Favorite Place

In espresso spots, I sometimes have to choose between the best coffee or the friendliest people. Is it true that the two do not go together?
Right now I dream of the Illy shop. I can go there tomorrow. They do not condone loitering, and they have the best substance in my book. There, I got an espresso con panna artfully apportioned. I'm a bit sad now; I won't have an espresso 'til tomorrow.

It's real easy to skip the best brews if you're also looking for atmosphere and the place with the best coffee is uninterested in having people sitting to chat and sip coffee, if the decor, the music or the people are unpleasant.. etc.

As a grad student, I find the places with the best coffee don't always have the best table space or welcoming atmosphere for my & my books. Therefore, I will sometimes go someplace with not-as-good coffee, but a better place to hang out & read for a couple of hours.

Coffee is about more than simply the taste. It's a whole aesthetic environment.

I'm sorry. Did my personal preferences for coffee consumption offend you? Or does the fact that I live in a beach town with palm trees where "cold" is 62 degrees offend you?

FUCK snotty coffee snobs who make great coffee but can't give polite or even decent customer service or a decent place to sit. FUCK coffee places that have tiny tables and an unwelcoming atmosphere. I'd like to have the option to sit for awhile and read or chat with a friend. Yes, I'll take less than perfect coffee in a place that is more comfortable and pleasant to sit in over perfect coffee and tiny tables with uncomfortable chairs almost any day. Part of the coffee experience, in my (yes) West Coast opinion, is the right atmosphere in which to enjoy my coffee.

To go coffee is a totally different question. Then it's the best coffee and I'll make my own aesthetics.

            Ms Em,
I agree with you almost 100%. When I'm out and looking for a coffee shop, I'm looking to also relax, so like a shop that has that laid back, comfortable, not rushed atmosphere in which to relax. The coffee however is also important to me, as I have been in several small but comfy shops where the coffee tasted like burnt tires, and have been in one privately owned shop which is quite large with excellent coffee, but also very loud, as the shop also includes a gaming shop (board games, card games, etc). The shop is loud when there are gaming "tournaments" going on. Unfortunately here in my area, the private shops are being run under by that giant octopus called Starbucks, which seems to have it's tentacles everywhere (tis another story). Give me good or excellent coffee in a comfy, not rushed atmosphere anytime. If I want great, outstanding coffee all the time, I simply grind and brew my own at home and relax......
And btw, a beach town with 62 degrees sounds better than Denver right now with 5 inches of snow and 10 degrees....:)
