"Hollywood Flop May Become Broadway Smash

Broadway has apparently turned Hollywood on its head by turning the 1980 musical flop Xanadu into a stage hit. By and large, the show, which opened Tuesday night, has received enthusiastic reviews. Calling it an "outlandishly enjoyable stage spoof," New York Times stage critic Charles Isherwood writes that it is "simultaneously indefensible and irresistible." Isherwood concludes: "The show's winking attitude toward its own aesthetic abjectness can be summed up thus: If you can't beat 'em, slap on some roller skates and join 'em." Linda Winer in Newsday calls the show "a grand little piece of smart dumb fun." And Joe Dzienmianowicz, in the New York Daily News calls it "eye and ear candy that's delightfully inspiring ... a cure for summertime blues." But Clive Barnes in the New York Post isn't buying any of that. Noting that the original movie was credited with killing off the large-scale Hollywood musical for more than two decades, Barnes suggests that the only thing "not awful" about the Broadway show is the music. "That, I suppose, is the only goodish news of an absolutely ghastly show" in which the performers all have "to keep their tongues in their cheeks for so long it must give them earaches," he remarks. "
Funny thing is, I was just coming to this tribe to read the latest posts, at the same time I came across this article via IMDb. (Yeah, I "multitask", keeping several windows going and running back and forth reading them all. ;-P ) Anyway, I felt that was a sign for me to post the info. here. :D

NEW YORK -- The 1980s will never die -- at least not on Broadway.

"Xanadu," based on the campy 1980 film about a Greek muse who helps a young man build a disco roller rink, is coming to the stage. Songs are by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, who provided tunes for the movie. The book is by Douglas Carter Beane, author of "The Little Dog Laughed," a comedy currently playing at Broadway's Cort Theatre.

No casting for "Xanadu" was announced, but a workshop production earlier this year featured Jane Krakowski and Cheyenne Jackson. The film starred Olivia Newton-John as that helpful Greek muse, Michael Beck and movie-musical legend Gene Kelly.

It's the last listing, so scroll down to the bottom for January 27. It will be the first time I have seen Xanadu in a movie theater since seeing it at the cineplex when it originally came out (I saw it with my grandma and she totally hated it).

Since there are no roller rinks in SF, I move we all dress up in roller disco outfits and wear skates to the theater. I highly recommend RollerBoogie, the first film of the three, it's also one of my favorite movies. I was shocked when they released it on DVD. It features Linda Blair delivering some really bad dialogue and also the Cher song "Hell On Wheels". I have never seen Skatetown USA, so I'm looking forward to that one as well. But it's all about the Xanadu....
