NEW YORK -- The 1980s will never die -- at least not on Broadway.
"Xanadu," based on the campy 1980 film about a Greek muse who helps a young man build a disco roller rink, is coming to the stage. Songs are by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, who provided tunes for the movie. The book is by Douglas Carter Beane, author of "The Little Dog Laughed," a comedy currently playing at Broadway's Cort Theatre.
No casting for "Xanadu" was announced, but a workshop production earlier this year featured Jane Krakowski and Cheyenne Jackson. The film starred Olivia Newton-John as that helpful Greek muse, Michael Beck and movie-musical legend Gene Kelly.

Re: Xanadu - The Musical
Wed, May 23, 2007 - 8:55 PMOh my Zeus --- IT WAS AWESOME
I was expecting to be disappointed but Xanadu On Broadway was so good I almost plotzed. They really nailed it with this one, and I hope it becomes a huge hit. They did all the songs from the movie plus two or three other ones, and they had some really good lines in there. There was a lot of self-deprecating humor about what it was (a broadway musical based on a cheesy '80s movie), and there was one line in the middle that I'm STILL giggling over (I won't spoil it in case anyone reading this sees the show).
In addition to t-shirts they also had purple legwarmers with the Xanadu logo. I will be rocking them as soon as the opportunity arises....
I totally recommend seeing it if you have the chance. I'll be interested to see what the "professional" "critics" think of it.
