarzenegger: "I stayed quiet."
Kennedy then says that McCarthy, who is leaving the Assembly this year, ignored the governor's specific requests on transportation funding.
"He doesn't care. There's no price," Kennedy says. "Anyway, don't get me started again. I am glad he's running for Congress."
McCarthy, who in June won the GOP primary for the 22nd Congressional District, said Thursday that the conversation was typical of the honest back-and-forth that was occurring at the time.
"I thought it was funny," McCarthy said when told of the exchange about him between Schwarzenegger and Kennedy. "What is on that tape is no different than what we said to one another" during private negotiations, he said.
On the recording, someone then asks about Plescia, who had been elected Assembly Republican leader but ceded negotiations on the infrastructure bonds to McCarthy. Kennedy dismisses him.
"Plescia looks like the deer that keeps getting caught in my yard when I leave the gate open," said Kennedy, who owns a home in Marin County.
Kennedy then apparently makes a face, and the governor laughs.
"Great look. I love it," Schwarzenegger says. "There was the Academy Award right there."
Kennedy says Plescia has "big eyes that just kinda like stare like a Stepford wife. He's a good-looking guy. Happy. Perky."
Schwarzenegger then turns to analyzing whether Plescia can "control that wild bunch upstairs" — the Assembly's Republicans — "because that is like a very, uh, unique, uh, unruly bunch of guys and girls."
They move on to Garcia, a Cathedral City lawmaker who is the daughter of Puerto Rican immigrants. On her website, Garcia is described as "born on the Lower East Side of New York to teen parents."
"Bonnie Garcia is great," Kennedy says on the recording. "She's a ball-buster. She's great. Is she Puerto Rican?"
"She seems to me like Cuban," Schwarzenegger says.
"She's not Mexican," Kennedy replies.
"No," the governor agrees.
"But she said something," Kennedy says, "and I thought, I thought she was Puerto Rican."
Then Schwarzenegger offers a theory.
"She maybe is Puerto Rican or the same thing as Cuban. I mean, they are all very hot. They have the, you know, part of the black blood in them and part of the Latino blood in them that together makes it."
Schwarzenegger then drifts off into a conversation about Oliva, who once was one of Schwarzenegger's great rivals.
As Schwarzenegger waxes nostalgic about Oliva, Kennedy abruptly says in the background: "I'm leaving."
Conversation trails off, and the recording ends.

cool buses available for cool travellers

I'm a travellin' fool, mostly to the third world. Lotsa time in Central America, the Caribbean, and SE Asia.
I also travel by my buses, I have 27 or them, so if you need a bus, parts, or just advice, just yell

I'm still new to this tribe thing, but I am a nice person, and have the best buses in the world. I use school buses to haul medical and material aid to some of poorest places in the world (Haiti, Chiapas Mexico, El Salvador, and Nicaragua) and buy and sell them, and bus parts to support the project. I take every penny i make and convert it directly back into school supplies, medical supplies, tools, generators, and whatever the folks ask for specifically, (no junk, no used clothing) and then drive it down in person (except Haiti, that's $6000 thru the Panama Canal. Ouch)

I sell buses to folks that are 100% functioning in every way when they leave my hands, and also give any body thirty days to return the bus if unsatisfied. Nobody ever has, but it's OK, I'll just sell it to somebody else. you will also get a lifetime of free advice before and after you get a bus from me, I'm avaiable 7 days a week within reason, and after having dismantled 14 buses, and owning about 60,I am pretty knowledgable about their inner workings. Also got lots of good used bus parts, at the best price anywhere in the US. Ii have no overhead, just my Mazda mini truck and some tools.

I have a website (below) so you can check out my work. have a good one

Puerto Rico in early May- recommendations?

Hi! I'm travelling with my boyfriend to Puerto Rico, for the first time, in early May of this year. We're planning on staying somewhere right on the beach (or close close close to the beach), and we also want to be able to make day trips to Old San Juan, and of course Culebra, and the rainforest as well.

I'm having sort of a dilemma. Part of me wants to stay on Culebra the entire time (we'll be there for 5-6 nights)...and then make day trips to the main island. The other part of me says that we'll quickly get bored with that, and want the freedom to explore other places and not have to worry about making the afternoon ferry.

Should we stay on the mainland? I'm leaning towards this. And if so, which towns would you suggest, and any specific places? We want smaller, B&B type places, mid-range hotels, rather than huge resorts. We want as near the ocean as possible, maybe even a bit off the beaten path, rather than Tourist Central. We plan on spending a lot of time hanging out on beaches, relaxing, wandering around and taking in the sights, rather than any hardcore hiking/adventure travel.

Help! So many options!

Hello locals :)

I will be visiting San Juan for the first time in late June. Any suggestions on where to stay that is reasonable and not too far from the water? Where's the party at? The best resturants that aren't too touristy. And most important what locations I really want to explore...I've been on excursions packages before and they are often cheesy. If I know where to go I can catch a taxi there...I hope.
Fill me in on all the good stuff :)

¡Gracias y tienen un fin de semana hermoso!

hey, groovy people,

i am moving to puerto rico from vancouver this summer. needless to say, vancouver has totally spoiled me as regards the herb. i pray that kynd buds will be available, but if not, i am totally prepared to learn to drink! ;) anyway, once in puerto rico i would like to obtain a job of some sort, but not an office job or anything boring. does anyone know if it's possible to "work" on the beach, preferably in a bikini? what might my options be as far as getting a job that allows me to enjoy the sunshine? i'm totally allowed to work there legally, by the way.

also, my knowledge of the island and culture and communities leaves much to be desired; does anyone know of any laid-back hippie-like or rasta communities? is it generally easy to score herb there, and what are the pot laws and cops like there?

any information, suggestions, recommendations, yada yada yada you want to share will be very greatly appreciated! thanks in advance, and peace be with you all!
Going to Puerto Rico in January

I'm heading back to Puerto Rico in January for a couple of weeks. My father is from there (I was born in the U.S.). I should be spending half the time catching up with family, the other half hanging out on beaches. I'm thinking about Mountain Biking in El Yunque, or maybe even on Vieques (which apparently is becoming the hot new tourist area -- anyone see the spread in Outside magazine this month??)

Viva Borinquen!

Puerto Ricans are happiest people in the world, study finds

BY MATTHEW HAY BROWN

The Orlando Sentinel

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - (KRT) - Island of Enchantment, indeed: This U.S. territory of sandy beaches and lush rain forest, close-knit families and endless celebrations is home to the happiest people in the world, according to a new study.

Never mind the low income or the high murder rate, the double-digit unemployment or the troubled public schools. Puerto Ricans say emphasis on extended family, an easy warmth among even strangers and a readiness to celebrate anything, anywhere, at any time, all contribute to a high quality of life here.

"There are over 500 festivals in Puerto Rico, and there are only 365 days in a year," says Francisco Cavo, a U.S. Army medic at Fort Buchanan, near San Juan. "That's a lot of fun on the schedule."

The United States ranked 15th among the 82 societies in the study by the Stockholm, Sweden-based World Values Survey, which was based on interviews with 120,000 people representing 85 percent of the global population. That put the United States ahead of Britain, Germany and France, Japan, China and Russia, but behind Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela, Ireland, the Netherlands and Canada.

The subjective well-being rankings are one part of the largest social-science study ever. The World Values Survey, an ongoing investigation by a global network of social scientists, measures social, cultural and political change on all six populated continents.

Among its findings: As societies grow wealthier, they shift priorities from maximizing income to maximizing well-being.

That means individuals become likelier to choose jobs based on how interesting the work is, not simply how much it pays, said University of Michigan political scientist Ronald Inglehart, chairman of the survey. Communities, meanwhile, grow more likely to seek ways to protect the environment, even if the measures they choose may slow economic expansion.

Another key finding: As they grow wealthier, societies become more tolerant of differences among members - and they become more insistent on personal freedom.

"From a political scientist's viewpoint, one of the most important consequences is that demands for self-expression rise to the point where democracy becomes increasingly probable, and even hard to avoid," said Inglehart, program director of the Center for Political Study at Michigan's Institute for Social Research.

The rankings are based on responses to questions about happiness and life satisfaction. Generally, the wealthiest nations tend to be the happiest. But Latin American societies, particularly those around the Caribbean - Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic - prove an exception. Inglehart calls it "the Latino bonus."

"They're not the richest people in the world," Inglehart said. "You seem to get a plus for being Latino."

He says determining the reasons requires more study. But in Puerto Rico, at least, Enrique Rodriguez said he already knows.

"We are a small island, and people are nice to each other," said Rodriguez, a retired government worker who lives in Old San Juan. "Everybody gets along. When we pass in the street, we say hello to each other.

"We have our problems like everyone, but they're nothing like in Cuba or the Middle East. Even those without jobs have something to eat."

Cavo, 22, a married father of two, stresses the importance of family.

"We value friends and family a lot," he said. "I don't know other countries. But the meaning of what a family is seems to be a little bit different here. It's not just your wife and kids. It's your mom and dad, uncles, aunts, all the cousins, everybody who's got your last name."

At the other end of the rankings, the former Soviet republics - Ukraine, Russia and Georgia among them - and the formerly communist nations of Eastern Europe, such as Romania, Bulgaria and Albania, are disproportionately unhappy.

"That is not surprising," Inglehart said. "It's not that they're the poorest in the world, but they are societies that have gone from being fairly well-off and fairly secure to being very disoriented - poor, and life expectancy has fallen, and their standard of living has fallen, and their position in the world has fallen."

Inglehart acknowledges the challenges of measuring happiness across widely varying cultures. He calls the possible impact on the rankings of interviewing different peoples in different languages, for example, "a major concern." But he says language alone doesn't explain the findings.

The Spanish-speaking societies of Puerto Rico, Mexico, Colombia, El Salvador and Venezuela for instance, all rated happier than most of Western Europe, while Spain itself trailed most of the region. Similarly, the French-, German- and Italian-speaking peoples of Switzerland all rated significantly happier than the peoples of France, Germany and Italy.

Culture also may color responses. In Japan, for example, which is noted for valuing conformity - one maxim holds that the nail that sticks out will get pounded down - respondents may be less likely to identify themselves as very happy or very unhappy, Inglehart said.

Consequently, despite its wealth, Japan ranks 42nd of the 82 societies, last among the industrialized nations.

Puerto Rico seems less reserved about proclaiming its happiness. The per-capita gross domestic product here is less than half that of the U.S. mainland, while the homicide rate is more than three times as high - factors that have helped to fuel the mass migration of islanders to the U.S. mainland.

Still, to locals, this land of endless summer is la Isla del Encanto - it's on the license plate.

"The Latin temperament is to be very optimistic in many ways," said Lily Garcia, a radio and television-show host, newspaper columnist and motivational speaker here. "You give Latin Americans open space and music and a drink in our hands, and we're happy.

"We just kind of make the best out of it, out of everything. It's like this laissez-faire attitude. People are like, `Yeah, whatever.' That's an important part of being happy."

Hi there, name's Cristina, I'm a Romanian immigrant living in the US. I've been here 7 years. Identity struggles? Yes. Confusion and missunderstandings? Yes. Trouble adjusting sometimes? Yes. But things can be talked out, talked through and talked over. I need your stories. Stories heal. And change lives. Go to www.sentimentalrefugee.com and send me yours.

I also need superstitions, folklore and myths from your culture. That's the ground zero of our humanity. Every culture has dragons. Every culture wards off the "bad spirits". But not in the same way. www.cafepress.com/superstitions has a few, but we need more. Send us ideas and traditions from your culture. If we use them (as in draw pictures, create products based on your thoughts) we'll give you 10% of the profits for each product that was created based on your idea. If you send us a cool graphic that we use, we'll give you 20%. Check it out.
